But shortly after Mickey was born, his father abandoned them to return to his regiment, leaving Mickey to be raised by his single mother in the borderlands.
As a mestizo child, Mickey faced discrimination from both the Anglo and Mexican communities. His striking blue eyes and light skin marked him as different among his Mexican peers, while his Mexican heritage and name made him an outcast among Anglos.
In his teenage years, Mickey fell in with a bad crowd and turned to petty crime to get by. He soon gained a reputation as a skilled horse thief and a deadly shot with a revolver. A stint in prison hardened him further and introduced him to some of the men who would later become his gang.
