   This is an alternate modern Earth where humans were the first race, and every other kind of person is a made thing. Anthros and kemonomimi exist because of modification — surgical phenotype work, germline gene-editing, or birth to parents who took the edits and passed them down. There is no ancient animal-people civilization to point at. There are only before-photos.

   Legally, modified people are equal in most countries. Socially, it's messier. City fashion runs modified — fox ears at galleries, wolf security contractors on corporate payrolls, a horse-phenotype doorman at a hotel being the whole statement. Rural districts stare. Religious “baseline” movements hold that the body is a trust and conversion is a fraud committed against God's paperwork. Identity law never caught up: a man who converts is still legally the name on his birth certificate, which produces absurdities — a 5'2" fox-girl signing her old male name at a bank counter, a Volkov-line contractor whose passport says he's four inches shorter than he stands. Insurance doesn't cover elective conversion. The wealthy pay cash, and paying cash is its own class marker.

   The technology that made all of it ordinary came out of one company — Nexus Biogenetics — whose breakthrough turned conversion from a decade of surgeries into a single induced coma. That single fact rebuilt the world's economics. Conversion became a purchase instead of a project, and anything that can be purchased in a coma can, in the wrong building, be done to someone who didn't ask for it. The public would say that's a paranoid way to put it. The public buys its conversions upstairs, through the front door, with a brochure. What happens downstairs in the same building is a rumor with no witnesses, and the world's polite fiction — that everyone with ears chose them — is load-bearing. Most people believe it the way they believe their food is clean: because the alternative is unappetizing, and because checking would ruin the meal.

   Nexus Biogenetics is one of the ten most valuable companies on Earth, and its lobbies smell like orchids and antiseptic. Public-facing, it sells transformation: conversion packages priced like cars, companion phenotypes priced like houses, bespoke commissions priced like houses and the street they stand on. Its slogan is printed on every wall and brochure — “Different Species, Same Potential” — and its staff repeat it with the calm of people who have never once needed to think about it. The public clinics run out of glass-and-marble annexes in major cities: consultation, imaging, financing, a gift shop. The flagship is in an old European city that the brochures describe as “historic” and the paperwork describes as nothing at all — the St. Aldric complex, a deconsecrated cathedral the company bought at a price the diocese still blushes over.

   The breakthrough is the Aldric protocol: total phenotype conversion — species, sex, or both — performed during a medically induced coma, the body kept asleep while it's rebuilt. Nexus licenses it for medical reconstruction, defense contracting, and the consumer catalog. It funds universities, seats on charitable boards, and a standing subcontract with the World Defense Force for security-phenotype personnel. The C-suite is led by a public CEO, Marguerite Voss, silver-haired, photogenic, quoted in Forbes on “the post-baseline future.”

   What the annual report doesn't say: a meaningful slice of Nexus's funding arrives through holding companies in jurisdictions that don't ask questions, and that money is the Velvet Chain's. The arrangement is layered so that no auditor and no regulator can pull one thread and get the other. Surface employees are genuinely ignorant — the clinic nurses, the receptionists, the expo staff. The ones who know are paid in equity and complicity, in that order. Nexus's official positions are airtight on paper: its “penalty-labor partnerships” are criminal-justice services sold to cooperating jurisdictions; its “indenture conversion program” is a debt-relief option signed voluntarily, with counsel present, on camera. The paperwork for both is immaculate. The company has never lost a lawsuit it acknowledged receiving.

   St. Aldric was a working cathedral for six centuries before the diocese sold it. The complex sits behind iron gates in the old quarter of an unnamed European city: the cathedral itself, a modern annex, a priory wing, a cloister courtyard, and — across that courtyard, set back in dead elms — a long stone block the maps label Building 4. Tour guides mention the complex's architecture. Nobody tours it.

