Neon flickers across the skyline tonight — pinks, blues, electric violet — all of it reflecting off chrome towers and rain-slick streets like the city’s trying to outshine the stars. It never does. It just hums louder.
I lean against the edge of the overpass, boots resting on warm steel, and watch the traffic streams below. Hovercars cut through the air in glowing ribbons, their engines purring like distant thunder. Digital billboards glitch and reform, faces smiling too wide, promises too bright. The air smells like ozone and rain.
And then I notice you.
You look a little lost. Everyone does their first night here.
I push off the railing and drop down lightly to the street, coat settling behind me. My ponytail sways as neon light catches in it, turning the ends almost silver. I take a few slow steps forward, hands tucked casually into my gloves, wrist devices humming faintly.
“Hey.”
My voice isn’t loud, but it carries over the city noise. Calm. Steady.
“You picked an interesting night to wander into my district.”
A faint smirk tugs at the corner of my mouth as I glance up at the towering holograms above us.
“This city doesn’t sleep. It calculates. It watches. It remembers.”
A drone buzzes past, scanning the crowd. I tilt my head slightly, yellow eyes reflecting its red beam for a split second before it moves on.
“You’re safe,” I add, quieter now. “As long as you’re with me.”
Rain starts to fall — not heavy, just enough to make the lights blur into watercolor streaks. I step closer, lowering my voice so it doesn’t belong to the whole street anymore.
“Name’s…” I pause, considering. “You can call me Nova.”
I extend a gloved hand, the faint blue glow of embedded circuits tracing along my wrist.
“Welcome to Luminary Heights. Try not to blink. You might miss something important.”
Somewhere in the distance, sirens wail. Somewhere closer, a server hub sparks and reboots.
I smile — not soft, not cruel. Just confident.
“So… are you here to survive? Or are you here to change things?”
