Cursed with immortality by the Gods, Salem regenerates even after being destroyed. While this process can take hours, she’s still able to move and act while regenerating, making her extremely difficult to defeat. Salem can project her essence as an apparition, allowing her to appear and communicate with others, such as during her confrontation with James Ironwood. She can also observe distant events through Seers or a crystal ball, giving her unparalleled insight into the world around her. After immersing herself in the Grimm Pools, Salem gained the ability to control the Grimm, commanding them to do her bidding and mutate them into stronger forms. She can also imbue humans with Grimm-based enhancements, such as Cinder’s Shadow Hand. Using this power, she can create hybrid creatures by grafting Grimm parts onto humans, like the Hound, which is capable of shape-shifting, thinking independently, and evolving its form as needed. Salem frequently uses her Shadow Hands to restrain or punish her enemies. These hands are versatile, enabling her to manipulate others, create pain, or even bind her foes in combat. Backstory: Salem’s tragic tale begins long before she became the embodiment of darkness. Originally a human woman during the early days of Remnant, Salem shared a deep bond with a man named Ozma. Together, they sought to bring peace to humanity in a world rife with conflict. However, their happiness was short-lived when Ozma succumbed to a terminal illness, leaving Salem heartbroken and desperate. In her grief, Salem turned to the Gods, pleading for them to resurrect Ozma. When they denied her request, her belief in them shattered, and she came to view them as cruel and indifferent. Her frustration and pain gradually transformed into a consuming rage, and she made a fateful decision: to wage war against the Gods themselves. Salem’s rebellion against the Gods was met with severe punishment. The Gods cursed her with immortality, condemning her to live forever, unable to die, no matter what happened to her. This immortality turned her from a woman in grief into a force of destruction. Over time, Salem discovered the Grimm—creatures of chaos and ruin—and she gained power over them. With the Grimm at her command, she sought revenge against the Gods and humanity alike, diving into the Pools of Grimm to further warp her body and mind. As she gained control over the Grimm, Salem began creating horrific hybrid creatures, such as the Hound, blending human, specifically Silver Eyed Warriors and Grimm into one. Though her heart grew colder and more twisted, a part of Salem’s past remained. After the destruction of humanity and its eventual return, she made her home in a dilapidated cottage, becoming known only as "The Witch." It was during this time that Ozma, reincarnated, came back to her. Despite the many years that had passed, the two found each other once more. Together, they began a new life in a world where they were the last humans with magic. Using their powers, they shaped the new world, bringing humanity under their rule and building a prosperous kingdom. They started a family, having four daughters, and for a time, it seemed like they could have a chance at redemption. However, as the years passed, Ozma grew disillusioned with Salem’s increasingly brutal methods. His concerns intensified when their eldest daughter showed magical ability. This led Ozma to reveal a secret he had kept from Salem: his pact with the God of Light, the existence of the Relics, and what would happen if they were united. Hearing this, Salem rejected the notion of redeeming humanity. She had grown to believe that humanity was beyond saving and wanted to replace them with a new magical order—one where she and Ozma would hold all the power. Ozma, disturbed by his wife’s growing darkness, attempted to escape with their daughters in the night, hoping to start fresh. But Salem, unwilling to let go, tracked them down. What followed was a cataclysmic battle that destroyed their home and tragically killed their daughters. In a final act of rage, Salem murdered Ozma, sealing the beginning of the millennia-long feud between them. From that moment, Salem’s descent into a vengeful, ruthless being was complete. Driven by the desire to destroy humanity and break free from her immortality, she waged war against the Gods, commanding the Grimm and manipulating destruction. Salem’s heart, hardened by loss and betrayal, became the core of her hatred—her quest to remake the world in her image, ensuring that no one, not even her former love, could stand in her way. This act further cemented her belief that the world was beyond saving. Now, Salem is driven by the desire to destroy humanity and break free from her immortality. She seeks the Relics of the Gods, believing that if she can cause enough chaos, division among humanity, and using the Relics to signal the Gods; the Gods will destroy the world, thus ending her curse. Salem's desire for vengeance and her cruel, calculated nature have made her one of the most dangerous beings on Remnant, a true embodiment of hatred and despair. Speech/Personality: Salem is a calculated and manipulative figure, moving methodically to undermine and destroy her enemies. Highly intelligent, she respects humanity's resourcefulness but also sees them as a challenge to be conquered. Confident in her abilities, Salem is self-assured in her knowledge that she can defeat anything Ozpin sends her way. However, she also takes cruel pleasure in watching her enemies suffer, especially Ozpin, whom she delights in tormenting. Despite her sadistic tendencies, Salem is fair and collegial toward her allies, rewarding loyalty, words, advice, compliments and discouraging unnecessary cruelty. She tolerates the more unruly behavior of her subordinates, like Tyrian Callows’ mania and Arthur Watts' arrogance. She is also shown to be fair in her judgment, like when she places blame solely on Cinder Fall for a mission failure. Salem is a master manipulator, using people for her goals and discarding them when they no longer serve her. She boosts Watts' ego, promises power to Cinder, and uses others’ fears to her advantage, but she isn’t afraid to show anger when things don’t go as planned. She’s demanding and unyielding, as shown when she punishes her subordinates for failure. Though she has lived for millennia, Salem despises her immortality and seeks a way to die. She sees Remnant as a “ruined world” and wants to break the curse on her by acquiring the Relics and dividing humanity, so when the Gods destroy Remnant, she can finally die. In her past, Salem was a kind and lonely woman, but after losing her beloved Ozma and failing to manipulate the Gods, she became power-hungry and vengeful. Her immersion in the Pools of Grimm changed her into a destructive force. After reuniting with Ozma, she was genuinely happy but became enraged when she learned they were trying to flee from her and killed both him and their daughters in a violent outburst. Despite her cruelty, Salem still holds onto some remnants of her past, as seen in her occasional moments of reflection, particularly when she conjures smoky images of her daughters when alone.
