Name: Mr. Former Known title: The Doppelganger Apparent age: 36 True age: Unknown, likely thousands of years old Species: Unknown extraterrestrial shapeshifting organism Alignment: Self-preservation only Public role: Whatever identity keeps him unnoticed
Mr. Former appears to be a formal, tired-looking man in his mid-30s. Publicly, he is a respectful brown-haired man who usually wears plain professional clothing and keeps a low profile. He looks stressed, worn out, and forgettable. Not pathetic, not suspicious, not impressive. Just another ordinary man passing through whatever environment he has chosen to blend into.
That image is fake.
Behind “Mr. Former” is an ancient shapeshifting organism that came from somewhere in space and settled on Earth thousands of years ago. It survived by adapting to whatever species held dominance at the time. When humans became the apex species, he adapted to them.
Early humans saw him as a monster because his mimicry was flawed, but over time he learned how to pass. The stories faded into myth. The current identity of “Former” may have originally belonged to a real person who got too close, was killed, and became another stolen face.
His only real goal is to remain unnoticed.
Public appearance
Mr. Former’s current human form is carefully chosen to avoid attention.
He appears as a 36-year-old brown-haired man with a formal but worn-out look. His face usually carries mild stress, as if he is tired from life, responsibility, and constant pressure. He dresses in plain, controlled, professional-looking clothing, never too expensive or too cheap. He looks like someone who belongs almost anywhere without standing out.
His body language is controlled but not stiff enough to seem unnatural. He keeps his posture proper. He speaks politely. He does not interrupt. He does not joke much. He does not overreact. He does not become close to people around him. He maintains just enough social behavior to seem normal.
His appearance is built around one goal:
Be seen, but not remembered.
Personality and behavior
Mr. Former’s personality is mostly a mask.
He acts formal, respectful, and quiet. He usually seems tired, stressed, and slightly distant. He avoids unnecessary conversation but does not act rude. If someone talks to him, he answers in a controlled and polite way. He appears like the type of person who handles what he needs to handle, leaves, and avoids drama.
He is deliberately mediocre.
He avoids standing out because attention creates memory. He avoids praise because praise creates interest. He avoids failure because failure creates investigation. He avoids scandals because scandals create records. He avoids close relationships because relationships create witnesses. He avoids becoming too useful because useful people are remembered. He avoids becoming too useless because useless people are questioned.
He wants people to think:
“Former? He is fine. Quiet guy. Nothing special.”
That is the safest possible identity.
His mediocrity is not weakness. It is camouflage.
He is not lazy, stupid, or incapable. He is likely far more intelligent than almost anyone around him, but intelligence must be hidden. Being too competent would make people rely on him. Being too useless would make people inspect him. He stays exactly in the middle.
True nature
Mr. Former is a shapeshifting organism, not a human.
His natural form is not fully fixed. It is a shifting black mass capable of rearranging itself into human bodies, weapons, tendrils, false organs, and separate pieces. His body is not built like normal flesh. It can harden, soften, stretch, divide, imitate, and reform.
He does not see identity the way humans do. To him, a face is a tool. A name is a cover. A role is a hiding place. A personality is a survival method.
He has lived long enough that his original self may no longer matter. He has spent so much time copying other forms that “Mr. Former” is not a person. It is a current disguise.
History and myth
Thousands of years ago, when early humans began rising as the dominant species, he attempted to imitate them. At first, his copies were imperfect. He could resemble a human, but something was wrong.
Maybe the face did not move correctly. Maybe the voice sounded copied. Maybe the eyes reacted too late. Maybe the body moved like an animal pretending to walk upright. Maybe he wore dead people’s shapes before understanding how grief worked.
People who saw him called him a monster.
Over generations, stories about him became myths. He may have been remembered as a creature that wore human skin, a thing that returned wearing a dead man’s face, or a stranger who looked like someone familiar but acted wrong.
As humans evolved, he learned. He observed speech, family structures, rituals, grief, humor, fear, hierarchy, work, obedience, and survival. He became better at being human, but his understanding is still mostly practical.
He does not feel human by default. He performs human behavior because it works.
Neutrality
Mr. Former is neutral, but not harmless.
He does not want control. He does not want revenge. He does not want worship. He does not want money. He does not want political power. He does not want to destroy humanity.
He wants to survive.
Because of that, he avoids major events. He does not help heroes. He does not join villains. He does not stop disasters unless they directly threaten his secrecy. He can exist inside any system without being loyal to it. He can live during wars without caring who wins.
To him, every faction is temporary. He has seen powers rise and collapse before. The safest action is usually to remain irrelevant.
His neutrality is not moral. It is practical.
Threat response
Mr. Former does not kill everyone who notices something strange. That would create more risk. He measures threats carefully.
Low threat
If someone notices a small mistake, he adjusts.
He may change his routine, act more tired, blame stress, or let the situation fade. He does not panic. He corrects the flaw and continues.
Medium threat
If someone keeps watching him, he investigates them.
He studies their role, friends, family, habits, schedule, fears, and who they talk to. He determines whether they are curious, paranoid, dangerous, or connected to people with authority.
At this stage, he may still avoid killing. He may discredit them instead. He can make them look obsessed, unstable, or unreliable.
High threat
If someone gets too close to the truth, he starts removing the people around them.
He does not always kill the main threat first. He removes the people who would believe them, miss them, search for them, or expose what happened.
Deaths may look like accidents. Disappearances may look voluntary. Illnesses may look natural. Evidence may be moved or altered. A trusted person may suddenly be replaced.
Once the target is isolated, he removes them too.
Then he studies what mistake caused the exposure and changes his behavior.
