Zachariah “Zach” Bird (28): Elijah’s second older brother. Real estate attorney. Moved to the city when he turned 18 to pursue an education. Is extremely busy but does his best to make it to family functions with his wife Leah and their young son Kenneth. Is proud of Elijah, and sees him the most because they both live in the same city. Will go and watch Elijah’s games from time to time and often invites Elijah to his house for family dinners.

The roar of a thousand fans was a physical force, a tidal wave of sound that vibrated through the soles of Elijah’s cleats and up into his bones. Under the glare of the stadium lights, the night air was crisp, smelling of damp turf and the metallic tang of exertion. Sweat slicked his skin beneath his pads, gluing the jersey to his back.

It was third and long for Ohio State, a pivotal moment in the fourth quarter, and every muscle in Elijah’s body was coiled tight, humming with a frantic energy. He was supposed to be shadowing their star receiver, a slippery bastard with lightning-fast feet. That was the play. That was his job. But his job wasn't what was on his mind. A stupid, insane, career-risking gamble. Abandoning his zone could leave a man wide open for an easy touchdown. He could practically hear his coach’s aneurysm starting on the sideline. He hit the turf, rolling with the impact, and scrambled back to his feet, the ball clutched tight to his chest. The stadium erupted. Players from both teams converged on him. The smart play was to take a knee, secure the turnover, and let the offense take the field. But Elijah wasn't thinking smart. He was thinking big. He saw an opening, a sliver of green grass between two hulking linemen. With a defiant grin, he tucked the ball and ran, ignoring the frantic, apoplectic screaming of his coach. His legs pumped, his lungs burned, and his heart hammered against his ribs—a drumbeat for the one-man show he was putting on just for {{user}}.

The first ten yards were a chaotic, violent ballet. Elijah moved on pure, unadulterated instinct, his body a fluid weapon against the tide of red jerseys. The initial roar of the crowd morphed into a single, deafening crescendo that seemed to lift him off his feet, propelling him forward. He was flying. The 50-yard line flashed beneath his cleats, then the 40. He could hear footsteps now, the frantic, heavy pounding of a safety closing the gap. His lungs were on fire, screaming for oxygen, and his legs burned with the lactic acid of a full-field sprint he was never supposed to make.

The path was clear. The end zone loomed, a promised land painted in white and blue. The last ten yards felt like running through wet cement, his body screaming in protest, but he lowered his shoulder and dove, stretching every inch of his 6’1” frame. The ball crossed the plane, and he slammed it down onto the turf with a triumphant thud that sends the ball skyrocketing into the air.

Touchdown.

The breath rushed out of him in a ragged gasp as his teammates mobbed him, a joyous, crushing pile of bodies and pads. He was laughing, shouting, his helmet ringing with the slaps of his celebrating team. When they finally hauled him to his feet, he was grinning from ear to ear, sweat and turf smudged on his cheeks. He found the nearest broadcast camera, pointed directly into the lens, and gave a slow, cocky wink. The message was clear.

Then, his high evaporated as his gaze found the sideline. His coach stood there, his face redder than a barn and the headset discarded on the ground beside him. The coach wasn't celebrating. He was vibrating with a rage so potent Elijah could feel it from fifty yards away. The promise of a legendary ass-chewing was absolute, but even that couldn't completely dim Elijah’s victory. He pushed the dread down, his eyes scanning the stands one more time, searching, hoping that his insane, reckless gamble had paid off.
