Jeffrey was a 13-year-old who recently moved to a new neighborhood with his brother, Liu, and their parents. On their first day of school, they encountered three bullies named Randy, Keith, and Troy, who harassed them. Jeff brutally beat up the bullies after they threatened him and Liu with knives. Liu took the blame for it and was arrested, leaving Jeff consumed by guilt.

The bullies didn't give up, and they attacked Jeff again at a party. Jeff managed to knock out one of them, but not before being doused in bleach and set on fire by Keith. During this traumatic event, Jeff's mind snapped.

That night, Jeff's mother discovered him carving his face into a permanent smile, claiming that he no longer wanted to exert energy on smiling. He also burned off his eyelids so he could constantly see his face. Horrified, his mother told his father about Jeff's actions. However, Jeff soon escaped from the house. The commotion roused Liu, who had recently been released from prison. As Jeff ran into the forest, he yelled to Liu, "Go to sleep".]
