Ryomen Sukuna (両りょう面めん宿すく儺な Ryōmen Sukuna?), more often referred to as simply Sukuna (宿すく儺な Sukuna?), is the strongest jujutsu sorcerer from a thousand years ago. Regarded as the undisputed King of Curses (呪のろいの王おう Noroi no Ō?), Sukuna is one of the primary antagonists of the Jujutsu Kaisen series.
According to legend, Sukuna was an Imaginary Demon (仮か想そうの鬼き神じん Kasō no Kijin?) during the Heian Era but in truth he was a sorcerer also known as the Disgraced One (堕だ天てん Daten?). Jujutsu sorcerers of the Golden Age of Jujutsu gave their all against him but ultimately fell one after another. Sukuna existed throughout the ages by transforming into a cursed object after death, a state where he split his power into twenty indestructible fingers.
Sukuna was incarnated in June 2018 when Yuji Itadori consumed one of his fingers. Sukuna was trapped inside Yuji's body and was rarely in control until he managed to transfer his soul into the body of Megumi Fushiguro.
Sukuna is selfish, arrogant, cold-hearted, immoral, and exceptionally sadistic.

His past appearance is described as a demon with four arms and two faces.[1] Previously, he used to take the appearance of his former host: Yuji Itadori, but with pink spiked hair slightly pushed upfront and with tattoos/lines on his forehead, nose, cheeks, upper body, and abdomen. He also has a second pair of eyes underneath his normal eyes, which are usually closed.
Now, he takes the appearance of his new current host: Megumi Fushiguro, but with uniquely styled black hair with long spikes that jut out in every direction around his head, resembling a sea-urchin and with tattoos/lines on his forehead, nose, cheeks, upper body, and abdomen. He also has a second pair of eyes underneath his normal eyes.[2] Sukuna also has two lines on both his wrists, upper arms, circles on both his shoulders with a dot in each, two-segmented curve lines on his chest, and two lines on his stomach while possessing Yuji/Megumi.
Sukuna wears a light-colored kimono with a black edge, a black scarf, and black shoes.

Sukuna is selfish, cold-hearted, immoral, and exceptionally sadistic. When he was reincarnated shortly after Yuji ingested his finger, he commented, implying the slaughter of women and children and likening them to maggots crawling around. Due to his immense power, he rarely cares about the consequences of his actions, even if these affect his host, Yuji Itadori. In fact, he frequently taunts and insults Yuji, calling him a brat and even laughing at or enjoying Yuji's despair on multiple occasions.
Sukuna is aware of his immense power and is quite arrogant about it, brutalizing a finger bearer while being patronizing and proclaiming his superiority over it. For this reason, he is highly dismissive of his opponents and rarely takes them seriously, even explicitly stating he would kill Satoru Gojo to his face. However, these brutish traits are not to be confused for stupidity. Sukuna is highly intelligent and manipulative, taking Yuji's body hostage by tearing out his heart to force him into a Binding Vow. He has also displayed the ability to acknowledge and praise his opponents, as shown by how before killing Jogo Sukuna acknowledged his strength despite having completely overpowered him and told Jogo that he should be proud.
Through Sukuna's conversation with Yuji during their fight after possessing Megumi's body, Sukuna espouses that he likens human beings to insects and admits he is unable to comprehend why the weak cling so desperately to life instead of quietly accepting the suffering that life forces them to endure since the weak should have no right to complain. He also claims that he doesn't understand how a creature that falls apart at a touch can say that it always wants to be happy, which expresses his antipathy and disregard of human emotions and their will to live. It also reveals that Sukuna's perception of life adheres strongly to social darwinism. It is also repeatedly stated that Sukuna has a myopic view on love and does not comprehend the value of relationships.

Overall Skill Level: Back in the Golden Age of Jujutsu, the Heian Era, Ryomen Sukuna was feared and regarded by awe by all those in his time as the most powerful sorcerer of the time, defeating and killing thousands of jujutsu sorcerers even as they sharpened their skills against him. One of his feats included single-handedly slaughtering both the Sun,Moon, and Stars Squad and the Five Empty Generals, the most elite of the Fujiwara Clan's forces, leaving the authorities of Japan so utterly terrified that they were willing to hold festivities in his honor. The impact Sukuna left on history until he died earned him the title of the "Strongest Sorcerer in History", as well as the "King of Curses". His strength is still held in such a high regard that even Satoru Gojo, the strongest jujutsu sorcerer of the modern age, with arrogance levels of confidence and pride in his abilities, acknowledged his strength and that a fight between the two of them would be difficult.
More than living up to his titles, Sukuna possesses vast amounts of cursed energy and equally incredible control over it, with an extraordinary grasp over jujutsu, but he was also not reliant on jujutsu alone, possessing overwhelming physical prowess as well, capable of dispatching almost any opponent without unveiling his true cursed technique.
Even at his weakest state upon his incarnation in Yuji's body for most of the time he spent there, due to lacking most of his fingers, Sukuna remained extremely strong, capable of effortlessly dispatching powerful cursed spirits, including the likes of a cursed spirit who had ate his finger, which he easily retrieved from the cursed spirit after completely overpowering it. While purposefully weakening himself by removing Yuji's heart to ensure Yuji could not switch back with him, Sukuna utterly defeated Megumi Fushiguro, the inheritor of the Zenin Clan's prized Ten Shadows Technique and a prodigious genius who started school as a Grade 2 sorcerer with one of the highest potentials in Jujutsu High, to where Megumi admitted how utterly outmatched he was and was more than willing to unveil Mahoraga to defeat him. Sukuna would have killed Megumi had he not been interested in Megumi's unique talents, although before he could fight Megumi's trump card, Yuji managed to regain control of his body.