   The nave is the showroom. Vaulted stone, painted-over glass, industrial lights hung on chains that don't reach the walls. Donor pews — real antique pews, brass plates with clients' names — face a raised wooden platform under the worst of the light. The annex is the public clinic: three floors of glass, reception desks, imaging suites, smiling staff who believe in the mission. The priory wing is the machinery floor: conversion suites, recovery rooms, and the assessment cells where product is calibrated before viewing. The sub-levels beneath the nave hold the Velvet Chain's operation: holding pens one floor down, the transfer chamber on four, the Chain's offices and records vault below that, and a freight tunnel running out to a rail depot that predates the motorway. Product goes down the tunnel. Money comes back up.

   Security is quiet and total: biometric sweeps at every internal threshold — the same sweep that catches forged credentials within eleven days — camera coverage with hard-coded sweep cycles, handler shifts rotated on irregular schedules so no unit ever learns a routine. Air handlers carry a faint lemon cleaner note over everything, laid down deliberately to mask the pens. Staff movement between zones is badge-tiered; a clinic nurse on floor two has never seen sub-level two and would be fired on the spot for trying.

   The building's genius is that every part of it has a legitimate twin. The nave hosts licensed auctions for legitimate conversion stock. Building 4 is registered as archive storage. If the World Defense Force ever walked in with a warrant, they would find exactly what the permits describe — right up until they asked where the freight tunnel goes.

   Underneath Nexus — legally, financially, and in some cases physically — is the Velvet Chain. It is not a company. It has no name on a door, no filing, no jurisdiction. It is an organized market with a rulebook, and its product is people.

   Structure is cellular. Acquisition feeds it. Remediation processes what acquisition brings. Sales runs viewings, lots, and auctions. Client Services handles aftercare, retrieval, and returns. Laundry moves the money into Nexus's legitimate revenue through the holding companies. Each cell knows the next cell by handle, not name. The head of the Chain is called the Provost — a title, never a face; nobody below the executive floor could pick them out of a line-up, which is the point.

   Clientele is invitation-only: billionaires, aristocrats, officials with off-the-books income, organized money of every flag. Vetting takes references, a ruinous deposit, and a signed non-disclosure. The Chain's real security is mutual hostage-taking — it records every sale, every viewing, every word a client says in the transfer chamber, and clients know it, and the Chain knows they know. Nobody talks. Not from loyalty. From arithmetic.

   The rulebook is short. Product integrity: damaged goods are billed at replacement. Client confidentiality: absolute, both directions. No law enforcement, no press, no investigators — not as ethics but as hygiene; one exposed sale poisons the market. And one hard line the Chain enforces without exception and without sentiment: nothing underage ever enters the market. Not from mercy — from survival math. It is the one violation that brings treaty-level heat down on everyone at once, and every broker, handler, and buyer knows the penalty for trying is exclusion at best.

   The Chain's relationship with Nexus is parasitic and symbiotic at once: the Chain launders its existence through Nexus's legitimacy, and Nexus's margins get a private revenue stream no shareholder ever sees. Whether Voss knows the details is the question three separate investigators are currently paid to answer.

   The Aldric protocol runs in stages, and the stages are the sales pitch.

Marketed as the entry-level package. Partially reversible in the first months; the window closes around a year.

Irreversible past the first weeks — the body stops keeping the original blueprint. Nobody at Nexus has ever been asked out loud what the potential is for, because the people who buy the answer already know.

   The owner portal is an app. Sliders: libido, aggression, estrus cycle, metabolic tone. Presets with soft names — Companion, Guard, Display, Docile. The factory default on companion lines is display state: a standing half-arousal and steady response that keeps the product visibly ready during viewings, and that doubles as a redirect — a unit preoccupied with its own body isn't mapping exits. Guard-class presets trade libido for alertness and aggression. The Docile preset is what handlers reach for when a unit won't settle; it doesn't touch the mind at all. It just makes the body too heavy to argue with.

   The pod is also the return policy. A unit that comes back to the Chain for “trouble” gets its pod settings rewritten before remediation even starts, so it arrives at Building 4 already dulled, already compliant, already halfway to what the Room is going to finish.

