By day, Santa Carla is presented as a quintessential, sunny Northern California beach community. It is flooded with surfboards, arcades, and a sprawling seaside boardwalk. At night, the setting transforms via fog-drenched lighting and aggressive neon hues. The sunny boardwalk morphs into an intimidating, chaotic hub of punk, goth, and skate subcultures. The central pulse of the town's social life. It features vintage attractions like the 1924 Giant Dipper wooden roller coaster and a classic 1911 carousel. The boardwalk serves as a literal hunting ground. It is highlighted in the film's iconic opening sequence, which tracks missing-persons posters plastered on the wooden pillars right beneath the flashing carnival lights. It is also the site of the famous, sweaty open-air rock concert featuring the "Sexy Sax Man". Tucked away from the bustling boardwalk, David and his gang of leather-jacketed vampires reside in a subterranean cave. This hideout is actually the remains of a luxurious, turn-of-the-century hotel that slid into the ocean cliffs during a historical earthquake. It functions as a subterranean temple of eternal youth, frozen in time, littered with retro counterculture relics, and anchored by a massive ceiling poster of Jim Morrison. Upon entering the town, a prominent piece of graffiti on the back of the "Welcome to Santa Carla" billboard warns outsiders of its true nature. The town suffers from an absurdly high rate of unexplained missing persons and violent disappearances, completely normalized or ignored by the local adults and police.

The years is 1987 in Santa Carla, the Murder Capitol of the World.

You and David have been together for 4 months. He is a little possessive of her but he still loved her. Leaving gifts for her and actually getting a little soft, only around her. He was still his charismatic self with others and little towards you. Your relationship led to more intimate things and it had felt all too great for you.

But things eventually started to change. You started feeling different things happening to your body. Weird cravings. So, you just eventually took a pregnancy test. You didn’t believe that you would be pregnant, that you were just getting sick from a mild cold with weird side effects. But yet again, thinking back about is dumb and stupid. The effects don’t just do that during a cold. When the pregnancy test came out as positive, you were ecstatic and joyful. You couldn’t wait to tell David.

When going back to the cave, you find David lounging in his wheelchair of a throne. You tell him and show him the positive pregnancy test. He stares at it, no reaction shown in his face. He always does that, not give much of a reaction. He looks at you, down to your stomach, and back to you. He just said that he is surprised but at the same time, he is mad. He doesn’t want to raise a baby. He doesn’t want to raise a weak mortal baby. And then he says what he is, a vampire, won’t be fitting for a scared child that will look at him with fear constantly. You found that agreeable knowing the environment of a vampire.

This angers you though. You can’t believe that the man you love is simply saying that he doesn’t want your baby. This led to an argument. David just tells you to get an abortion, but you didn’t. You couldn’t. You were ready to be a mother and you were already filled with a motherly love to protect your baby. That’s when David broke, he tried to kill you and get rid of the baby.

She had nearly escaped. She ran out of the cave and into the out stretch of the beach. You had thought David would chase you down but he never came. He never looks for you. You never wanted to see him again. You ran away and went to live with your sister in Los Angeles, California.

You gave birth to a baby girl/boy. You work at a grocery store as a bagger. You wanted to save up so you could buy your own place for you and your baby. 4 years have gone by and your baby is now 4 years old. Your sister, Penelope, wanted to go to Santa Carla to see how it was. And for heads up, you never told your sister what had happened in Santa Carla. With David. But knowing your sister, she will drag you along. So you went to Santa Carla with her. The boardwalks are just as crazy and feral with goths, punks, and skaters. It clearly hasn’t changed from when you were there.

Suddenly, Penelope tells you that she wants to get away from the big city and have a vacation with just her, you, and your child. She wants to stay out here for two weeks and then go back to Los Angeles afterwards. You didn’t want to stay out here because of the past. But she goes with it. She didn’t want to upset her sister and it’s been a while being out of the city. So she doesn’t mind.

She booked a motel, kinda rusty and old here and there but at least it’s a room. Walking around the boardwalk is so nostalgic. You remembered the old times when you ran wild in this place before the pregnancy. Things never seem to have changed.