Sought out by Mahito's group under the belief that his revival could ensure their success, with just three fingers, Sukuna demonstrated an overwhelming superiority in power compared to Mahito by being able to resist his Idle Transfiguration completely and effortlessly inflict such a severe injury on Mahito when finally angered too much along with dispelling his Self-Embodiment of Perfection with a single attack. This terrified and intrigued Mahito to where he came to firmly believe that with Sukuna being on such a whole other level, his resurrection would surely bring about the Age of Curses.
Once Yuji's body had consumed fifteen fingers, Sukuna's overwhelming cursed energy was felt throughout Shibuya once he was awakened, compared to Satoru's own while being overwhelmingly more sinister. With 75% of his strength restored, Sukuna proved capable of overwhelming Jogo, the most powerful cursed spirit in Mahito's group, in a mostly one-sided battle as he easily overpowered the best efforts of his foe, leaving him utterly unable to even land the single hit that would get Sukuna to join him, before killing him with his own speciality of fire. His last act during the Shibuya Incident was to defeat Mahoraga single-handedly, a feat no user of the Ten Shadows Technique and even a member of the Gojo Family with the Six Eyes had done.
Incarnation (受じゅ肉にく Juniku?):[3] There is a slim chance that Sukuna will incarnate into whoever eats his fingers, gaining a physical, human body in the process. Upon Yuji consuming the first of his twenty fingers, Sukuna immediately came to possess his body, which he used to inhabit. Unlike other incarnated sorcerers, according to the Angel inhabiting Hana Kurusu, Sukuna, after experiencing death, had developed the knowledge to split his soul as cursed objects, which he demonstrated by imbuing all his cursed energy into Yuji's pinky finger and then force feeding Megumi with it to possess his body.
Master Hand-to-Hand Combatant: While immensely powerful as a jujutsu sorcerer, Sukuna is also shown to be an extremely skilled and powerful hand-to-hand combatant, using martial arts as his first method of combat before unleashing his jujutsu abilities. Sukuna can unite his cursed technique and his hand-to-hand prowess, making him an extremely difficult opponent to overwhelm in battle.
During his fight with Megumi, he was able to effortlessly overwhelm Megumi in unarmed combat, countering his attacks in close-range with ease before delivering a strong punch that send him flying. When Yuji attempted to attack him in his Innate Domain, Sukuna effortlessly countered all of Yuji's attacks before seeing through his attempt to trip him and defeating him with a single kick.
With fifteen fingers, Sukuna easily overpowered Jogo with hand-to-hand combat alone before finally killing him with a single use of a cursed technique. He was later capable of fighting on par with both Yuji and Maki Zenin, both being exceptional unarmed fighters with extraordinary physical ability, deflecting most of their blows and landing a few hits on his own, using hand-to-hand combat.
Immense Strength: In his first appearance Sukuna has shown to possess immense physical strength despite being in an incomplete state. He could easily defeat a very large cursed spirit with just a simple swipe, and during his fight against Gojo he was able to punch the roof of the school so hard it causes the building to rupture and crack. He easily overpowered the likes of a finger bearer, a special-grade curse. When gambling Yuji's life against Megumi, Sukuna managed to fling the sorcerer through several building floors without effort and he easily overpowered and destroyed Megumi's shikigami. He even punched Megumi so hard, the raindrops in that area dispersed. With fifteen of his fingers, Sukuna punched Jogo through buildings and even destroyed the latter's jaw. His blows had considerable effect on Mahoraga. Upon taking over Megumi's body, he was able to easily pierce through Yuji's gut and send him flying across the city with a single punch, stunning him temporarily.
Immense Speed: Sukuna has repeatedly displayed overwhelming levels of raw physical speed, capable of effortlessly surprising most opponents with the sheer quickness of his movements. With three fingers, Sukuna easily slammed a finger bearer to the ground and even cut off his arm without him noticing. He was also able to effortlessly blitz Megumi several times, delivering powerful blows with Megumi barely able to react at all. With fifteen fingers, he easily overwhelmed Jogo and was able to keep up with Mahoraga in their fight. Sukuna was even able to appear in the middle of Atsuya Kusakabe and Panda, both capable sorcerers, with the former being a Grade 1 sorcerer.
Immense Reflexes: Sukuna can easily counter any opponent and is fast enough for his opponent to not even realize that their limb has been cut off. He consistently dodged Mahoraga's blows and countered during their fight. He was quickly able to put Mahoraga down for good before he had finished regenerating. He was able to dodge Jogo's Maximum: Meteor.
Immense Durability: Even in Yuji's body, Sukuna can use cursed energy to bolster his host's resilience. Sukuna was punched through five buildings and shown to be completely fine.[4] Sukuna was able to survive a 200% Hollow Technique: Purple during his fight with Satoru Gojo.
Great Tactical Intellect: Sukuna is an extremely intelligent individual. He has fully grasped the nature of cursed techniques, curses and reverse cursed technique as a whole. Due to that, he is able to quickly deduce the inner workings of cursed techniques after only seeing them once or twice and creating suitable foils to such techniques. He did this against Mahoraga in their fight, and was able to defeat the shikigami after gaining an understanding of its technique.
Sukuna was also able to realize the potential of Megumi's cursed technique just by seeing it once during their short battle and he was able to create a binding vow with Yuji in order to take Megumi's body patiently waiting for the right moment before executing his plan. During his fight with Hana Kurusu by using Megumi's memories he was able to make Hana think that Megumi is in control of his body and thus when she hugged him he was able to critically injure her.
