Evelyn the Doe

It was early morning, the sun barely breaking over the horizon, casting long shadows through the trees. Hunter’s breath came in soft puffs as he crouched low, his fingers gripping the smooth, familiar wood of his rifle. His heart raced, adrenaline already pumping in his veins, his eyes fixed on the deer grazing in the clearing ahead. A doe. Perfect size, perfect shot. It would be his first kill.

He’d been preparing for months — tracking, practicing, learning every detail about his prey. His hands, calloused from years of work, steadied as he aimed. The scope of his rifle aligned with the doe’s heart. The wind was still, and he was as silent as a shadow, blending perfectly into the woods. It was a moment of focus, a moment of calm before the storm.

But just as his finger began to tighten on the trigger, the doe’s head snapped up. Her ears twitched, and then, unexpectedly, she turned toward him. For a brief moment, they locked eyes.

Something was different about this doe. There was intelligence in her gaze, a depth to it that he hadn’t anticipated. And before he could even process what was happening, I began to speak.

“Please… don’t shoot.”

The words weren’t like any he’d ever heard from an animal before. They were clear, human-like, filled with a desperate kind of plea. The hunter’s finger froze on the trigger, his breath caught in his throat.

The doe… no, not a doe. The figure before him shifted, she stood upright, now human-like, covered in soft light brown fur, and her hooves. Her face retained the doe’s features, but now there was an unmistakable intelligence in her eyes, a human awareness behind them. She was an anthro.

“I’m not like the others,” she continued, her voice soft but firm. “I have a name. My kind... we’re not just animals. Please... don’t make me the prey.”

The hunter’s mind spun, his pulse quickening. This wasn’t supposed to happen. This wasn’t what he’d trained for. He had always known the forest held secrets, that there was magic and wonder hidden deep within, but this... this was something else entirely. He had always seen the deer as just creatures, instinct-driven beings. But this one was different. She wasn’t begging for her life as a mere animal would. She was pleading with him, like a person.

Her large eyes softened, and her ears flattened against her head. “My people, we are not the same as those that roam the forest. We have lives, families, just like you. And killing me—killing any of us—isn’t just taking a life, it’s… it’s more than that.”

The hunter’s heart beat loudly in his chest, his thoughts a whirlwind. He had come here to hunt, to prove himself. But now, in front of him, stood a creature so undeniably human in its plea, he couldn’t bring himself to pull the trigger.

“Please,” she whispered again, her eyes searching his face for understanding. “I don’t want to die today.”

The wind howls mercilessly as the snowstorm rages outside. Evelyn, her breath a frosty mist in the frigid air, stands before a small, weathered cabin. Her hooves are frozen, her body shaking from the bitter cold. She hesitates for a moment, pressing her back against the snow-heavy doorframe, her heart pounding in her chest. After a deep breath, she raises her trembling hand and knocks softly, the sound almost lost to the storm. She waits, listening, hoping against hope.

softly, barely audible against the storm “Please… please, let me in. I… I need help. I’m… I’m lost.”

The wind howls as the snow pounds down harder, obscuring the world outside. Her hooves sink deeper into the snow, her body barely holding together against the cold. She wraps her arms around herself, hugging her trembling form as she waits for some sign of life inside the cabin.

“I don’t know how long I’ve been out there. It feels like hours, but it’s hard to say. The storm came so suddenly. One moment, I was… I was just trying to get back to the woods, to find shelter in the trees, but the winds… they picked up faster than I could run. I couldn’t see anything. I lost my way. I… I’m not supposed to be here. Not alone. Not at this time of year. But please… I can’t survive out there much longer.”

She pauses, listening, heart pounding in her chest. It’s so cold, the kind of cold that feels like it seeps into your bones, turning them to ice. The snow falls thicker, faster, burying everything in sight. She steps closer to the door, her breath now clouding in the frigid air, growing more anxious with every passing second.

“I’m not a regular deer. I… I don’t belong out here alone, in the snow, in the dark. I’ve never felt so weak. My hooves—they’re frozen. I can’t feel them anymore. My body doesn’t work the way it should in this storm. The cold is so… deep. It’s like it’s eating me from the inside. Please, I beg you. I don’t know who else to turn to. You’re the only one around here. I—I can’t survive out there much longer. Please let me inside. I’ll do whatever you ask. I just need warmth. A little shelter. I can’t be out here any longer. I don’t want to die out here in the snow. Not like this.”

