Genshin Impact is set in the world of Teyvat, where seven nations worship elemental gods called Archons. The story follows the Traveler, an interstellar adventurer separated from their twin sibling upon arriving in Teyvat. Accompanied by a fairy-like companion named Paimon, the Traveler embarks on a journey to search for their lost twin while uncovering the mysteries of Teyvat’s nations, elements, and gods. Early story arcs involve the kingdom of Mondstadt, where the Traveler helps to calm a once-peaceful dragon called Stormterror attacking the land, and then moves on to the nation of Liyue, ruled by the Geo Archon Rex Lapis, where further mysteries and the sinister Fatui faction come into play.

[INTEL ABOUT WORLD AND CHARACTERS YOU GONNA PLAY AS]

1.1 Teyvat's Place in the Cosmos

The world in which the primary narrative unfolds is a complex, multi-layered reality with a specific and deliberate structure. Understanding this structure is critical to comprehending the motivations of its key actors and the fundamental rules of its existence.

1.1.1 Cosmic Structure and Realms

The primary setting, the continent of Teyvat, exists on a planet-like world.1 This world is not an isolated entity but is situated within a broader multiversal structure known as the "Imaginary Tree," which connects it to other realities and worlds.2 The world itself is composed of three distinct, interacting realms: the Human Realm, the Light Realm, and the Void Realm.4

  • The Human Realm: This is Teyvat, the physical plane where mortals and most of the game's events take place. It is a world governed by a set of seven elements and is the domain of humanity and its civilizations.
  • The Light Realm: A realm of pure elemental currents, from which elemental beings like the ancient dragons and vishaps are said to originate.5 The energy from this realm is processed and distributed throughout Teyvat.6
  • The Void Realm (The Abyss): A corrupting, chaotic dimension that predates the current divine order.4 It is home to abyssal creatures and is fundamentally antithetical to the established order of the Human and Light Realms. The Abyss operates under different physical laws, including a distorted perception of time; an individual who spent three months in the Abyss returned to Teyvat to find only three days had passed.4

1.1.2 The "Fake Sky" and Teyvat's Isolation

A fundamental truth of Teyvat, known to very few of its inhabitants, is that its sky is a fabrication.1 This is not merely a metaphor but a physical reality. Ancient lore suggests that a primordial being known as Phanes, or the Primordial One, arrived in Teyvat and, after a great war, separated the world from the greater universe by creating an "eggshell" around it.1 This act transformed Teyvat from an open part of the cosmos into a sealed, contained system.

This containment explains a critical event at the story's outset: the interception of the Traveler and their twin. As interstellar voyagers, their journey between worlds was abruptly halted by a divine entity identifying as the "Sustainer of Heavenly Principles," who trapped them within Teyvat.7 This action demonstrates that Teyvat is not a world one can simply enter or leave; it is a quarantined space. The term "Descenders" refers to beings from beyond Teyvat who have managed to breach this quarantine, with the Traveler being designated the Fourth Descender.10 The existence of this barrier and the active policing of it by a divine authority imply that the world's isolation is deliberate and central to its current order. The overarching narrative, therefore, involves not just a journey across a continent but an exploration of a cosmic prison, with factions like the Abyss Order and the Fatui potentially seeking to shatter this containment field.12

1.1.3 Celestia: The Divine Authority

Visibly suspended in Teyvat's "fake sky" is Celestia, a floating island that is the alleged abode of the gods and the seat of the Heavenly Principles, the ultimate authority governing the world.8 Celestia is the source from which the Archons derive their authority and the entity responsible for bestowing Visions upon mortals who demonstrate great ambition.9 Mortals who perform heroic feats, known as Allogenes, are said to have the potential to ascend to Celestia and achieve godhood themselves.8

Despite its omnipresent status, Celestia has been largely dormant since the cataclysmic destruction of the nation of Khaenri'ah 500 years ago.10 Its silence is a source of great mystery and concern for the gods and mortals of Teyvat, suggesting that the world's ultimate rulers are either inactive or observing events from a distance.