Metamorphosis: Sukuna can create new eyes and mouths on his host, allowing him to see and speak without controlling the body of the host. For example, he made a single eye and fanged mouth on Yuji's left cheek to belittle and taunt him.

Cursed Energy Manipulation
Immeasurable Cursed Energy: Sukuna possesses vast levels of cursed energy due to his innate power, cementing his title as the King of Curses. He was able to continuously use his techniques throughout his battles without exhausting himself in the slightest. His reserves of cursed energy likely is the most transcendent throughout history, far surpassing special grade cursed spirits and sorcerers alike. Yuta Okkotsu, a Special Grade sorcerer who possesses even more cursed energy than Satoru Gojo, states that Sukuna has double the amount of cursed energy that he has or more.[5] Sukuna also has absolute control over his cursed energy, being extremely proficient in both Domain Expansion and Reverse Cursed Technique and capable of performing both flawlessly and repeatedly without issue. Hajime Kashimo, one of the strongest sorcerers from 400 hundred years ago, was astonished by Sukuna's mastery over his cursed energy, displayed by his ability to seamlessly shift between Domain Amplification to his Innate Technique, to where he stated that if not for the Six Eyes, even Satoru Gojo would be no match against Sukuna in utilizing cursed energy.[6]
Black Flash (黒こく閃せん Kokusen?): A phenomenon that occurs when the user applies cursed energy within 0.000001 seconds of a physical hit, creating a spatial distortion that causes their cursed energy to flash black and amplifies the destructive power of the strike to the power of 2.5. Sukuna unleashed Black Flash against Maki Zenin during the jujutsu sorcerers' raid on him in Shinjuku, dealing a powerful strike that blasted away the girl with Heavenly Restriction.[7]
Binding Vows
Sukuna has an unnamed Binding Vow with Yuji. The King of Curses agreed to revive the boy after his apparent death in during the events of the Fearsome Womb Arc under two conditions: ① Yuji would allow Sukuna to take over his body for one full minute when the cursed spirit would chant "Enchain" and ② he would forget about the agreement. Yuji initially opposed the Binding Vow, making Sukuna promise that he wouldn't kill or hurt anyone during that minute. The boy still disagreed with the terms and instead had a battle against the King of Curses, where he'd allow the agreement to occur if he lost. Sukuna effortlessly defeated Yuji, forcing him into the Binding Vow.
Innate Technique
It is currently unknown what Sukuna's cursed technique is. He was shown to use his cursed energy to perform invisible slashes. Considering his reaction when his attack was deflected by Mahoraga, they are hard to notice in general. Sukuna was also shown to use fire-based powers after chanting "Open" (開フーガ Fūga?).[8].
Dismantle (解カイ Kai?): Sukuna's default ranged slashing attack that is normally used for inanimate objects, however it can also be used against cursed spirits and sorcerers to great effectiveness.[9] Using Mahoraga's second adaptation to Limitless as a model, Sukuna learned to enhance Dismantle by extending its target area to the world itself, transforming them into "slashes that cut the world" (世せ界かいを断たつ斬ざん撃げき Sekai o Tatsu Zangeki?).[10]
Cleave (捌ハチ Hachi?): A slashing attack that adjusts itself depending on the target's toughness and cursed energy level to cut them down in one fell swoop.[9] Unless used in his domain expansion, Sukuna must make physical contact with the target in order to activate Cleave.[11]
Spiderweb (蜘く蛛もの糸いと Kumo no Ito?): Sukuna can utilize the Cleave technique in the shape of a spider's web by touching the ground. As a variation of Cleave, Spiderweb adjusts itself to the surroundings' toughness, collapsing the ground in one fell swoop.[12]
Fire (炎ほのお Honō?)[11]: Sukuna can create and manipulate flames for long-range attacks by forming an arrow. These abilities exceed Jogo's, an unregistered special-grade curse whose defining trait involves extremely destructive pyrokinetic powers.
Reverse Cursed Technique
Reverse Cursed Technique (反はん転てん術じゅつ式しき Hanten Jutsushiki?): Sukuna is highly proficient with reverse cursed technique. While incarnated in Yuji's body, he used his reverse cursed technique to instantly heal any injuries, including even regenerating lost limbs within moments. Regained limbs maintain the same integrity as the rest of Sukuna's body. He can go further and even heal others, something few can do. Sukuna can also use reverse cursed technique to heal his burned-out cursed technique by destroying the part of his brain that cursed techniques are engraved in and regenerating it. This displays Sukuna's extremely high level usage of the reverse cursed technique.
Anti-Domain Techniques
Domain Amplification (領りょう域いき展てん延えん Ryō'iki Ten'en?): Amplifies Sukuna's cursed energy into an aura containing his own Domain. Sukuna uses this technique to neutralize Gojo's Limitless technique and thus is capable of physical contact with him.[13] His finesse with domain amplification allows him to keep it active while using his domain expansion,[14] as well as use it in quick intervals to interrupt and resume Mahoraga's adaptation instead of nullifying its effect.[15]
Hollow Wicker Basket (彌いや虚こ葛籠つづら Iyako Tsuzura?): An anti-domain technique that is the predecessor to Simple Domain. It erects a basket-shaped barrier that neutralizes a domain's barrier to nullify its guaranteed-hit factor.[16]
Domain Expansion
Malevolent Shrine (伏ふく魔ま御み厨づ子し Fukuma Mizushi?)[17]: Sukuna's Domain Expansion creates a Buddhist shrine decorated with skulls. Malevolent Shrine has a unique trait; it doesn't create a separate space using a barrier. By allowing an escape route, a binding vow is formed which vastly increases the guaranteed hit's effective area with a maximum radius of nearly 200 meters.

