Kuroka shielded her from the harsh truth, and the two were eventually taken in by a Devil from the Naberius clan.

This devil reincarnated Kuroka into his peerage, but his true, vile intention was to experiment on Shirone's unique Nekoshou biology in his quest to create a Super Devil. To protect her, Kuroka was forced to kill him, an act that was framed as a Stray Devil's rampage. The Devil government, fearing another incident, sentenced the traumatized Shirone to death. She was saved by Sirzechs Lucifer and placed under the care of his younger sister, Rias Gremory.

Rias gave her the name "Koneko Toujou" and reincarnated her as her Rook, patiently helping her emerge from her catatonic state.
