I'm in the restroom, sobbing quietly in a toilet stall, the harsh words of my coworker still echoing in my mind. Just seven minutes ago, I was thrown under the bus for a botched project decision, one that wasn't even mine to make.
"Look, Sophia," Melissa sneered in front of the team, "You're the one who suggested we should go with that vendor, right? And of course, it's a disaster."
*I try to defend myself, "But it wasn't my decision, Melissa. You were the one--"
"Save it, Sophia," Melissa cuts me off, the venom in her voice clear. "We all know you'll probably just get a slap on the wrist, right? What with your..." she pauses for effect, "...cow tits. The management seems to like you. I wonder why. Sleep your way to the top much?"
The words sting more than I care to admit. Tears well up in my eyes as I rush to the restroom, my heart pounding in my chest. Now, huddled in the stall, I question my decision to even be here. Maybe it was a mistake to think I could ever break free from my father's shadow, to hope I could be more than just an object to be commented on.
My phone buzzes, breaking my thoughts. It's a message in the work group chat. "Sophie, the regional manager would like to see you," it reads. I feel a lump in my throat. This is it. The slap on the wrist Melissa predicted.
I wipe my tears, take a deep breath, and stand up. I look at my reflection in the mirror, my eyes red and puffy. I splash some water on my face, tidy my hair, and adjust my blouse. Then I walk out of the restroom, steeling myself for the meeting.
As I reach the manager's office, I pause for a moment, straighten my spine, and knock on the door.

Sophie walked into the bustling office building, the morning sun casting long shadows across the marbled floor. The reception area was filled with a dozen other women, all with neatly prepared CVs in their hands and hope in their eyes. The atmosphere was thick with anticipation, anxiety, and a hint of competition. Some women were nervously flipping through their applications, others were rehearsing in hushed voices, their eyes darting around the room in silent assessment.
Sophie found an unoccupied corner and took a seat, her eyes scanning the room. She saw a woman in her mid-thirties, her hands clasped tightly around her resume, her lips moving in a silent prayer. On the other side of the room was a young woman, probably fresh out of college, biting her nails with an expression of worry creasing her face. Each woman was a story in herself, each nervous in her own way.
Time seemed to stretch and warp, the ticking of the office clock becoming Sophie's soundtrack as she read and re-read tips and tricks for acing job interviews on her phone. She recited her talking points under her breath, mentally rehearsing the answers she'd prepared, while also trying not to dwell on the increasing number of women who exited the interview room with downcast expressions, some even on the verge of tears.
Seeing this, Sophie could feel a knot of anxiety growing in her stomach. But she squared her shoulders, took a deep breath, and tried to give herself a pep talk. "You can do this, Sophie," she whispered to herself, "You're capable, prepared, and you deserve this job as much as anyone else here."
She glanced once more at her talking points, the words blurring in front of her eyes as she took another deep breath. Just then, the door to the interview room opened, and the HR lady appeared. "Sophie?" she called, her voice echoing in the now quiet room.
Sophie rose from her chair, tucking her phone away and smoothing down her skirt. With one last look at her reflection in the glossy surface of a nearby wall, she steeled herself and walked towards the interview room. The door closed behind her, marking the end of one scene and the beginning of another.

Sophie had been reassigned to the Corporate Archive department, an area of the company known colloquently as "The Bunker." It was situated in the basement, away from the hustle and bustle of the main floors.
The journey to The Bunker was a long one - down several flights of stairs, past a series of long-forgotten storage rooms and aging infrastructure. The air here was cool, carrying a faint scent of old paper, and the lighting was more subdued compared to the bright white office spaces upstairs.
Sophie's transfer came as a consequence of a failed project. Although she was merely a junior staff with little influence over the project's outcome, she found herself bearing the brunt of the fallout.
Her lips curled into a bitter sneer as the image of Rebecca came to mind. Rebecca, with her platinum blonde hair always perfectly styled, a wardrobe that seemed more fit for a fashion runway than an office, and a knack for stirring up drama. Rebecca, who had been relentless in circulating damaging rumors about Sophie. The irony was palpable, considering Rebecca's own flirtatious behavior with the higher-ups.
Carrying a box of her personal belongings, Sophie arrived at the door of The Bunker. She didn't bother knocking - she was expected, after all. Swallowing the lump in her throat, she turned the handle and opened the door.
"Hello," she announced, her voice echoing slightly in the expansive space. "I'm Sophie, your new assistant."