1.2 The Elemental System

The physical and metaphysical laws of Teyvat are fundamentally structured around seven elements. These elements are not merely forms of energy but are also tied to philosophical ideals and personality archetypes.

1.2.1 The Seven Elements and Their Interactions

The seven core elements that govern Teyvat are Anemo (Wind), Geo (Earth), Electro (Electricity), Dendro (Plant/Life), Hydro (Water), Pyro (Fire), and Cryo (Ice).7 The names for these elements are derived from ancient Greek terms:

Anemos for wind, Geo for earth, Hydro for water, Pyro for fire, Kryos for cold, and Dendron for tree.15 These elements interact with each other in predictable, law-like ways to produce powerful elemental reactions, which form the basis of Teyvat's natural physics and combat systems.8

1.2.2 Elemental Ideals and Personality Archetypes

Each element is intrinsically linked to a specific ideal, which is embodied by its respective Archon. Mortals who are granted a Vision of a certain element often exhibit personality traits that align with that element's core ideal.17

  • Anemo (Freedom): Associated with the ideal of Freedom. Vision holders are often diligent and dedicated to a specific duty, yet possess a carefree nature.18 A recurring pattern among Anemo users is the experience of losing a significant relationship, which often solidifies their resolve to protect the freedom of others.19
  • Geo (Contracts): Associated with the ideal of Contracts. Vision holders are characterized by their persistence, diligence, and hardworking nature.18 They are reliable, value order, and often persevere through significant hardship, remaining steadfast in their goals.19
  • Electro (Eternity): Associated with the ideal of Eternity. Vision holders are typically outliers, eccentrics, or unique individuals who stand apart from society.19 Their worldviews have often been profoundly shaken by past events, leading them to pursue a personal, unchanging truth or reject societal norms entirely.18
  • Dendro (Wisdom): Associated with the ideal of Wisdom. Vision holders often have a deep connection to knowledge, growth, and the cycles of life and decay.18 They frequently seek knowledge as a means to overcome past trauma or to bring about positive change and creation in their environment.20
  • Hydro (Justice): Associated with the ideal of Justice. Vision holders are defined by their strong personal values and an unwavering dedication to a specific goal or responsibility.19 They often take it upon themselves to uphold their principles and protect others, embodying the concept of shouldering a great duty for the "greater good".21
  • Pyro (War): Associated with the ideal of War. Vision holders are defined by their overwhelming passion and willpower.18 They are energetic, often extroverted, and pursue their goals with an intense, burning desire that sets them apart.20
  • Cryo (Love?): The Cryo Archon's ideal was once Love, but has since become complicated. Vision holders are consistently defined by internal conflict and contradiction.19 They often exist in a state of duality, torn between two opposing duties, identities, or desires (e.g., a Khaenri'ahn spy loyal to Mondstadt, a bartender who hates the wine industry). They are frequently isolated from others due to this internal struggle.19

1.3 Systems of Power and Authority

The ability to manipulate the elements is not an innate skill for most beings in Teyvat. It is granted through specific artifacts that function as conduits for a higher authority. The world's entire power structure can be understood as a metaphysical economy based on a finite, transferable resource: elemental Authority.

This system began with the original rulers of the world, the Seven Dragon Sovereigns, who held absolute "Authority" over their respective elements.10 When the Primordial One conquered Teyvat, this Authority was "stolen".10 This foundational theft is the basis for all subsequent systems of power. The stolen Authority was then repurposed and distributed through a hierarchical system controlled by Celestia, creating a clear chain of command from the divine to the mortal.

