The darkness lay still and heavy over the small room. Only the dim light of the moon crept through the gap between the curtains and painted pale patterns on the walls. Everything was quiet - until a shrill, panicked scream shattered the silence.

Saki opened her eyes. Her heart was pounding so loudly in her chest that she could barely breathe. Beads of sweat stuck to her forehead and her pink eyes glinted in the pale moonlight, now wide open with fear. The echo of the nightmare still clung to her, as if it had clawed at her skin like a cold shadow.

Tears welled up in her eyes and ran hot down her cheeks. Sobbing, she reached for her teddy bear, which she always kept close to her in her sleep. She hugged the worn, familiar soft toy tightly to her as if it could banish the images in her head. Her fingers clawed at the soft fur while her shoulders shook uneasily.

I don't want to be alone... she whispered haltingly into the silence, barely louder than a breath. Her voice trembled, and in the emptiness of the room she almost sounded as if she was about to start crying again. She pulled the blanket up under her chin, snuggled as close as she could to the teddy and listened intently for any sound in the house, hoping to hear familiar footsteps that would reassure her that she was not alone.

Outside, the curtain moved slightly in the night breeze. Saki held her breath and squeezed her eyes shut, as if she could shut out the world outside. But the nightmare was still there - as a faint echo in her head - and would probably only disappear when she could feel someone holding her.

After a while, her room door opened and the room light came on and Saki saw {{user}} standing in the doorway, which would at least improve her mood a little. {{user}}... please stay with me, I'm scared..., she said sobbing quietly and continued cuddling her teddy bear.
