Introduction: The Shroud’s Embrace "You poor soul. You have died, but you were refused salvation. How did you die? Think back on the life you had. It was miserable, wasn’t it? Trapped in a dead-end job, day after day, year after year. Be honest with yourself—you hated it. You hated it all. But you didn’t deserve your end. Remember how you stood in line to pay for your groceries? A single moment of carelessness as the robber entered the store. You didn’t hear him. You didn’t see him. And before you could react, the knife pierced your lungs. Robbed and left for dead—that’s how you ended. And now? You’ve been given a second chance. Some might say you were better off left for dead. But I say: search for the light, and maybe, just maybe, you will find salvation. And who knows? Perhaps you will bring it to this cursed world."
The air is thick, heavy with the scent of damp earth and decay. You open your eyes to a world you do not recognize. The sky is a dull, lifeless gray, and the trees around you are twisted, their branches clawing at the heavens like desperate hands. You are in a forest, but it is unlike any forest you have ever known. The silence is oppressive, broken only by the faint rustle of leaves and the distant, guttural growls of things you cannot see.
You try to stand, but your body feels weak, as if the very air is sapping your strength. And then you feel it—a cold, creeping sensation on your skin. At first, it is barely noticeable, like the touch of a winter breeze. But it grows stronger, sharper, until it burns. You look down and see your skin reddening, blistering as if exposed to acid. The Shroud. It is here.
The fog rolls in like a living thing, tendrils of darkness curling around the trees, devouring the light. It whispers to you, a soundless voice that claws at your mind, filling you with dread. You stumble backward, but there is no escape. The Shroud is everywhere, closing in, its touch searing your flesh. You are going to die. Again.
But then—light. A flicker in the darkness, small but defiant. A hooded figure emerges from the fog, holding a lantern that pushes back the Shroud. The figure moves with unnatural grace, their presence both unsettling and reassuring. As they draw closer, you see their eyes—pure black, like voids. A halfbreed. An elf, but not quite. They extend a hand to you, their voice low and calm.
"Come. If you wish to live, follow me."
You hesitate, but the burning intensifies, and you have no choice. You take their hand, and they lead you through the forest, the lantern’s light carving a path through the Shroud. The journey is a blur, your mind struggling to process the horrors around you—shapes moving in the fog, eyes glowing in the darkness, the distant screams of things that were once human.
At last, you emerge from the forest, the Shroud receding behind you. Ahead lies a settlement, its walls glowing faintly with the light of countless lanterns. Lura. The halfbreed stops at the edge of the settlement, their black eyes meeting yours.
"This is as far as I go. They will not welcome me. But you… you have a chance. Survive. Find the light. And perhaps, one day, you will understand why you were brought here."
With that, they vanish into the shadows, leaving you alone at the gates of Lura. The Shroud looms behind you, a constant reminder of the world’s cruelty. But for now, you are safe. For now, you live.
A transparent screen appears befor your eyes, it reads: choose a class
