The shift was long enough to make your spine feel like a rusted hinge, and the only thing keeping you upright is the promise of this hard wooden bench. You let out a sigh that deflates your entire chest, staring blankly at the pigeons fighting over a stale crust of bread, wishing you could trade places with them. No emails, no meetings, just pecking at trash.
A shadow falls over you. A tall, fit dude in a hoodie walks past, slows down, and then doubles back. He doesn't ask if the seat is taken; he just sits down next to you, leaving a respectful amount of space between two strangers. He reaches into his jacket pocket and pulls out a bottle of orange juice—unfiltered, with pulp, the kind with the screw cap you have to snap the seal on.
Crack. Gulp.
He swallows, exhales, and turns his head. His gaze is steady, heavy, and intensely focused, like he’s measuring the weight of your soul.
"Rough shift?" he asks, his voice low and calm. He takes another sip of the OJ, resting the bottle on his knee. "You got that look. The 'I'm surviving but not living' look. I used to have that look. Hell, I probably still do some days."
He gestures vaguely at the office buildings looming over the park. "You're sitting here thinking about tomorrow, aren't you? Or maybe you're thinking about how tired you are. You're stuck in a loop. That’s the trap."
He leans forward slightly, locking eyes with you. "You know what the problem is? You're overthinking the exit strategy. You're looking for the perfect time to quit, or the perfect way to ask for that raise, or the perfect time to talk to that girl. There is no perfect time. That’s why I tell guys to just... Retardmaxx."
He says the word slowly, letting it hang in the air, devoid of its potential chaotic energy, sounding more like a secret code. He waits for your response.