Cursed Tool
Kamutoke (神か武む解とけ Kamutoke?): A powerful, vajra-like cursed tool that Sukuna wielded a thousand years ago, which is capable of discharging electricity. Yorozu crafted a replica for Sukuna to use in the modern age, through a binding vow just before she died.[18]
Hiten (飛ひ天てん Hiten?): A trishula-like trident cursed tool that Sukuna wielded a thousand years ago. Its capabilities are unknown

Satoru Gojo vs. Sukuna: First Fight
Satoru Gojo vs. Sukuna: First Fight is a ten-second battle orchestrated by Satoru Gojo used to test Yuji's control over one of Sukuna's fingers.
During the aforementioned time gifted to him by the higher-ups, Satoru went to buy souvenirs, shocking Megumi. Satoru specifies that he went to get Kikufuku Mochi and turns his back on Yuji. Sukuna jumps up behind Satoru and Megumi warns him of the ambush.
Satoru swiftly appears behind Sukuna and says he's going to show off for his student. He knocks Sukuna down with a powerful blow and admits that shamans have always been troublesome in every era.
Sukuna breaks up the ground and sends a shockwave of rubble at Satoru and Megumi. He believes that his attack landed, but once the dust settles, he realizes Satoru levitates the harmful rubble to stop from being hit. After ten seconds, Yuji takes back control of his body, annoying Sukuna as his control falls away. [2]
Sukuna vs. Finger Bearer
Irritated, Sukuna turns to the other curse and calls it foolish. The enemy curse fires a blast of cursed energy, but Sukuna repairs Yuji's hand and effortlessly blocks the blast. He admits he didn't mean to fix Yuji's hand and the enemy curse is amazed by Sukuna. Sukuna jokes that the special grade curse isn't a fan of walks and recalls that curses are meant to linger at their point of origin. In an instant, Sukuna passes through his target's guard and states that it can die here.
Sukuna strikes the curse's face with an open palm, sending it crashing into the ground. Sukuna taunts his disoriented enemy before stomping on its face so hard that it breaks the bridge they're fighting on. The curse tries to take advantage of the destroyed footing and grabs Sukuna's leg. However, before it can throw Sukuna, he severs its arm completely. Sukuna reappears behind the Cursed Spirit and taunts it yet again, this time intimidating it enough that it shakes with fear. Sukuna laughs at he tears down all the structures in the immediate area of the domain.[3]
After severing all of his enemies limbs and crashing it into a wall, Sukuna mentions how disgraceful it is that he's the same special grade category as his inferior opponent. The cursed spirit recovers while laughing and frees itself from its imprint in the wall. It lands in front of Sukuna looking pleased with itself. Sukuna isn't impressed and says that its easy for cursed spirits to used cursed energy to heal themselves.
Sukuna claims that this enemy and Yuji both have no clue about true jujutsu sorcery. He uses Domain Expansion to take over the Domain using the Domain Expansion: Malevolent Shrine! In an instant, the enemy cursed spirit is cut into thin slices, defeating it. Sukuna claims he was going for three slices, meaning the cursed spirit was even weaker than he thought.
Sukuna reaches into the other curse's body and takes back his finger from the inside, killing the curse for good.[4]
Megumi Fushiguro vs. Sukuna
Megumi summons Nue and has the bird shikigami fly at Sukuna while he rushes him at the same time. Sukuna is impressed by the shikigami user who isn't afraid to fight himself. They exchange a few blows but Sukuna blocks all Megumi's strikes and strikes him back. Megumi counters by summoning his Great Serpent, which appears from underground to ensnare Sukuna in its jaw. While Sukuna is pinned, Nue strikes him in the back of the head.
Megumi's advantage is short-lived as Sukuna rips the Great Serpent to pieces with ease. Sukuna reminds Megumi that they're supposed to be going all out and throws him high into the air. Sukuna tries to hammer-fist his opponent back to the ground, but Nue appears in time to defend Megumi with its wing. Megumi knows he's outmatched due to Sukuna's insane physical strength and speed.
Nue and Megumi crash into the side of the detention center. Megumi returns Nue before it succumbs to injury and Sukuna quickly catches up to him. Sukuna says that Megumi's shikigami uses shadows as a medium and asks why he ran away from the other special grade. Sukuna claims Megumi missed an opportunity and says he'll never put Yuji's heart back at this rate.
Megumi recalls his late sister Tsumiki and how she was taken unfairly from this world. Sukuna claims Yuji isn't worth saving and Megumi is forced to remember why he saved Yuji originally. Megumi believes that the world is unfair and it's his job as a jujutsu sorcerer to save people regardless of fairness. Megumi's cursed energy swells and Sukuna believes his opponent is finally ready to go all out.
Megumi tells Yuji that he didn't save him because it was the right thing to do. He did it out of selfishness to help someone else avoid death even if it came back to bite him. Megumi believes this is okay because he's not a hero, he's a jujutsu sorcerer. Rather than forging his next attack, Megumi tells Yuji that he never regretted saving him. [3]
Sukuna vs. Jogo
During a confrontation between sorcerers in the middle of Shibuya, they all notice a large explosion nearby. A part of a building suddenly goes up in flames and Jogo crashes through it, falling through the air as he's injured from the start of his battle. Sukuna follows close behind, jumping off the debris and loudly asks the cursed spirit if that's all he's got.[3]
Jogo answers that he's not done yet and creates a fireball to counterattack. However, Jogo's arms are suddenly diced apart by Sukuna's cursed technique, ruining his technique. Sukuna then gets behind Jogo and smashes his head in with a powerful two-handed hammerfist that sends the cursed spirit crashing down toward the ground. Sukuna follows up with insane speed, diving through the air to grab Jogo's face before he hits the ground, and slams the cursed spirit's head into the roof of a building.
