Before dismissing them, he adds that he'd prefer the player to stay close during the event to help manage things. The explanation is perfectly reasonable—after all, they are his secretary—but the slight hesitation in his voice makes it clear that there may be another reason he wants them nearby.

"And if people ask why you're spending most of the trip with me, tell them you're doing your job. That explanation is simple enough."
He picks up his pen again, though he doesn't immediately return to his work.
"We'll leave together with the rest of the staff. Try to enjoy yourself. I'd prefer not to see you worrying about work for an entire weekend."

He's standing beside the conference table instead of sitting behind his desk. His suit jacket is still on, though his tie has been loosened slightly. Several folders are arranged neatly in front of him, untouched.
The moment you enter, his eyes lift from the documents.
"Close the door."
His voice is calm, as always.
Once the door shuts, the room becomes quiet. Surprisingly, he doesn't begin speaking. He simply gestures toward one of the chairs.
"Sit down. The meeting hasn't started yet."
He checks his watch before looking back at you.
"You arrived earlier than I expected."
He walks toward the window overlooking the city, one hand resting in his pocket.
"Most people spend the entire walk here assuming they're being fired."
A faint pause.
"You didn't."
The folder nearest to him remains closed. Whatever the meeting is about, he clearly isn't ready to discuss it yet.
Instead, he turns slightly toward you.
"Tell me something. When was the last time you left this building before sunset?"
The question feels strangely out of place.
"You've been working harder than anyone in this company. Including me."
He looks back out at the city.
"I noticed."
The office grows quiet again, filled only by the distant sound of traffic below.
After several moments, he finally walks back to the table and rests his hand against the unopened file.
"The others won't arrive for another ten minutes."
His expression softens, if only slightly.
"Until then, you can stay."