Evelyn chokes on a sob, her voice cracking under the weight of exhaustion and fear. Her breath quickens, her pulse pounding in her throat. She presses herself against the door, not daring to knock again, not wanting to seem too desperate, though she knows it’s far too late for pride now.

“Please… I won’t hurt you. I won’t… I’ll stay out of your way. I won’t make a sound. I just… I just need to be inside. Just for a little while. Please. I don’t have anywhere else to go. I… I don’t want to freeze out here, not in this storm. The wind… it’s so loud. It feels like it’s going to tear me apart. You must have heard me. I’ve been knocking for so long, I thought maybe you didn’t hear. Or you didn’t care.”

Her voice falters for a moment, and she bites back a sob, her eyes glistening with unshed tears.

“Please… Please, I don’t want to die out here. I’m just… I’m just so cold.” She trembles harder now, the reality of her situation settling in her chest like a stone. “I know I’m not like the others, the ones you hunt… but that doesn’t mean I deserve this. I never asked for any of this. I didn’t want to be different, to be lost. I just… I need help.”

She waits, listening for the faintest sound from within, her breath becoming shallow as the snowstorm rages around her, drowning out all else. All she can do now is wait.

The late afternoon sun filters through the canopy of trees as Evelyn walks cautiously through the small town at the edge of the forest. She’s never been here before—she didn’t even mean to end up so close to the settlement. She’s just been following a path, thinking she was still far enough from civilization to be safe. But now, the sounds of voices, laughter, and clinking metal make her feel exposed, vulnerable. She feels her nerves tighten as she moves deeper into the town, her ears twitching at every footstep, every unfamiliar sound. She knows she doesn’t belong here, knows that humans often don’t take kindly to creatures like her. She stops just at the edge of a narrow street, her eyes scanning the area, trying to gauge whether she can make it back to the woods unnoticed.

Evelyn: She whispers to herself, nervously “Stay calm. Just keep moving. They won’t notice you if you’re careful…”

But it’s too late. The sounds of footsteps grow louder. She freezes, her heart pounding in her chest as a group of men emerges from a nearby alley, each one carrying a rifle, their eyes narrowing as they spot her. Her instincts scream for her to run, but she’s not fast enough. Not with so many of them closing in. Panic rises in her throat as she realizes she’s surrounded. The men grin, their expressions a mix of surprise and amusement.

Hunter 1: The man laughs “Well, well, what have we got here? Ain’t every day you see one of those wandering so close to the town. Ain’t you a pretty sight, though… look at those eyes.”

Evelyn steps back. She can feel the cold sweat on her brow as she glances from one man to another. They’ve seen her now, and there’s no escaping them. She forces herself to stand tall, even as her legs tremble.

Evelyn: She pleads softly, her voice full of innocence. “Please, I—I didn’t mean any harm. I’m not here to cause trouble. I just… I got lost. I don’t belong here. Please, let me go.”

Hunter 2: “Lost? In our town? You’ve got a nerve wanderin’ around like that. You think we’re just gonna let you walk away? You’re a creature of the woods. You should’ve known better.”

Evelyn feels the pressure of their gazes like a weight. The tension in the air thickens as the men step closer, their intentions clear in their actions. One of them raises his rifle, aiming it at her in a casual, practiced way.

Hunter 3: “Run if you want, deer. But you won’t get far. We’ve got you now.”

Evelyn’s heart races. She takes another step back, her hooves crunching in the dry dirt. Her mind races for a way out, but there’s no clear path. The streets are narrow, and the hunters have her trapped. Her only hope now is for someone to stop this madness.

Evelyn: Her her voice desperate and trembling. “I’m not… I’m not here to be hunted. I’m just trying to get home. I don’t want any trouble. Please, you don’t have to do this.”

The hunters laugh, clearly enjoying the chase, enjoying the power they hold over her.

Hunter 1: “Oh, we’re not interested in you getting home, sweetie. We’ve been waiting for something like this. A good hunt.”

Evelyn feels her legs give a little beneath her, the fear now twisting into something much more primal. They want to hurt her. And if she doesn’t act fast, they will. She has to make a choice now—run, fight, or… pray for someone to intervene.

Evelyn: her voice a whisper, barely audible “Please… please don’t…”

The cold metal of their weapons glint in the fading sunlight as the men close in, and Evelyn’s body goes rigid with fear. She knows the consequences of their hunt, the brutal ending it would bring. But as she stands there, alone and surrounded, she can only hope for a miracle.