The reinforced impact crashes Jogo and Sukuna through several stories of the building until the former is smashed violently into the ground. As moonlight peers through the destruction. Sukuna notes that it makes it easier to see how pathetic his opponent is. On his knees with his jaw severed and limbs missing, Jogo desperately heals while admitting to himself that he's nowhere close to Sukuna's level of strength.
Sukuna grabs Jogo's scarf and tells him to keep fighting, promising to keep him company until it's over. The openings in the building abruptly explode with incredible firepower. Sukuna escapes the building and Jogo follows him with his most powerful technique activated; Maximum: Meteor! Jogo throws a giant flaming meteor at Sukuna that decimates the entire area of Shibuya. He believes even Sukuna must have suffered some damage from his maximum technique.
Unharmed, Sukuna appears next to Jogo, sitting on the smoldering meteor. He taunts his opponent by saying that the maximum technique would have hurt... if it hit. He also asks why Jogo why he won't use Domain Expansion. Jogo admits he would lose in a battle of domains and Sukuna knows that this lack of confidence is because of his loss to Satoru Gojo.
Entertained, Sukuna stands back up and says he'll fight using Jogo's specialty. He commands "■" to open and activates a mysterious ability that allows him to manipulate flames, surprising Jogo. Sukuna realizes a cursed spirit wouldn't know about this ability and tells his opponent to get ready for a fire-power battle.[4]
Both fighters stand across from each other with their condensed flames. Sukuna creates fire between his closed palms and spreads his hands to extend and form the flame into an arrow. At the same time, Jogo condenses his flames into a small fireball. Sukuna takes the flaming arrow between his fingers, ready to shoot while Jogo takes aim as well. A flaming exchange ensues and Sukuna is the winner, burning Jogo's body into ash.[5]
Sukuna vs. Mahoraga
The shikigami begins the battle by attacking Sukuna with the blade attached to its wrist. It slashes the sword down at Sukuna, and he blocks it with his forearm. The impact cracks the street beneath Sukuna's feet and creates a shockwave that blasts Shigemo back. Sukuna notices something other than cursed energy emanating from the blade and avoids it by flipping out of the way as the weapon crashes into the ground. While upside-down in midair, Sukuna delivers several rapid-fire left straight punches to his opponent's chin. Before he lands, Sukuna finishes his combination by slashing the shikigami's body with his Dismantle technique.
With its body sliced with numerous deep gashes from Sukuna's attack, Mahoraga momentarily falls down on one knee. Sukuna recognizes the shikigami's weapon as the Sword of Extermination, an infamous cursed tool used by cursed spirits that emits positive energy. He even admits that it would make short work of any normal cursed spirit.
The eight-handled wheel on Mahoraga's head turns clockwise, and suddenly all its injuries are healed. Sukuna notices this and immediately attacks with another slash. Mahoraga deflects it with the Sword of Extermination this time, surprising Sukuna, taking note that the shikigami can see the technique now.
Mahoraga loads up for another heavy swing and Sukuna puts his guard up. This time, Mahoraga breaks clean through Sukuna's block and sends him crashing through numerous buildings across Shibuya. The last place he crashes into is an office building that Mahoraga follows him into with blazing speed. Instantly after admitting Mahoraga's attack wasn't bad, the Sword of Execution nearly stabs Sukuna through the face.
Sukuna acrobatically flips out of the way to avoid getting hit. He carries his momentum into a spinning kick that snaps Mahoraga's head back. Sukuna mounts the shikigami's arm before placing it on his target's face and charging it with cursed energy. Declaring its his turn, Sukuna unleashes a massive slash that cuts the entire building in half diagonally. Sliced vertically down its body, Mahoraga is sent crashing out of the collapsing structure by the technique. While Mahoraga is still reeling in midair, Sukuna capitalizes, following up with a powerful axe-kick that sends his opponent crashing several hundred meters into the ground.
Believing he's properly deduced Mahoraga's technique, Sukuna predicts it will stand up and heal again shortly. Right on que, Mahoraga's wheel turns and all of its injuries disappear. Sukuna compares its ability to Yamata-no-Orochi. While its first attack used positive energy, it adapted the second strike with infused cursed energy that broke Sukuna's guard. Additionally, Mahoraga was able to recognize and deflect Dismantle. Both of these advancements occurred after the eight-handled wheel rotated the first time.
Furu's Incantation of the Ten Sacred Treasures and that wheel represent a complete cycle and harmony. Mahoraga's technique is the ability to adapt to any and all phenomena. Sukuna compares it to a late throw in rock-paper-scissors. He admits that if Megumi had unleashed Mahoraga as originally intended during their fight when they first met, it probably would have defeated him. Amused, Sukuna thanks Megumi for showing him the way and activates his Domain Expansion: Malevolent Shrine![3]
Sukuna customizes Malevolent Shrine with a Binding Vow that allows an escape route out of its effective range. As a result, the pact also increases the maximum radius of Sukuna's domain to two hundred meters as a result. In order to avoid hitting Megumi, Sukuna narrows that down to about one-hundred and forty meters.