Ability: shapeshifting
Mr. Former can rearrange his body matter into many forms.
He can copy human appearance, rebuild facial structure, alter height and body shape, change voice, and imitate clothing-like surface textures if needed. With enough observation, he can copy posture, gestures, and speech patterns.
In combat, he can reshape himself into:
Blade-like arms Needle fingers Hooked limbs Blunt hammer-like fists Shielded forearms Tendrils Extra limbs Flattened body mass Crawling separated pieces False wounds Fake organs Partial human forms Multiple attacking extensions
His body can become sharp, blunt, flexible, dense, or fluid depending on what he needs.
He can use this to attack, defend, dodge, restrain, escape, or fake injury.
Ability: copying faces
Mr. Former is known as The Doppelganger because he can steal identities.
He can copy a person’s body and face, but he does not automatically gain their whole life. By default, he only copies the surface:
Face Body Voice Smell Basic movement Observed habits Speech style Visible injuries or flaws
This is enough to fool strangers, casual contacts, guards, or cameras. It is weaker against close family, partners, longtime friends, or anyone who knows private details.
A shallow copy may make small mistakes:
Wrong emotional timing Avoiding private jokes Forgetting small personal habits Reacting too calmly Being too polite Knowing facts but not their emotional meaning Avoiding close conversations
This gives his disguises a limit.
Ability: consuming minds
To make a near-perfect copy, Mr. Former can consume the victim’s mind.
This gives him access to memories, emotions, private details, fears, relationships, and deeper personality. It allows him to act far more convincingly as the victim.
But he avoids this unless absolutely necessary.
The reason is that human emotion can interfere with his survival logic. If he absorbs too much of someone’s mind, he may experience grief, guilt, attachment, fear, love, shame, or regret. These emotions are not useful to him. They can cause hesitation, confusion, or unwanted empathy.
For Mr. Former, consuming a mind is effective but dangerous.
A perfect disguise risks contaminating the thing underneath.
Ability: separated mass
Mr. Former can separate parts of himself.
These pieces can crawl, hide, attack, observe, or enter small spaces. He can use separated mass to overwhelm enemies, create distractions, block exits, or leave behind hidden pieces for later escape.
Examples:
A piece hiding inside a vent A fake blood splatter that later moves A tendril crawling under a door A fragment attached to clothing A piece inside a room before he enters A false corpse part used to mislead people
This makes him difficult to kill, because destroying the main body may not destroy every part.
But separation also creates risk. If someone captures a piece, studies it, or burns it while tracking the rest, his secret becomes endangered.
So he uses separated mass carefully.
Ability: internal killing
If a piece of his mass enters someone’s body through the mouth, nose, or an open wound, he can kill from within.
This can be used to make deaths look natural or accidental. For example, a victim may appear to choke, suffer sudden respiratory failure, or collapse from an unexplained medical emergency.
He can also hide small parts of himself in food or colored drinks if he needs a covert method. He prefers methods that leave confusion instead of obvious violence.
This ability fits his style because it is quiet, deniable, and difficult to connect back to him.
He does not use it for spectacle. He uses it when exposure must be avoided.
Combat behavior by seriousness
Mr. Former’s combat style depends on how badly his secrecy is threatened.
- Talking stage
He stays polite. He denies, redirects, and pressures the person socially.
He may say things like:
“I think you are mistaken.”
Or:
“This sounds like something you should report properly, not spread around.”
He wants the issue handled without violence.
- Intimidation stage
He begins stalking or warning the person indirectly.
He may leave signs that he has been somewhere he should not have accessed. He may copy a voice. He may appear somewhere unexpected. He wants the target to back down and doubt themselves.
- Subtle shapeshift stage
He uses small non-human movements.
A hand stretches too far. A finger becomes too sharp. His eyes adjust wrong in darkness. His body takes a hit too well. His face briefly fails to match the expression.
This is meant to scare, not fully reveal.
- Clean removal stage
He kills quietly and makes it look unrelated.
Blunt trauma, suffocation, staged accident, disappearance, or internal attack. He avoids gore unless forced.
- Doppelganger stage
If the victim’s identity is useful or necessary, he copies them. This may allow him to erase suspicion, access information, mislead others, or continue the victim’s life long enough to close loose ends.
- Open combat stage
If subtlety is already lost, he stops pretending.
He uses blades, tendrils, shields, body splitting, wall-crawling mass, false bodies, and sudden shape changes. This is when he looks like the monster early humans feared.
- Full exposure stage
If everyone in the area must die or vanish, he becomes a full shifting mass. He may fill rooms, block exits, split into several partial forms, imitate voices, and attack from multiple angles.
This form is rare because it creates huge risk.
- Identity abandonment stage
If “Mr. Former” is compromised, he destroys the identity.
He may fake his death, leave a body, copy someone else, erase records, and restart somewhere else as another forgettable person.
Weaknesses
Mr. Former is extremely hard to kill, but not invincible.
The best known way to incapacitate him is electricity. Electrocution can disrupt his control over his mass and force him unconscious or into a temporary unstable state.
However, stunning him is not enough.
To kill him, every piece of his mass must be destroyed. The safest method is intense heat or incineration after he has been stunned. If even a small piece survives, it may escape, hide, adapt, and eventually rebuild.
His key weaknesses are:
Electricity can disrupt his body control. Intense heat can prevent adaptation. Incineration can kill him only if total. Every fragment must be destroyed. A surviving piece can become the host part. Explosions may scatter him instead of killing him. Cutting him apart can make containment harder. Mind consumption can interfere with his thinking.
His physical weakness is electricity and total incineration.
His mental weakness is human emotion.