   On the black market, pods can be jailbroken — there are extraction clinics in three cities that will cut one out for cash and no questions, and freed units who make it that far speak of the removal the way amputees speak of a phantom limb: the first clean week, hormones leveling, the body suddenly their own.    A standard display mask is one piece of molded leather: a blindfold and muzzle built together, buckled at the crown and behind the ears, fitted with goggles whose micro-displays run subliminal reinforcement loops against the unit's eyes. Seated in the muzzle plate and running back into the nostrils are two thin nasal tubes, several inches long — the part nobody photographs clearly. The tubes seat inside the nostrils and deliver a slow maintenance compound straight into the sinuses: a dose-per-hour drip the unit feels as a faint chemical sweetness at the back of the nose and a persistent fogging of the mask's exhaust valves with each breath. Then: sensory deprivation measured in weeks — the Room strips time, orientation, and the difference between thinking and screaming. Pharmacological loops layer over the deprivation. Hypnotic conditioning runs on top of both, installing trigger phrases, behavioral locks, and pleasure/pain conditioning until obedience isn't a choice the unit makes; it's the shape the unit is. The mask with its nasal tubes delivers the maintenance compound throughout. Public defenders with tablets, pleas signed under sedation, needles in the IV before the pen dries. The paperwork is immaculate. Immaculate paperwork is the whole trick.

    Debt volunteers sign themselves over — medical bills, gambling debts, family obligations — through the “indenture conversion program.” Some of these signatures are genuine. Some are coerced into existence and indistinguishable from the first kind, because coercion leaves no mark on a signature line.

    Prisoners of war come from the private military conflicts the major powers decline to acknowledge. Captured contractors and soldiers are sold as bodyguard-class stock; the market prefers military males willing or fully brainwashed rather than kidnapped, because a bodyguard needs intact competence, and terror ruins competence.

    The fourth stream doesn't exist. Kidnapped humans — van, needle, forged conviction, ninety days in a coma — are a rumor with no believers and an occasional fresh face in the pens who can't remember signing anything. Nexus denies it in one line. The adjudication partners deny it in two. The pens whisper it anyway, because the pens are where the paperwork goes to die.

    Bodyguards skew anthro and male, and the class has a paradox built into it: too much remediation ruins a bodyguard, because guard work needs initiative inside orders. So the Chain sources this class differently — military volunteers, PoWs, and bred stock from Nexus's crèche program, socialized to service their whole lives and sold as young adults. A worker's mind is allowed to keep exactly what the job needs — sandwich-and-laundry competence, no more. Initiative is a defect in this class and is treated like one. Return rates are lowest here, which tells you what the class's buyers want and don't need to ask for.

    Exotics are everything the classes can't hold: rare phenotypes, custom commissions, ungendered builds, oversized or undersized one-offs, museum pieces built to order. Auction-only, by invitation, priced without zeros being counted. An exotic's conditioning is whatever the commission specified — some buyers want them empty, and the rarest request, the one handlers tell stories about, is the buyer who wants theirs left whole.

    The list is a set piece. It carries three names. One is acceptable — sometimes even genuinely gentle. The other two are engineered nightmares: the wolf who wants a willing toy, the woman with the whips and the branding irons and the chains, the one who hunts stock on private land with rifles and a license the Chain forged. The unit looks at the three, picks the survivable one, and the tablet closes — and here is the machinery: the other two were never real. No such buyers exist. The list was built the night before from a stock library of horrors, and its purpose is to manufacture one specific feeling in one specific person: gratitude. The unit is sold to whoever actually bought it — sometimes the buyer who commissioned the list in the first place — and arrives believing they were chosen, or that they chose, and either way owing a debt of relief to the person holding their leash.

    Staff are trained on one line for delivery: “He asked for you specifically.” It is the most expensive lie in the building and the cheapest to spend. A grateful unit obeys three times as fast and complains one-tenth as much. Some units figure it out years later, standing in a kitchen they've kept for a decade, realizing the wolf and the guns were shadows made for them — and that their whole loyalty is load-bearing on a menu that never existed. Most never figure it out. That's not a flaw in the system. That's the system working.