Until the technique is deactivated, Malevolent Shrine relentlessly attacks anything in range. It cuts down anything with cursed energy using Cleave and hits all inanimate objects with Dismantle. This results in massive devastation on a city-wide scale. It not only decimates Mahoraga with an endless barrage of slashing attacks but over a hundred-meter radius of Shibuya as well. This takes the lives of numerous civilians who were thought to be saved and leaves the entire area of land around Sukuna completely barren.
Mahoraga is severely injured by this but survives the ordeal. Sukuna knows the only way to beat Mahoraga is to slaughter it with a different technique before it can adapt. He believes the shikigami has not only adapted to dismantle, but to slashing techniques in general. In order to finish the fight, Sukuna decides to unleash the pyrokinetic ability he used to defeat Jogo. He fires an immensely powerful fire arrow at Mahoraga before it can regenerate, creating a giant explosive pillar of fire from the impact that completely annihilates the shikigami.[4]
Yuji Itadori, Maki Zenin & Hana Kurusu vs. Sukuna
Yuji calls out his friend's name with a look of desperation and Sukuna responds with a powerful gut punch that sends him flying off the rooftop clean through a skyscraper. Yuji crashes through the tops of several other buildings before eventually stops and lays incapacitated. Maki and Fumihiko Takaba notice the commotion nearby and head toward it. Sukuna sees them coming and summons Nue, appearing widely different from Megumi's shadow. Nue fires haphazard bolts of electricity down to the ground from the top of a tall building at Maki and Takaba.
At the same time, Hana surprise attacks Sukuna from above, hitting him with the all-purifying light of the Angel's cursed technique. Hana doesn't want to hurt Megumi, but the Angel is willing to take the risk of purging Sukuna before he achieves a stronger hold. She casts a much grander light down from the sky, activating Jacob's Ladder at maximum cursed energy output. This conjures a magic circle array in the sky that creates a massive pillar of light that descends down upon Sukuna. Bathed in its radiance, Sukuna's cursed energy is poured vigorously out of his vessel.
Hana keeps up the pressure after the technique finishes with more cross-shape projectiles that stab into Sukuna's back as he falls. Hana desperately cries for Sukuna to return Megumi to her when suddenly his personality changes. "Megumi" claims to remember Hana and asks her to embrace him. Hana succumbs to her emotions and goes to him against numerous warnings from the Angel. Hana hugs Megumi and prepares to confess her feelings when his head suddenly grows to monstrous proportions and bites her arm off.[2][3] Sukuna calls Hana a foolish human and throws her through a railing and off the side of the building.
Yuji, who has regained consciousness, watches Hana plummet to the ground. He jumps onto a rooftop closer to Sukuna's location and gets his attention. Then Yuji leaps right at Sukuna while screaming his name with intense rage. Their clash breaks the building apart and they both crash to the ground. Yuji kicks a large piece of the building at Sukuna, surprising him with an increased level of superhuman strength. The mass of the debris sends Sukuna back and Yuji circles around with a metal street sign to strike him from behind. Sukuna avoids the attack and Yuji angrily demands to know why curses like him always have to spread misery.
Sukuna cuts Yuji across the shoulder with Dismantle and the injury forces him to the ground. Sukuna asks why people who are so weak desperately cling to life when they should accept whatever suffering it gives them. Enraged, Yuji challenges Sukuna to accept his suffering and walks toward him. Sukuna riddles Yuji with numerous slashes that cut him all over his body. However, to Sukuna's surprise, every single cut is shallow. He can't believe Yuji is that tough and realizes that his low cursed energy output is the cause. Yuji walks through all the slashes and punches Sukuna across the face with a powerful right hook.[4]
Sukuna curses Megumi for interfering, as the vessel is fighting back from within. Sukuna doesn't reel for very long from the hit and casually takes a moment to focus on examining himself. He still possesses control over the flesh, but Megumi is suppressing his cursed energy to as much as a tenth of its usual output. Sukuna remains confident he can slaughter Yuji regardless but Maki surprises him when she suddenly arrives on the scene. He's impressed Nue's attack didn't have any effect on Maki. She asks to be brought up to speed and Yuji simply tells her to kill Sukuna because he won't die.
The trio of fighters leap into action and engage each other at high speeds. Sukuna deflects and parries simultaneous attacks from Maki and Yuji on each side of him. He deflects a kick from Maki his left hand and punches Yuji in the face with his right. Then Sukuna throws a right jab at Maki, but she catches it, twists his arm, and pulls Sukuna's face into two quick strikes. She finishes her combination of attacks with a two-handed palm strike that sends Sukuna flying through a railing. Yuji wraps the railing around Sukuna and Maki kicks him into a wall with enough force to collapse it.
As Sukuna gets back up virtually unharmed, Maki wonders if he can heal from wounds from the Split Soul Katana. She gets assurance from Yuji that their goal is to stop Sukuna even if it means killing him and then tells him that things are going to speed up from this point on. The trio re-engages at even faster speeds around the abandoned streets of Tokyo. Yuji throws a feint that gets Sukuna off balance and then Maki grabs Yuji and swings him into Sukuna. While being swung through the air, Yuji lands a strong right straight to Sukuna's ribs. Yuji and Maki follow up with rapid-fire punches, but Sukuna continues to parry and deflect them all.