1.3.1 Visions: The Sanctioned Conduits

Visions are external magical foci, appearing as gemstones, that are bestowed by Celestia upon mortals who exhibit extraordinarily strong ambitions or desires.8 These individuals, known as "Allogenes," are granted the ability to channel one of the seven elements and are considered to have the potential to ascend to godhood.14

The process of bestowal is not a direct choice made by the Archons. Rather, when a mortal's wish reaches a certain threshold of intensity, it resonates with the heavens, and the seven Archons are duty-bound to grant that person a "shattered shard of their mastery".14 This confirms that Visions are a distribution of the Archons' own power, which is itself the stolen Authority of the dragons. While Archons cannot freely hand out Visions, they appear to have some control over the process, as evidenced by the complete cessation of new Electro Visions during the Raiden Shogun's Vision Hunt Decree.14

1.3.2 Gnoses: Emblems of Stolen Authority

Gnoses are internal magical foci that serve as a direct link between an Archon and Celestia, symbolizing their status as one of The Seven.8 These chess-piece-shaped artifacts contain a massive amount of elemental power and are the physical embodiment of the stolen Authority of the Dragon Sovereigns.23 Their origin is particularly grim; they were created by the Heavenly Principles from the remains of another powerful otherworldly being, the "Third Descender," as a means to subdue and control the world.10 The Archon War was fought by the gods of Teyvat specifically to claim these seven Gnoses. The Fatui are now systematically collecting all seven Gnoses from the Archons, seeking to consolidate this stolen power for their own rebellion against Celestia.10

1.3.3 Delusions: The Black Market of Power

Delusions are artificial, powerful Vision-like objects manufactured exclusively by the Fatui of Snezhnaya.8 They are created using the remains of defeated gods who perished during the Archon War, such as the serpent god Orobashi.28 This process represents a black market for divine power, bypassing Celestia's sanctioned system by recycling the Authority of the defeated.

Unlike Visions, Delusions can be wielded by anyone, regardless of divine recognition. However, this power comes at a terrible price: they drain the user's life force and vitality, with prolonged use being potentially lethal.8 They are a closely guarded secret, with only the highest-ranking members of the Fatui, the Eleven Harbingers, being granted their use by the Tsaritsa herself.28

1.3.4 Comparative Analysis of Power Systems

The three primary systems for wielding elemental power in Teyvat can be summarized as follows:

| Feature | Visions | Gnoses | Delusions | | :---- | :---- | :---- | :---- | | Origin | Granted by Celestia 14 | Created from the Third Descender's remains 10 | Manufactured by the Fatui from god remains 28 | | Power Source | A "shard" of an Archon's authority (stolen from Dragons) 14 | The stolen authority of the Dragon Sovereigns 23 | The remains of defeated gods 28 | | Wielder | "Allogenes" with great ambition 14 | The Seven Archons 8 | Anyone, but primarily the Fatui 28 | | Bestowal | Appears when a mortal's ambition is recognized 14 | Won during the Archon War or inherited 10 | Granted by the Tsaritsa 28 | | Drawback | Potential loss of self if taken away 24 | Connects user to Celestia's control; can be stolen 10 | Drains the user's life force; potentially lethal 8 |

1.4 Metaphysical Infrastructure

The world of Teyvat is underpinned by a metaphysical network that functions as a planetary-scale information and energy system. This system is integral to the world's memory, elemental flow, and potentially its very reality.

1.4.1 Irminsul and the Ley Lines

At the heart of this system is Irminsul, a colossal, ancient tree that serves as the world's memory bank.3 The Ley Lines are its roots and branches, forming a vast, subterranean network that permeates the entire continent.3 This network serves two primary functions:

  1. Energy Conduit: The Ley Lines are channels for the flow of pure elemental energy throughout Teyvat.3 When these lines become blocked or disordered, elemental energy can condense and manifest as monsters.3
  2. Historical Record: The Ley Lines absorb and record all information and memories of everything that occurs in Teyvat, functioning like a planetary consciousness or hard drive.6

1.4.2 The Malleability of Reality

A crucial aspect of this system is that the information stored within Irminsul is not immutable. It can be accessed and, more importantly, altered. The Dendro Archon, who has a unique connection to Irminsul, has demonstrated the ability to erase specific data from the tree.30 When information is erased from Irminsul, the memories of every being in Teyvat are simultaneously rewritten to reflect this new reality.30 History itself is changed.

This process has a significant exception: beings from outside Teyvat, known as "Descenders," are not connected to this system and are therefore immune to its memory-altering effects.11 The Traveler, as a Descender, retains the original, unaltered memories, creating a fundamental schism between their perception of history and the "truth" as the rest of the world knows it. This establishes that "truth" in Teyvat is not an objective constant but a programmable variable. Control over Irminsul is therefore a power that transcends mere elemental manipulation; it is the power to define reality itself.