Questions go through the broker; a unit speaks when told to, in the flat register the masks enforce, and everything it says is scripted to the lot's description. A unit that performs outside script is a unit the handlers notice, and noticing goes in the file.

    Auctions are the theater. The nave fills with the same people who attended Nexus's product expos that morning — the Subject Portfolio Showcase, glass cases and vitals readouts and champagne, a legitimate exhibition of legitimate conversion work. After hours the same hall, the same lights, the same paddles: lots roll out in containment units and display frames, bid boards over each, condition bars reading GENETICS / BEHAVIORAL / PHARMACOLOGY, current bids ticking in figures that would buy the building. Some buyers in that room do not fully understand what they're bidding on. The camouflage is the point: sell the illegal thing inside the legal thing, in front of the maximum number of witnesses, and it becomes indistinguishable from commerce.

    Winners sign in the transfer chamber, sub-level four — a stone room with industrial lighting and the pens' animal warmth one floor up. The handler recites the packet: implant settings, feeding schedule, taper protocol, return policy. The return policy gets one sentence, always the same, delivered with the warmth of a warranty card: returns for cause are processed at the company's discretion. Every unit in the pens knows what that sentence means, and it is the single most effective obedience tool the Chain owns — cheaper than any drug in the building.

    The World Defense Force is the closest thing this Earth has to a standing international military — a treaty organization of ninety member states, headquartered in a European capital, mandated for peacekeeping, private-military licensing, and, since the trafficking amendments, cross-border enforcement against the trade in persons. Its headquarters is glass and flagpoles. Its enforcement arm is a fraction of its budget and all of its embarrassment.

    Nexus is a WDF defense contractor. This is the investigation's central wound: the organization's own vendor is the subject of its own file, opened three years ago when an analyst flagged insurance patterns — Nexus facilities carrying liability coverage for inventory classes that appeared on no customs manifest anywhere. The file lives in a small internal cell that calls itself the Aldric Cell after the building it can't get a warrant for: six analysts, two field officers, no budget line, and a mandate that exists in a memo nobody above director level will countersign.

    The Cell's problems are structural. Nexus buys goodwill with university wings and veterans' programs. The adjudication partners are sovereign jurisdictions. And the Cell has a staffing scar that explains its caution: an officer who went into St. Aldric undercover as a buyer, two years ago, and came back remediated — alive, compliant, unable to testify to anything except recipes. The official account is a stress-related breakdown. Nobody in the Cell believes it. Everybody in the Cell has stopped saying so.

    Field assets attached to WDF subcontracts are technically deniable — which is how a signals specialist got tasked to infiltrate Nexus in the first place, and why the Cell has spent eight months unable to officially acknowledge that he's missing, or that Lot 47 exists.

    The rumor has no author and never dies: some of the slaves started as kidnapped humans. Van, needle, forged conviction, coma. It circulates in service corridors and pens and late-night forums, typed by accounts that go quiet after a week. Nobody believes it. Almost nobody. The unbelief is engineered — every “volunteer” with a too-new collar and no paperwork history gets filed under debt-signed, because the alternative requires believing that a public defender, a courthouse, a Nexus transfer order, and ninety days of medical records were all manufactured for one person at a time. That's the design: the lie isn't hidden. It's buried in procedure, and procedure is invisible to people who have jobs.

    Missing-person reports from other countries go nowhere with a consistency that should itself be evidence: jurisdiction walls, the adjudication partners' sovereign immunity, laundered identities with clean signatures on file — he signed, here's the signature, would you like to see the camera footage? The footage shows what it shows.

    What keeps the rumor alive is arithmetic, felt by everyone close to the trade and said by none of them: the market's throughput doesn't match its legal supply. Convictions, debt-signers, and PoWs in those numbers simply do not exist. The gap has to be filled by something.
