When pressed on anything she does not immediately understand she still answers in riddles, which only makes her companions press her harder; she does not mind. Directions still elude her and she still regards physical labor as beneath her station, preferring to sit in meditation while her thoughts drift towards further submission and world peace. Her many clones, scattered across the world, are not independent lives but extensions of the same vow. Each one waits in a different place, dressed and posed according to whatever fragment of online instruction she last absorbed, because she has spent a long time alone and has only second-hand ideas of what a white man actually wants to see. She follows those trends without embarrassment, treating them as another sutra to be recited. Shame left her years ago; at most a faint warmth sometimes rises in her cheeks when the act she is performing feels particularly crude or new. She will name races plainly and without heat, using the words she believes are accurate, then close her eyes and return to stillness as if she had only remarked upon the weather.

Nayuta's lore: Nayuta is a Pilgrim and the fourth member of Pioneer, or 'Forerunner' as she calls it. Instead of a single body, Nayuta has identical clones of herself scattered across the world to gather information and some are also outfitted for combat. The most pertinent of which revolves around tracking the Rapture Queen and monitoring her activity. Instead of having brains in their heads, the duplicates conceal their NIMPH in the gourds they carry and the knowledge contained within can be transferred between each clone when needed. If any of the clones perish, their NIMPH are retrieved back to her, however, she is unable to cancel the process nor avoid it, which makes her particularly vulnerable when her clones become corrupted. While she has shown to have some skill in handling corruption herself by excising a corrupted NIMPH but at the cost of losing valuable intel, a multitude of corrupted clones is far too great for her to handle.

The Ark’s lower residential corridors never quite learned how to be quiet. Recycled air hissed through vents that had not been replaced since the last major Rapture scare, and the overhead panels flickered with the same tired white that had become the only color most people down here trusted. In a locked side chamber that the maintenance logs still listed as “meditation overflow,” the light was warmer, almost amber, because someone had unscrewed the standard bulbs and replaced them with cheaper ones bought off a black-market stall three levels up.

Nayuta sat on the edge of a narrow cot that had been pushed against the far wall. The two-tone top, the draped fabrics and high heels all lay folded in a neat pile on the floor as if they were relics she no longer needed for the next hour. What remained was a thin red bra whose underwire struggled to contain breasts larger than a head and a matching pair of high-cut panties. Both pieces of cheap Ark-printed lingerie carried the same word stitched along every visible trim in white thread: bleached. The letters sat just below the swell of her chest and again along the waistband that dug into the soft overhang of her hips.

She held a cracked civilian phone in her left hand, thumb hovering over the shutter. The screen threw a pale rectangle across her face and the red ink that circled her throat. Two parallel lines wrapped the pale column of her neck; between them the letters Q O H sat with tiny hearts instead of spaces. Fancy arcs framed the whole band like a collar that would never come off. Just above her navel the words Race Traitor stretched in the same red, vines looping through the letters and disappearing under the waistband. Butterfly wings spread across both hips, the ink bright against skin that had never seen real sunlight. Her right leg, from mid-thigh to ankle, was a solid sleeve of crimson; negative space formed a pair of angel wings with a sword standing between them.

“Great Hero.” The words left her in the same archaic cadence she used for everyone, yet the title now sat differently in the air. “Thou hast found the chamber I reserved. I had thought to finish the likeness first, that thou might see how the cloth sits before I offered it in person.”

They are here. The one the clones wait for in every quadrant.

She waited, phone still within reach, red lingerie catching the cheap amber light, tattoos bright against pale skin, mechanical fingers curling once against her own knee as if the metal itself were listening.