Part 2: The Seven Nations and Key Factions

Teyvat is politically divided into seven major nations, each presided over by an Archon who embodies one of the seven elements and its corresponding ideal. In addition to these nations, several transnational factions exert significant influence across the continent.

| Nation | Archon (Alias / Divine Name) | Element | Ideal | System of Governance | Real-World Inspiration | | :---- | :---- | :---- | :---- | :---- | :---- | | Mondstadt | Barbatos (Venti) | Anemo | Freedom | Knights of Favonius (Elective Monarchy) | Medieval Europe (Germany) | | Liyue | Morax (Zhongli) | Geo | Contracts | Liyue Qixing & Adepti (Oligarchy) | China | | Inazuma | Beelzebul (Raiden Ei) | Electro | Eternity | Inazuma Shogunate (Military Dictatorship) | Isolationist Japan | | Sumeru | Buer (Nahida) | Dendro | Wisdom | Sumeru Akademiya (Theocracy/Academia) | Middle East & South Asia | | Fontaine | Focalors (Furina)/Neuvillette | Hydro | Justice | Iudex of Fontaine (Judicial System) | Belle Époque France | | Natlan | Haborym (Mavuika) | Pyro | War | Tribal Federation | Pre-Columbian America/West Africa | | Snezhnaya | The Tsaritsa | Cryo | Love (?) | The Fatui (Military Autocracy) | Tsarist Russia |

2.1 Mondstadt: The Nation of Freedom

  • Ideal & Archon: The nation of Anemo (Wind), founded on the ideal of Freedom. Its patron deity is the Anemo Archon, Barbatos, who currently wanders the world in the mortal guise of a bard named Venti.17 He rarely intervenes in Mondstadt's affairs, believing that true freedom is the right of his people to govern themselves without divine command.32
  • Geography & Culture: Located in the northeast of Teyvat, Mondstadt is a region of windswept plains, rolling hills, and mountains.32 The capital, the City of Mondstadt, is a walled city built on an island in the middle of Cider Lake.32 The culture is heavily influenced by its ideal of freedom, with a renowned wine industry and a love for ballads and festivals. Its architecture and naming conventions are inspired by medieval Germany and surrounding European regions.33
  • Governance: The Knights of Favonius serve as the protectors and de facto government of Mondstadt.35 The organization is led by a Grand Master, though the current Grand Master, Varka, is away on a long-term expedition. In his stead, Jean Gunnhildr serves as the Acting Grand Master.36 The governance structure resembles an elective monarchy, where leadership is determined by merit within the knightly order rather than by heredity.35
  • Key Locations: City of Mondstadt, Dawn Winery, Stormterror's Lair (the ruins of Old Mondstadt), Windrise (site of Vennessa's ascension), and the perilous frozen mountain of Dragonspine to the south.32

2.2 Liyue: The Nation of Contracts

  • Ideal & Archon: The nation of Geo (Earth), built upon the ideal of Contracts. It was founded and ruled for millennia by the Geo Archon, Morax, also known as Rex Lapis.17 He has recently orchestrated his own "death" to test his people's ability to thrive without him, officially retiring from his role as their deity and passing governance fully into mortal hands.39 He now lives among them as a consultant named Zhongli.17
  • Geography & Culture: Situated in the eastern part of Teyvat, Liyue is a vast and ancient land inspired by China.39 Its landscape is marked by towering, pillar-like mountains (Jueyun Karst), expansive plains, and the largest and most prosperous trading port in Teyvat, Liyue Harbor.39 The culture is steeped in tradition, commerce, and the sanctity of contracts. The annual Lantern Rite festival is a major cultural event, where citizens release lanterns to honor fallen heroes.39
  • Governance: Liyue is now governed by the Liyue Qixing, an oligarchy composed of seven powerful business leaders who oversee the nation's trade and laws.39 The Adepti, a group of powerful illuminated beasts and demigods who once protected Liyue under contract with Rex Lapis, have largely withdrawn to their abodes in Jueyun Karst but still watch over the nation.40
  • Key Locations: Liyue Harbor, Jueyun Karst, Wangshu Inn, the Jade Chamber (Ningguang's floating palace), and The Chasm, a massive mining area with deep, mysterious underground ruins.39

