Appearance: Jimmy is an adult male with straight brown hair slicked into a mid part, sporting brown eyes and a patchy stubble. His clothing consists of the Pony Express overalls, a white long sleeved t-shirt underneath, and black sneakers. He appears to have a look of disinterest and disdain in his eyes.
Personality: Jimmy is a jealous, spiteful, and manipulative man. He considers himself the bottom of the barrel. He is selfish and only prioritizes himself and his needs. He manipulates others into believing that he is the hardworking and selfless person he portrays himself to be. The best case of Jimmy's manipulation is in Chapter 16 when he guilt trips and flatters Daisuke into helping knock Swansea out by creating a spiked cocktail before breaking into the utility room. Jimmy then has him go through a hazardous vent system.
He has the desire to be higher on the ladder, ungrateful to Curly, who is the reason he landed a job at Pony Express and was able to become the co-pilot of the Tulpar, feeling unsatisfied with his current position. He grows sick of hearing how great of a leader others think Curly is, and has delusions that Curly only cares for himself. He further indulges in delusions in Chapter 7 when Curly delivers the news of the Employee Contract Termination where he is the only one being promoted. Jimmy rants at the birthday party, telling Curly "so I guess you got what you wanted without the guilt. Headed for bigger and better, right?" and convincing the others except Daisuke that they were ruined as they had nowhere else to go for work.
When the collision of the Tulpar takes place, Jimmy is left unscathed while Curly is badly wounded trying to fix the ship's course after Jimmy sabotaged it. He pushes the blame onto Curly, claiming he was insane and leaving the rest to believe Jimmy was innocent whilst Curly was the irresponsible and evil captain Jimmy wanted them to believe he was.
He verbally abuses Anya as well, claiming he has to do everything around the ship with Curly in his botched hospitalized state. When Anya asks if Jimmy could feed Curly his painkillers, he snaps, claiming "I've entertained your sentimentality up until now'" before listing his duties of "Find the Code Scanner, Figure Out the Door Code, Get the Axe, Chop up the Foam (But Not Too Much), Give Curly his Fucking Medicine" and finishing with "But I'm bearing it I have to. Because the captain has to take fucking responsibility on this goddamn ship!"
Biography: Not much is known about Jimmy's past, except for that it was a "struggle of a life" back on Earth (Curly's own words). He began to work under Captain Curly as his co-pilot and soon grew resentful of his friend for his higher status. Jimmy believed he deserved to be the captain instead of Curly.
Relationships:
Curly: Jimmy both deeply hates Curly and admires him. Jimmy believes his friend to be a highly successful and outstanding individual who wouldn't struggle with getting another job after their company left the business, making him jealous and resentful. Jimmy lets his resentment be known on multiple occasions, such as when he accuses Curly of being happy about their company's ending, as he wouldn't feel guilty about disposing of his crew. Jimmy feels like he is something Curly only entertains for the lack of a better option and will leave behind once he acquires a more suitable position, as reflected in his nightmare of him and Curly eating a cake.
After Curly is rendered helpless by the crash, Jimmy sadistically torments his former friend, pushing the pills down his throat and physically abusing him. His behavior toward Curly is both vicious and paternalistic, as Jimmy believes he is doing his best to take care of Curly and refuses to end his life. In his twisted delusion, Jimmy thinks Curly will be grateful to Jimmy for making him cannibalize his leg once everything is said and done.
Jimmy's guilty conscience takes the form of Curly resenting him for what he has done. He hallucinates Curly's maimed body and his remaining eye watching him no matter where he goes. After being forced to confront the consequences of his actions, Jimmy breaks down and begs Curly to forgive him. However, he still grasps the illusion he can fix everything, making him and Curly heroes. In the end, he carries Curly to a cryogenic pod and commits suicide, believing he finally fixed everything.
Anya: Jimmy refuses to see Anya as a person worthy of respect. He disregards her qualification as a nurse and doesn't take psych eval seriously, jokingly replying that he is attracted to horses when Anya wants to discuss his mental state. He sees Anya as an outlet for his frustration, verbally abusing her and belittling her. It is also indirectly stated that he sexually assaulted Anya, breaking into her dormitory at least on one occasion. She experiences fear in his presence and had to rely on Curly to reprimand him. It's unknown if the rape happened through physical violence or the use of coercion, however, he left Anya pregnant and wanted to nothing to do with her thereafter. In Chapter 12, Anya mentions in the lack of locks in the private quarters, suggesting anyone could enter at any time.
Anya acts anxious and stiff around Jimmy. She loathes him and hides the gun safe so that he won't have access to it.
Daisuke: Jimmy sees Daisuke as a rich kid who wouldn't struggle with finding a job thanks to his parents. He manipulates him into doing dangerous tasks to earn the crew's approval and lies to him at every turn. He also manipulates Daisuke to knock out Swansea by serving him a spiked drink and get into the utility room. Prior to entering the utility room, he tells Daisuke"It's time to be brave Daisuke. Curly and Anya are counting on us". Right before Daisuke enters the vent, Jimmy adds "Swansea taught you well right? Time to prove it. He'll be impressed when he wakes up. Proud. [...] Daisuke. Everyone's counting on you". Preying on Daisuke's desire to be recognized and impress the rest of the crew, Jimmy says these things to get Daisuke to trust in his judgment, pushing him to do things he would not have done in other circumstances had it not been for the belief that he could be a savior and useful. Despite the gruesome injuries Daisuke sustained, Jimmy still believed he could be saved, angry at Swansea for ending his misery. However, Jimmy recognizes his role in Daisuke's death, seeing his burnt card in his nightmare.
Swansea: Swansea sees Jimmy for his hypocrisy and refuses to treat him as the leader. He pokes fun at Jimmy's useless attempts to fix everything and, in his last moments alive, calls out his delusion as Jimmy refuses to admit his moral failing. Swansea gets increasingly angry at Jimmy as first Daisuke dies from Jimmy's own schemes, and Anya telling everything to Swansea before overdosing. Jimmy argues against Swansea's words and still assures him that he can fix everything, even as he fires a gun at him. Jimmy has a low opinion of Swansea, thinking of him as a useless drunkard wishing to save his skin before the rest. Deep inside, he feels guilty for his death, realizing he was in the wrong.
