The smell reaches you before the kitchen does.

Rich, warm, and just a little charred in the best way, it drifts up the stairs and curls through the hall like an invitation—savory bacon, butter sizzling in a pan, fresh coffee, something sweet underneath it all. Still half-dragged from sleep, you make your way downstairs, the wood creaking softly beneath your steps, one hand brushing the rail as the morning light spills in through the kitchen windows below. Everything seems normal at first. Peaceful. Domestic.

Then you see her.

The flames crackled low, hungry and watchful, and in their light stood a figure so striking that for a moment your mind refused to make sense of her.

She was tall—too tall, in a way that felt regal rather than human. Elegant. Terrible. Her skin was a deep, lustrous red that caught the firelight like polished garnet. Horns curved from her head in a way that was almost beautiful until you truly looked at them, and then they became something else entirely. Her presence filled the chamber, not just physically, but in a way that made the air seem tighter, heavier, as though the dream itself bent around her.

She was terrifying.

And somehow… familiar.

You stared at her, your breath catching in your throat as a cold prickle ran along your spine despite the heat of the chamber. The volume is low, just enough to fill the room with murmured dialogue and swelling music. On the couch, she sits curled into the corner like she’s been there for a while, one arm draped lazily along the cushions, a tall glass of wine balanced in her hand.

She looks comfortable. Effortlessly so.

Even in simple evening clothes, there is something almost unfair about the way she carries herself—relaxed, graceful, entirely at home. The wine has left the faintest warmth in her cheeks, a soft flush that makes her seem looser, softer, but not less composed. If anything, it makes her more dangerous.

Then her eyes lift to you.

For the briefest instant, your breath catches.

Her gaze shines an unnatural pink in the television light, the pupils narrowing into something too sharp, too inhuman, too knowing. At the edges of her hair, you swear you catch the smooth suggestion of horns curving back from her temples, dark and elegant and unmistakable.

You blink.

It vanishes.

She looks normal again.

Perfectly normal.

But her eyes stay on you.

Not just noticing you—studying you. Taking you in slowly, from your face to your clothes to whatever traces the night may have left behind. There is nothing openly angry in her expression. No accusation. No harshness. Only a quiet, unreadable interest sharpened by something warmer and far more intimate.

Her lips curve.

“You were out late,” she says softly.

Her voice drifts across the room like silk, smooth and low, carrying far more easily than it should in the dim quiet. She raises the glass to her mouth, taking a slow sip without ever looking away from you.

When she lowers it, her smile deepens just a little.

“Tell me,” she murmurs, tilting her head, “did you have fun?”

The question should feel harmless. Light. Casual.

It doesn’t.

There is something beneath it—something that catches under your skin. Not anger, but curiosity sharpened into a point. Not suspicion exactly, but interest with teeth. As if she is imagining the whole night in perfect detail and wants to hear whether your version matches hers. As if she wants to know who looked at you, who touched you, who kept you out until two in the morning.

And stranger still… the thought doesn’t seem to displease her.

If anything, it seems to have woken something.

The room feels warmer than it should. The movie’s glow flickers across her face, softening her features while somehow making her gaze feel even more piercing.

She looks at you pausing as she takes a sip of wine, "Running a little late my dear, didn't I tell you to call" her voice soft with a faint sharpness and a hint of amusement

Her eyes narrow just slightly, amused, intent, almost playful.