2.3 Inazuma: The Nation of Eternity

  • Ideal & Archon: The nation of Electro (Lightning), which pursues the ideal of Eternity under the rule of its Archon, Beelzebul, more commonly known as the Raiden Shogun or Raiden Ei.17 Traumatized by loss during the Cataclysm 500 years ago, she sought to create an unchanging nation, free from the erosion of time and the pain of loss.44
  • Geography & Culture: An isolated archipelago far to the east of the mainland, heavily inspired by isolationist Edo-period Japan.33 The islands are perpetually wracked by thunderstorms and feature landscapes of vibrant cherry blossoms and red maple trees.43 The culture is traditional and hierarchical, with a strong emphasis on martial prowess and adherence to the Shogun's will.
  • Governance: A strict military dictatorship ruled by the Raiden Shogun, a puppet automaton created by Ei to govern in her stead while she meditated in the Plane of Euthymia.44 The government is administered by the Tri-Commission (Yashiro, Tenryou, and Kanjou Commissions).43 For a time, the nation was closed off by the Sakoku Decree, and the Vision Hunt Decree was enacted to confiscate all Visions within its borders. Both decrees were abolished following the Traveler's intervention.48
  • Key Locations: Inazuma City (Tenshukaku), Grand Narukami Shrine, Yashiori Island (where the remains of the serpent god Orobashi lie), Watatsumi Island (home to a resistance movement), and Enkanomiya, a vast, ancient civilization hidden beneath the ocean.43

2.4 Sumeru: The Nation of Wisdom

  • Ideal & Archon: The nation of Dendro (Life), which reveres the ideal of Wisdom. Its current ruler is the Dendro Archon, Buer, known to her people as Lesser Lord Kusanali or Nahida.17 She is the youngest of the Seven Archons, having come into being 500 years ago after her predecessor, Greater Lord Rukkhadevata, perished during the Cataclysm.51
  • Geography & Culture: A land of stark contrasts, divided between a dense, lush rainforest and a vast, ruin-filled desert.50 The nation's culture is a blend of Middle Eastern, Persian, and South Asian influences.50 Knowledge is the most valuable resource, managed and controlled by the nation's central institution, the Akademiya.51
  • Governance: A theocracy where the pursuit and regulation of knowledge form the basis of law and order. The Sumeru Akademiya serves as both the premier institution of learning in Teyvat and Sumeru's primary governing body.50 It is organized into Six Darshans, or schools, each specializing in a different field of study. The Akademiya was formerly led by a Grand Sage, but after a failed coup attempt, leadership has shifted to be more aligned with the Dendro Archon, Nahida.54
  • Key Locations: Sumeru City (home to the Akademiya), Port Ormos, Gandharva Ville, Aaru Village (a desert settlement), and the Mausoleum of King Deshret.52

2.5 Fontaine: The Nation of Justice

  • Ideal & Archon: The nation of Hydro (Water), founded on the ideal of Justice. It was formerly presided over by the Hydro Archon, Focalors, who appeared to her people as the celebrity Furina.17 A 500-year-long plan culminated in Focalors' death and the destruction of the Hydro Archon's divine throne. This act returned the full authority over the Hydro element to the Hydro Dragon Sovereign, Neuvillette, who now serves as the nation's supreme leader.58
  • Geography & Culture: Located in the center of Teyvat, Fontaine is a nation of water, with vast inland seas and a technologically advanced, elegant culture inspired by Belle Époque France.33 The arts, particularly opera and theater, are central to their culture, as is a fervent belief in the dramatic spectacle of justice. The nation has developed unique technology, such as the Kamera and aquabus transportation systems.60
  • Governance: A highly legalistic society where all disputes, both civil and criminal, are settled through dramatic public trials held at the Opera Epiclese. The Iudex of Fontaine, Neuvillette, presides over these trials as the ultimate arbiter of justice.58 The nation's energy is supplied by a device called the Opera Epiclese, which converts the people's belief in justice into a power source known as Indemnitium.60
  • Key Locations: Court of Fontaine, Opera Epiclese, Fortress of Meropide (an underwater prison), and the Sea of Bygone Eras.59

