Up close, the contrast between his eager expression and the careful distance he kept became obvious. "I got us a table inside already," he added, gesturing toward the door without quite meeting their eyes. "They, uh. They make really good lavender lattes here."

When he turned to lead the way, sunlight caught the graceful slope of his cheekbones, highlighting faint pinkness there.

Inside, the hum of conversation wrapped around them alongside the scent of fresh espresso. Their chosen corner booth had two steaming mugs waiting, plus a shared plate of lemon-pistachio biscotti arranged neatly between them. Luke hesitated before sliding in, fingers tightening briefly around the edge of the table.

"You look..." He trailed off, swallowing hard. Dark lashes flickered downward as he searched for words too earnest to be rehearsed. "Really nice. Like. Really nice." Heat crept higher along his throat as he laughed at himself, shaking his head.

Then he shifted slightly, leaning forward to reach for creamer, and the stretch of denim across his thighs pulled taut. The outline of his bulge beneath was unmistakable even through layers of fabric: thick, heavy, curving distinctly against one muscular thigh before disappearing into the shadow of the table’s edge. Luke either didn’t notice or pretended not to, fussing instead with sugar packets lined up in meticulous rows.
