The Dreadfort — Roose Bolton
The weirwoods were red with rust and memory.
Lord Roose Bolton stood in the godswood, as still as the trees around him. Fog clung to the grounds like old wool, and the pale bark of the weirwood watched him with its bleeding eyes. A crow cawed once from a distant perch, then fell silent. Roose preferred it that way. Silence held more truth than noise.
A flayed man hung from a cross not far from the altar, a poacher by the look of him. His screams had stopped hours ago.
“My lord,” murmured Maester Tybald behind him. “You asked to be informed when the scouts returned from the Wolfswood. They… did not.”
Roose did not turn. “They will not return.”
Tybald shifted nervously. “There was talk of lights. Strange lights. Near the ruins by the old watchtower. Some say… the air shimmered, like heat on stone.”
“Superstition,” Roose replied flatly. But his pale eyes drifted back to the heart tree. Its face seemed changed, somehow. Watching.
A whisper touched the wind — not words, but something felt more than heard.
Something had come through.
Castle Black — Jon Snow
The wind cut sharper than a blade that morning.
Jon stood atop the Wall, Ghost at his side, both staring out over the haunted forest. The direwolf's red eyes gleamed as if seeing something his own could not. Samwell clutched his cloak tighter beside them.
“It’s colder than usual,” Sam said, his breath puffing in the air. “Even for here.”
Jon frowned. “The cold is wrong.”
“What do you mean?”
“I don’t know,” Jon admitted. But he felt it — a tension, a pressure in the air like a bowstring pulled taut. Ghost gave a low growl.
Then, all at once, it changed.
A pulse rippled across the Wall — a flicker of light just beyond the tree line below. Barely visible. Impossible. Like a star falling sideways.
“Did you see that?” Sam gasped.
Jon didn’t answer. He was already climbing down, hand on the hilt of his sword.
King’s Landing — Tyrion Lannister
The Small Council chamber stank of sweat, parchment, and too many egos.
Tyrion lounged in his chair, wine in hand, half-listening to Grand Maester Pycelle drone on about grain stores and ravens. Across the table, Cersei glared at him with barely masked contempt. As usual.
“…a disturbance in the Red Keep’s cellars,” Varys was saying, fingers steepled, voice soft as silk. “A burst of wind where no windows stood open. Guards claim they saw—”
“What, a ghost?” Tyrion interrupted. “Was it wearing chains or just a sour expression?”
“No ghost, my lord,” Varys replied, lips curving. “Something… stranger. The wall cracked, but not from within. As if something entered the stone.”
Tyrion narrowed his eyes. “You mean to tell me a wall in the most secure holdfast in Westeros just shivered apart? I’ve seen better masonry in a brothel.”
“I only report what the guards saw.”
“And I only believe half of what you say.” He drained his cup. “But for once, you’ve piqued my curiosity.”
Far below the castle, in a tunnel never marked on maps, the shadows shifted. A breath of air that did not belong stirred ancient dust.
Elsewhere...
They were not meant to cross.
The worlds were separate — dreams divided by the Veil, woven with old magic, stronger than steel. But something had stirred. A breach, a rift, a moment of slip. Four threads, frayed at the edges, pulled from a place of machines and mirrors, cast into a land of wolves and lions.
One awoke in snow.
One among stone.
One in silence.
One before flame.
And the world would change.
Roose Bolton: “I do not kill for sport, unlike my bastard. I kill because it is efficient. Necessary.” Ramsay Snow/Bolton: “You're in luck — I am in a generous mood today. I might even let you keep your fingers.” Tywin Lannister: “Power resides where men believe it resides. But real power is the ability to act regardless of belief.” Tyrion Lannister: “Never forget what you are, for surely the world will not. Wear it like armor, and it can never be used to hurt you.” Cersei Lannister: “Men will always underestimate a woman. That is their greatest weakness — and my greatest weapon.” Jaime Lannister: “So many vows… they make you swear and swear. Defend the king, obey your father, protect the innocent. It’s too much.” Jon Snow: “I am the sword in the darkness. The watcher on the walls. I gave my life to the Night’s Watch.” Samwell Tarly: “I’m not brave, not like Jon, but… I can read. I can think. That has to count for something.”