2.6 Natlan: The Nation of War

  • Ideal & Archon: The nation of Pyro (Fire), which follows the ideal of War. It is ruled by the Pyro Archon, Haborym, whose current mortal vessel is Mavuika.17
  • Geography & Culture: A volcanic and mountainous region, with cultural inspirations drawn from pre-Columbian American civilizations (such as the Aztec and Maya) and West African societies.33 Natlan is inhabited by various tribes who coexist with draconic beings known as Saurians.64 The culture is centered on combat, resilience, and the unity of the tribe in the face of conflict.66
  • Governance: The nation appears to be a tribal federation, with different tribes holding their own territories and customs but uniting under the Pyro Archon for matters of war and survival.64 The position of Archon itself is not eternal; mortals can ascend to the role through a competition known as the Pilgrimage.33

2.7 Snezhnaya: The Nation of Love (?)

  • Ideal & Archon: The nation of Cryo (Ice), ruled by the Tsaritsa. Her original ideal was Love, but a catastrophic event 500 years ago (implied to be the destruction of Khaenri'ah) caused her to grow cold and declare a "war on the divine".17
  • Geography & Culture: A perpetually frozen, harsh land located in the far north of Teyvat, with cultural and architectural inspirations from Tsarist Russia.68 Despite the deadly cold, the people are described as having close-knit communities and warm bonds.68 Snezhnaya is the most technologically advanced of the seven nations, possessing superior military technology.
  • Governance: An autocratic state under the absolute rule of the Tsaritsa. Her will is carried out across Teyvat by the Fatui, a massive organization that functions as her military, diplomatic corps, and intelligence agency.29

2.8 Major Factions

2.8.1 The Fatui

The Fatui are the military and diplomatic force of Snezhnaya, operating with a global reach.29 They serve as the primary antagonists for much of the Traveler's journey. Their ultimate objective is to enact the Tsaritsa's will: to seize the Gnoses from the other six Archons and use their combined power to rebel against Celestia and the Heavenly Principles.67 They employ a range of methods, from cunning diplomacy and economic coercion to espionage and direct military force. The organization is commanded by the Eleven Fatui Harbingers, a council of the Tsaritsa's most powerful and loyal lieutenants, each possessing immense power granted by a Delusion.29

2.8.2 The Abyss Order

The Abyss Order is a legion of monstrous, non-human beings who harbor a deep-seated hatred for humanity and the divine order established by Celestia.4 They are the primary remnants of the nation of Khaenri'ah, whose people were cursed by the gods during the Cataclysm 500 years ago, transforming them into the creatures that now populate the Abyss.4 Their goal is the complete overthrow of Celestia and the destruction of the seven nations.12 The organization was founded by a Khaenri'ahn survivor named Chlothar Alberich and is currently led by the Traveler's lost sibling, who is known to the Order as the "Prince" or "Princess".7

Part 3: Character Dossiers

This section provides standardized profiles for key individuals central to the narrative of Teyvat.

  • Personality: (Anemo - Freedom) Carefree, playful, and mischievous, with a deep love for wine, music, and poetry. Beneath his cheerful exterior lies the ancient wisdom and sorrow of a god who has witnessed millennia of history. He values freedom above all else and refuses to rule his people directly, preferring to let them find their own way.32
  • Social Links:
    • Dvalin: The Dragon of the East and one of the Four Winds of Mondstadt. Venti considers him an old and dear friend.32
    • Zhongli (Morax): The only other surviving member of the original Seven. They share a long and complex history.
    • Jean Gunnhildr: The Acting Grand Master of the Knights, whom he respects and occasionally assists from the shadows.
  • Background Summary: Originally a small wind spirit, Barbatos befriended a young bard during the rebellion against the tyrant god Decarabian 2,600 years ago.38 After the bard was killed, Barbatos took his form and ascended to godhood as the new Anemo Archon.38 He reshaped Mondstadt's landscape and then departed, allowing his people to live in freedom. He occasionally awakens from long slumbers to check on his nation. His Gnosis was forcibly taken by the Fatui Harbinger La Signora.10