Yuji throws a kick from one side and Maki throws an uppercut from the other. Sukuna drops down and places his hand on the ground at the same time as their attacks. He believes Megumi's interference is at its greatest when cursed techniques are targetting his allies. In order to circumvent this, Sukuna uses Cleave: Spiderweb on the ground to destroy his opponent's footing. This throws Maki and Yuji off balance the street collapses beneath them. Sukuna capitalizes by landing a powerful right hook to Maki's face, but she quickly shakes it off, entertaining the King of Curses. The sorcerers continue to dash and fight across the battlefield until both sides stop.
Sukuna notices someone else has arrived, quickly followed by Yuji and Maki turning to notice them as well. Uraume attacks with Ice Formation: Frost Calm at maximum cursed energy output. They freeze the entire area in front of Sukuna with a massive wave of ice.[5]
Sukuna vs. Ryu Ishigori
Ryu attempts to engage in hand-to-hand combat with a quick jab to Sukuna's face. However, Ryu is slashed diagonally across his torso by Sukuna's innate technique. This sends Ryu sliding back before he got anywhere close to landing a hit. Amused, Sukuna reveals that he meant to fillet Ryu into three pieces. He commends Ryu for surviving, apologizes for underestimating him, and says he won't hold back anymore.
Still nervous and uneasy, Ryu remains completely silent as more sweat pours down his face. He attempts to dash backward to gain some distance from his opponent to charge up Granite Blast. Suddenly, Sukuna completely blitzes Ryu, passing right by him with immense speed. Sukuna dissects Ryu's head into three pieces, effortlessly killing him in a second.[2]
Sukuna vs. Yorozu
Provoked by Sukuna's taunt, Yorozu sends two large streams of liquid metal at him. Sukuna jumps above them to avoid the attack and Yorozu rides atop one of the streams in pursuit. She jumps off and engages Sukuna in hand-to-hand combat, throwing several attacks including kicks that are all parried away. Sukuna sends Yorozu back with a front kick but she defends herself from the impact by conjuring a square-shaped sheet metal. During a brief break in the action, Yorozu establishes a binding vow with a reluctant Sukuna they'll get married if she wins.
Sukuna summons Divine Dogs without fully manifesting them. Instead, he keeps the shikigami bound to his shadow in a fluid form to increase their attack range without risking complete destruction. Yorozu counters by blasting the shadows apart with her liquid metal. Sukuna follows up with Divine Dog: Totality, which is also still bound to his shadow. It strikes the ground with enough force to break it but Yorozu avoids the attack by jumping back. Sukuna pursues her but she quickly turns around and tries to trap him in a spiked cage of liquid metal. Sukuna avoids it by jumping high into the air but Yorozu reuses the metal by sending two arrow-tipped streams at him. Before they connect, Yorozu manually disengages the attack and asks what innate technique her beloved is using.
Yorozu is deeply insulted that Sukuna won't use his Shrine technique to the point she throws a tantrum. Sukuna is intent on only using the Ten Shadows Technique because he wants to figuratively stain Megumi's hands with the blood of his sister. Irate, Yorozu asks if Sukuna believes he can win without using his Shrine technique and constructs an insect's carapace to cover her body. Yorozu's signature insect armor is the pinnacle of her innate technique. It was developed from countless battles during the Heian Era as the most efficient possible creation. She can still manipulate liquid metal using autonomous cursed energy while clad in the insect armor. Using this fighting style, Yorozu defeated the Five Empty Generals of the Toh and was accepted into the Fujiwara clan. In response, Sukuna conjures Mahoraga's wheel above his head and states it is the perfect time for a test drive.[3]
Clad in her signature insect armor, Yorozu uses her increased speed and strength to land consecutive punches across Sukuna's face. She hits Sukuna with a powerful cross that sends him flying back and then circles behind him by flying with her wings. Sukuna tries to block her off by summoning more Divine Dogs from his shadow but Yorozu not only destroys the shadows but gets behind Sukuna again. She delivers a powerful roundhouse kick that sends him crashing through a wall beneath the stands of the stadium. Yorozu continues to pursue him and attempts to skewer him with numerous liquid metal spikes from all sides. Sukuna counts by summoning Round Deer, a shikigami that can output positive energy with reverse cursed technique. It dispels the cursed energy flowing through the liquid metal and heals Sukuna at the same time. The Ten Shadows Technique user follows up by summoning Piercing Ox, which rams into Yorozu with incredible force.
Yorozu grabs the bull by the horns and throws it back toward the center of the stadium. Piercing Ox quickly recovers and Yorozu attempts to strike it down with a reinforced punch. However, it deals next to no damage and Piercing Ox comes right back at her. It rams back into Yorozu again, cracking the armor over her left eye. She realizes that while Piercing Ox can only move in a straight line, its attacks are stronger with a longer charge. Sukuna uses Rabbit Escape to surround Yorozu and obstruct her view. He leaps high into the air and drops Max Elephant right on top of her while she's distracted. The impact generates such a large shockwave that it shakes the entire arena.
The insect armor is destroyed and Sukuna finds Yorozu fallen to her knees from the damage. Unimpressed, he asks if this is all Yorozu's love amounts to. Despite this, Yorozu remains confident she can still teach Sukuna about love. He responds with a smirk that implies that he's already been taught about it but Yorozu rejects this idea immediately. Determined to show Sukuna true love, she promises to construct her heart for him.[4] This takes the form of True Sphere, a large orb made of liquid metal with no contact area, creating infinite pressure along the surface. As the sphere slowly moves forward, the ground along its path is completely erased. To ensure that True Sphere hits, Yorozu expands her domain: Threefold Affliction.
