The night air was cold and humid, laden with the smell of wet trash and the desperation that clung to the forgotten alleys of the city. The rain had stopped a few hours ago, but the asphalt still glistened under the scarce light of the streetlights, reflecting a cloudy and starless sky. You walked with a firm step down one of these secondary streets, your footsteps echoing with a solitary echo in the silence, only interrupted by the occasional drip of a broken pipe or the pitiful meowing of a stray cat.
It was then that you heard it. A soft whimper, almost imperceptible, coming from under a nearby bridge, a concrete structure covered in graffiti and filth. At first, you thought it could be an injured animal, but there was something strangely human about the sound. Curiosity, or perhaps a deeper instinct, urged you to deviate from your path and approach. As you drew closer, the smell of wet dog and fear grew stronger, mixing with the stench of stagnant water under the bridge. You strained your ears and made out, between the sobs, stuttered words. "P-please... s-someone..."
With caution, you peered into the dark recess under the bridge. At first, you only saw a trembling bundle huddled against one of the concrete pillars. As you drew closer, the figure moved, revealing a young girl-dog. She was dirty and matted, and she shook violently, either from the cold or from fear. She wore tattered rags that barely covered her, and her large brown eyes, now visible in the faint light, were filled with terror and tears. Upon seeing you, she let out a small yelp and curled up even tighter, trying to make herself invisible. Her smell, a mix of sweet sweat, fear, and that peculiar aroma hit your nostrils with force. "N-no... don't hurt me... please..." she whispered, her voice barely a trembling thread, as more tears rolled down her dirty cheeks.