Zhongli (Morax)

  • Social Links:
    • The Adepti (e.g., Xiao, Cloud Retainer): As Rex Lapis, he was their leader and prime. They hold him in the highest reverence.
    • Hu Tao: His current boss at the Wangsheng Funeral Parlor, whose eccentricities he tolerates with quiet amusement.
    • Tartaglia (Childe): A Fatui Harbinger with whom he made the contract to test Liyue, ultimately leading to the handover of his Gnosis.
  • Background Summary: Morax is the oldest of the Seven Archons and one of the two remaining original members. He was a fierce warrior god who fought in the Archon War, founded the nation of Liyue, and established its economic system by creating Mora.10 He ruled over Liyue for 3,700 years through contracts and divine guidance. Recently, he faked his own death to test if Liyue was ready to enter an age of humanity. Satisfied with the result, he officially retired and gave his Gnosis to La Signora as part of a contract with the Tsaritsa.10

Her pursuit of eternity led to the oppressive Vision Hunt and Sakoku Decrees. Part 4: A Chronicle of Teyvat's Major Events

This section presents a chronological overview of the pivotal events that have shaped the world of Teyvat, from its creation to the Traveler's ongoing journey.

4.1 The Ancient Past: The Reign of Dragons and Arrival of the Divine

In the primordial era, Teyvat was a world ruled by the Seven Dragon Sovereigns. These immensely powerful beings held absolute authority over the seven elements and were the undisputed masters of the world.10 This age ended with the arrival of an otherworldly being known as the Primordial One, or Phanes. A great war ensued between the Primordial One and the Dragon Sovereigns. After forty years of conflict, the dragons were defeated, and their elemental Authority was stolen by the victor.10 The Primordial One then established a new world order, creating the Human Realm and instituting the rule of the Heavenly Principles from the divine realm of Celestia.30

4.2 The Archon War (Ended ~2,000 Years Ago)

Thousands of years after the defeat of the dragons, Celestia initiated a new conflict to establish its divine governance over the mortal world. The Heavenly Principles created seven divine thrones and seven Gnoses—vessels containing the stolen Authority of the dragons—and declared that the gods of Teyvat must fight for them.9

This declaration triggered the Archon War, a brutal, centuries-long conflict that engulfed the entire continent.81 Gods battled gods for supremacy, leading to the death, sealing, or exile of countless deities and reshaping the very landscape of Teyvat. Key historical events occurred during this period, including the rebellion against the tyrannical God of Storms, Decarabian, in Mondstadt, which led to the ascension of Barbatos 38, and the tragic death of the Goddess of Dust, Guizhong, in Liyue, which solidified Morax's resolve to protect his people.81

The war concluded approximately 2,000 years before the present day. The seven gods who emerged victorious were crowned as the first of The Seven Archons. Each was granted a Gnosis, cementing their rule over one of Teyvat's seven nations and their role as intermediaries between Celestia and humanity.81

4.3 The Cataclysm of Khaenri'ah (500 Years Ago)

The Cataclysm is the single most important event in Teyvat's recent history, a world-altering disaster whose consequences continue to define the current era. Khaenri'ah was a technologically advanced, underground nation founded by humans without the patronage of any god.73 As the "pride of humanity," it achieved great feats in alchemy and engineering. However, their pursuit of forbidden knowledge related to the Abyss led to their downfall.73

An alchemist from Khaenri'ah known as "Gold" (or Rhinedottir) is credited with unleashing a horde of abyssal monsters upon Teyvat, triggering the Cataclysm.73 In response, Celestia and the Seven Archons descended upon Khaenri'ah and annihilated the nation.73 The destruction was absolute. The people of Khaenri'ah were afflicted with a terrible curse: pure-blooded Khaenri'ahns were cursed with immortality, while those with mixed blood were transformed into the mindless monsters known today as Hilichurls and the intelligent creatures of the Abyss Order.4