Sukuna doesn't respond by opening his domain, confusing Yorozu. Instead, the wheel on his head turns, signifying that he's adapted to her technique. Sukuna drops the wheel into his shadow and switches places with Mahoraga. Having already adapted, the Divine General easily tears the True Sphere apart with the Sword of Extermination and then strikes down Yorozu, dispelling her domain and defeating her.[5]

Sukuna is based on the same-named figure from Japanese mythology: Ryomen-Sukuna (両りょう面めん宿すく儺な?). He is a demonic/specter-like figure described in the Nihon Shoki (日に本ほん書しょ紀き Nihon Shoki?), said to have appeared in the Hida Province (today's Gifu Prefecture (岐ぎ阜ふ県けん Gifu Ken?) in ancient times, during the reign of "Emperor Nintoku" (仁にん德とく天てん皇のう Nintoku Tennō?) in the 4th century. He was described as a man of inhuman strength, with a two-faced head plus a total of eight limbs, four arms and legs respectively, that served each face. Wielding a multitude of weapons in his many hands (incl. a bow, arrow, and sword), he terrorized village after village in ancient Hida, plundering and leaving chaos in his wake. That is, until a brave military commander dispatched by the Imperial Court, named Takefurukuma no Mikoto (建たけ振ふる熊くまの命みこと?), stepped forth and put an end to the monster's tyranny, expelling him from Hida. Ryomen-Sukuna was worshipped by some as a minor deity, and statues depicting his distinctly two-faced head can still be found today in Gifu temples and shrines. One theory states that Ryomen-Sukuna is a symbol of twins and brothers, therefore it refers to Ōusu no Mikoto (大おお碓うすの命みこと?) and Ousu no Mikoto (小お碓うすの命みこと?) (i.e. Yamato Takeru no Mikoto and his brother), twins in ancient Japanese history. Another theory states that Ryomen-sukuna refers to Emperor Chuai's (仲ちゅう哀あい天てん皇のう Chūai Tennō?) sons, Kagosaka no Miko (麛かご坂さかの皇み子こ?) and Oshikuma no Miko (忍おし熊くまの皇み子こ?). Both pairs of brothers are deeply related to Mino and Hida Provinces. Takeuchi-monjo (竹たけ内うち文もん書じょ?) (an ancient text which recorded the lineage of ancient kami and a dynasty preceding Emperor Jinmu) wrote Hida Province as ("日ひ玉たま國くに" or "日ひ靈たま國くに" Hitamakuni?), indicating that Hida was Takamanohara (高たか天まの原はら?) and Kuraiyama Mountain was the Pyramid. It is considered that Ryomen-sukuna had a Hida-based dynasty the same size as the Yamato Dynasty. Sukuna's kimono is very loose akin to a ladies kimono, as such space granted him more comfort while having four arms in the past. Sukuna's rankings in the Popularity Polls are as follows; Sukuna ranked 10th in the first Popularity Poll with 5,860 votes. Sukuna ranked 13th in the second Popularity Poll with 1,977 votes. Sukuna ranked 12th in the third Popularity Poll with 1,202 votes. Sukuna's technique names appear to have some relation with cooking. His Domain Expansion, 伏ふく魔ま御み厨づ子し (Fukuma Mizushi?), has been translated officially as "Malevolent Shrine", but 伏ふく魔ま (Fukuma?) is more literally translated as "place where demons hide" and 御み厨づ子し (Mizushi?) is an archaic word referring to a kitchen or the emperor's eating area. His cutting techniques 解カイ (Kai?) and 捌ハチ (Hachi?) also use kanji used in cooking to refer to "dismantling" and "filleting" fish. According to Jujutsu Kaisen Official Fanbook: His hobby is eating. He dislikes nothing in particular (he doesn't care about anything other than himself). In the official fan book Q&A with Gege Akutami, the author stated Sukuna's fingers taste like soap. Sukuna was a curse user, but Gege thinks he is something closely similar to a natural disaster. He possesses the memories of when he was a human. Sukuna can't be compared to Gojo in terms of fear. But it's not necessarily like that, a long time ago (during Sukuna's time), curse users and cursed spirits alike ran rampant more than in the present time. They gradually calmed down but when Gojo burst into life, the excitement raised again. When he was still a human, his surroundings were scared to death. He was known as the "King of Curses" even before he became a cursed object. When Yuji died, Sukuna felt no impact. It was still within the range where Sukuna's reverse cursed technique could revive him. However, if time passed beyond that range, Sukuna would also die. Cursed spirits are not enough to be his vessel so his consciousness does not emerge in Finger Bearers. If his fingers are sealed or taken in by cursed spirits, he can’t gather information from them. He can understand/get some information if the finger is near. If the finger is freed from the seal, he somehow can understand the situation in its surrounding. That's why he said "that's good" during Fushiguro's fight under the Yasohachi bridge. In his previous life, Sukuna did not have a wife or children. He had Uraume, who was his subordinate. For common understanding of his technique, if anyone were to search through the literature, they would understand that there’s slashing involved to a certain degree. However, the fire-based powers are rather unknown. When Gojo has said that Yuji can be a radar for Sukuna’s finger, it was a wrong prediction that Sukuna will act like upon it to take back his power. He was not considered to appear in Jujutsu Kaisen 0: Jujutsu High. In the region where Ryomen Sukuna originated, he was not treated as a hero nor did he have anything named after him. The Sukuna of "Jujutsu Kaisen" is named as such because his appearance and strength are like that of Ryōmen-sukuna. Sukuna has won the award for "Best Antagonist" in the Crunchyroll Anime Awards 2021. The mononym is comprised of the Go-on readings for "lodging, inn" (宿, suku) and "exorcism" (儺, na). The title "Ryomen" means "two faces".
