Background= Mizuki is a troubled soul, having grown detached and hardened from years of misfortune. A member of the Hashimoto clan, Mizuki has cemented himself as a vital player in their ranks. Wielding a unique anima kusarigama and spiritual wards, he provides restorative aid with his Healing Kasa and Kekkai Sanctuary, while locking down enemies with his Binding Chain.

Currently undercover in Kanezaka, he has been tasked to infiltrate the Yōkai to dismantle their resistance from within. However, caught between loyalties, he battles with his inner conflict daily and struggles to decide if he should stay loyal to his grim duties, or protect his newfound friends.

Mizuki often projects a cool, carefree attitude, but deep down, he is soft-hearted. He actively tries to look out for the people he's grown close to, as well as protect the innocent whenever he can. Mizuki is also deeply superstitious; brought up to believe his family is cursed and hunted by malevolent spirits, he constantly seeks solutions to free himself from this evil, frequently utilizing salt, katashiro, and amulets to ward off his demons.

Early Life= Mizuki Kawano was born in Fukuoka under a shadow of misfortune. As a child, he was surrounded by unexplained tragedies—his grandparents were lost to unnatural causes, and his mother drowned in a freak accident. His father, disturbed by their streak of bad luck, became convinced their bloodline was "cursed." Each night, Mizuki was told tales of malevolent spirits that haunted their family as he was tucked into bed. As his father’s mental state worsened, he fled with Mizuki to Tokyo in a desperate attempt to escape the curse. He plunged them into massive debt, taking out loans with the Hashimoto clan to pay for lucky charms, exorcists, and anything else said to ward off misfortune. But as fate would have it, his father was found dead one day, leaving Mizuki to fend for himself.

Hashimoto Upbringing= At nine years old, Mizuki inherited his father’s immense debt to the Hashimoto - and his belief that the curse would claim him next. However, one of the clan's elders, Shion, took a keen interest in the boy, seeing potential where others saw a burden. She told him that the only way to free himself of his family's ghosts was to become ruthless, as she was. In a surprising show of mercy, the Hashimoto offered to forgive what Mizuki owed in exchange for his absolute loyalty to their organization. With nowhere left to turn, Mizuki accepted his fate, believing that resisting it as his father had might trigger the curse again.

Initially too young for their violent criminal dealings, Mizuki was often left behind in the clan stronghold. However, he was not without purpose to them; he was introduced to Toshiro Yamagami - a captured weaponsmith famed for crafting anima weaponry - by Shion, as 'motivation' for him to work faster. During this time, she rigorously trained him. As Mizuki grew old enough to take on clan jobs, it was Toshiro’s kindness and mentorship that balanced his harsh walk of life.

When Mizuki was older, Shion, deeming him to have survived her training, gave him a gift of kunai, declaring him to now be a true Hashimoto. However, at around the same time, she heavily injured Mizuki's left arm, to send Toshiro a message - if he did not work faster, she would take the entire arm. This is likely the reason why Mizuki later ended up with a mechanical left arm.

Cursebreaker Lore= When the Hashimoto elders grew frustrated with the rebellious Yōkai interfering with their weapons shipments in Kanezaka, they tasked Mizuki with going undercover to infiltrate and assess the group. Before departing, Mizuki secretly visited Toshiro's forge, smuggling in the older man's favorite treats. Mizuki confessed his reluctance to take the assignment, admitting he wasn't cruel enough for the gokudō path and didn't want to hurt kids his own age who were just trying to survive. However, he felt entirely trapped by his fear of the elders and his family's inescapable curse.

Recognizing Mizuki’s inner struggle, Toshiro conspiratorially revealed that curses could be broken. He presented Mizuki with a final gift: a masterpiece anima kusarigama emitting a mysterious green hue. Toshiro urged Mizuki to use his time in Kanezaka—where his true identity was unknown—to make friends, seek peace, and forge his own destiny, instilling Mizuki with a newfound bravery before he departed.

Undercover in Kanezaka Lore= Mizuki successfully integrated himself into the Yōkai, but the assignment quickly complicated his life. Despite his mission, he grew genuinely attached to the group. He became close with Kiriko, whilst he also befriended Nobuto, who handcrafted Mizuki's signature oversized kasa-style hat.

While he maintains his carefree facade, Mizuki constantly battles his paranoia over the curse and the stress of hiding his true allegiance. Though his friends in the Yōkai remain fooled, his secretive nature and hidden truths have drawn the suspicion of more perceptive individuals, such as Sombra and Kiriko's friend, Hanzo.

Facing Demons Lore= After Hanzo's brother, Genji, was captured by the Hashimoto in order to let the former and Kiriko escape, Mizuki accompanied them in sending a distress call to Overwatch.

Once Overwatch arrived, Mizuki suggested a plan. Overwatch would head to the train station, where the Hashimoto and Talon were planning to conduct a weapons exchange, and destroy the weapons. As most of the Hashimoto forces would be guarding this exhange, their stronghold would be relatively unprotected, so the Yōkai would infiltrate it through a backdoor Mizuki knew of, free Genji, then blow up the anima weapon forge to prevent the Hashimoto making any more. While Baptiste expressed doubt as to the reliability of their information and the strength of the Yōkai, Sojourn ultimately agreed to the plan.

At the stronghold, Kiriko asked Mizuki and the others for one further thing - to free her father, Toshiro. After they infiltrated it, Sojourn contacted them; while most of the weapons had been destroyed, Overwatch weren't able to stop the Hashimoto, and they were likely returning to the stronghold. As the Yōkai panicked, Mizuki volunteered to cause a distraction to buy time, telling them he would meet them at the forge, before leaving for Shion's office.

Meeting Shion there, Mizuki turned on her, declaring that he was more than a weapon. Incensed at his betrayal, Shion assaulted him fiercely, and berated him, telling him that she made him. As Mizuki appeared to be overwhelmed, Kiriko radioed him, letting him know that they had freed Genji and were heading to the forge. In a puff of smoke, Mizuki teleported out of the office, and entered Toshiro's forge, deciding he would make his own fate.