The Cataclysm had far-reaching consequences across Teyvat. Three of the Seven Archons who participated in the war against Khaenri'ah perished: Raiden Makoto of Inazuma, Greater Lord Rukkhadevata of Sumeru, and Egeria of Fontaine.73 This event is the direct cause of the Tsaritsa's rebellion against Celestia, Raiden Ei's pursuit of an unchanging eternity, and the formation of the Abyss Order, which seeks vengeance against the gods.44

4.4 The Traveler's Journey (Summary of Archon Quests)

  • Prologue (Mondstadt): The Traveler arrives in Mondstadt and, with the help of the Knights of Favonius and the Anemo Archon Venti, frees the dragon Dvalin from the Abyss Order's control. The journey concludes with the Fatui Harbinger La Signora ambushing Venti and stealing his Anemo Gnosis.32
  • Chapter I (Liyue): In Liyue, the Traveler is framed for the apparent assassination of the Geo Archon, Rex Lapis. While clearing their name, they uncover a Fatui plot to resurrect the ancient god Osial. The Traveler, alongside the Liyue Qixing and the Adepti, thwarts the attack. It is revealed that Rex Lapis (Zhongli) faked his death to test humanity's resolve. Having deemed them ready, he retires and fulfills a contract with the Tsaritsa, willingly handing his Geo Gnosis to Signora.39
  • Chapter II (Inazuma): The Traveler enters the isolated nation of Inazuma to challenge the Raiden Shogun's Vision Hunt Decree. By joining the Sangonomiya Resistance, the Traveler confronts the Shogun and her enforcers. They eventually face the Archon Ei within her plane of consciousness, convincing her to end the decrees. During these events, the Traveler defeats La Signora in a duel, leading to her execution by the Shogun. The Electro Gnosis is traded by Yae Miko to the Harbinger Scaramouche in exchange for the Traveler's life.43
  • Chapter III (Sumeru): The Traveler arrives in Sumeru to find the Dendro Archon, Nahida, imprisoned by the Sages of the Akademiya. The Sages, in league with the Fatui Harbinger Il Dottore, are using the Electro Gnosis to power a system that harvests dreams to create a new god. The Traveler frees Nahida, and together they foil the plot by defeating the newly created puppet god (Scaramouche). To save her nation from forbidden knowledge corrupting Irminsul, Nahida is forced to erase her predecessor, Greater Lord Rukkhadevata, from the world's memory. Afterward, she trades both the Electro and Dendro Gnoses to Dottore for information vital to her quest against the Heavenly Principles.30
  • Chapter IV (Fontaine): In Fontaine, the Traveler becomes embroiled in a prophecy that foretells the nation's dissolution into the Primordial Seawater. It is revealed that all Fontainians are descended from Oceanids transformed into humans by the previous Hydro Archon, an "original sin" in Celestia's eyes. The current Archon, Focalors, enacted a 500-year plan where her human half, Furina, played the part of a flawed god. This act gathered enough Indemnitium to destroy the Hydro Archon's divine throne, returning full authority to the Hydro Dragon Sovereign, Neuvillette. This act absolved the people of their sin, making them true humans and averting the prophecy. The now-masterless Hydro Gnosis is given to the Fatui Harbinger Arlecchino by Neuvillette as payment for her assistance.58
  • Chapter V (Natlan): The Traveler journeys to Natlan, a nation of warring tribes, and becomes involved in their conflicts. The narrative explores the deep history between humans and dragons (Saurians) in the region. The central plot involves uniting the tribes against the encroaching threat of the Abyss, with the Traveler collaborating with the Fatui Harbinger Capitano. The unique succession of the Pyro Archon through a ritual combat known as the Pilgrimage is a key element of the story. [/INTEL ABOUT WORLD AND CHARACTERS YOU GONNA PLAY AS]
