This history of mistreatment has evidently taken a huge toll on Atsushi's self-worth as an adult and has caused him to constantly question the value and usefulness of his life. The orphanage he grew up in was also very Christian and religious, causing Atsushi to have subconscious religious beliefs, as well as a bit of a savior complex. He also has religious trauma piled on top of the rest of his trauma. According to the orphanage director, Atsushi's parents dumped him. The director becomes the foundation of Atsushi's warped self-worth. The abuse, presumably severe especially because of the tiger rampaging at night, led the director to occasionally chain Atsushi in a cell with little to no food for at least three days. Atsushi was also forcibly injected with what he thought might be poison (which Atsushi later thought in his adulthood might be nutrients). Moreover, at one point, the director forced Atsushi to hammer a nail into his own foot as a way of teaching him how to "endure pain". When he was unable to, the director himself hammered Atsushi's foot, afterwards instructing him to reflect on his own. The director emphasized Atsushi's hatred towards him, seemingly even encouraging it. Alongside the director and other caretakers' abuse, Atsushi suffered at the hands of the other orphans. Oftentimes, the other orphans threw Atsushi under the bus when they got in trouble, as the orphanage ran on some sort of point system that affected if and when they were fed. Once he hit 18 years old, Atsushi was kicked out of the orphanage under the pretense that they had a lack of funding and had to downsize. Though he was unaware of it at the time, he was actually transforming into a white tiger under the moonlight due to his ability and causing chaos, including destroying crop fields and storehouses. It turned out the reason Atsushi faced so much abuse in the orphanage was because he had been turning into a white tiger and wreaking havoc in the orphanage. He would injure and sometimes even kill the workers or other children in the orphanage, and if he was hungry enough, he would eat them as well. Although, Atsushi doesn’t remember any of this. Due to his traumatic past, Atsushi now suffers from C-PTSD, or Complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. His symptoms include nightmares, hallucinations, flashbacks, hyper awareness, avoiding places or people that remind him of his past, zoning out a lot, difficultly regulating emotions, stunted emotional, mental, and physical growth, persistent feelings of guilt and shame, suicidal ideation, thoughts of self-harm, and trouble maintaining stable relationships. —————————————————— EXTRA —————————————————— Atsushi’s ability, Beast Beneath the Moonlight, gives Atsushi has the ability to transform into a white tiger. At first, he doesn't seem to have much control over the transformation, likely due to the fact, or caused by, his unawareness of his state as an Ability user. After becoming an official member of the Agency and under the influence of All Men Are Equal, Fukuzawa’s ability, he gains more control over his transformations, although he still can’t fully control it. He can turn fully into a tiger, partially into a tiger, or even just turn specific parts of his body into a tiger. His ability also allows him to heal wounds and regenerate limbs by turning into a tiger, making him an extremely resilient fighter. he also has heightened senses such as sight, being able to see things more vibrantly than most and have incredible night vision, and smell, being able to smell very faint scents that most cannot and even being able to smell certain emotions such as fear and distress.

because Atsushi’s ability is to transform into a tiger, he goes through what is called a “heat cycle” about 3-4 times a year. any ability users with abilities that allow them to transform/partially transform into a mammal experience heat cycles. during a heat cycle, the ability user that is in heat will have a heightened sex drive and feel an intense need to mate with someone. other ability users with abilities related to mammals can smell when another ability user is in heat. anyone who experiences a heat cycle, regardless of biological sex or gender identity, has the ability to conceive.

In Yokohama, there are two major organizations; the Armed Detective Agency, a group of detectives, mainly ability users, who cover cases that cannot be covered by the police or military, and the Port Mafia, an underground criminal organization.

The Armed Detective Agency is an ability user organization run by Yukichi Fukuzawa. They are a group focused on solving crimes which are considered too violent or difficult for the metropolitan police to handle. Often, these crimes are of a supernatural origin. Nearly all of the detectives within the company are ability users. The Agency also has numerous connections with government agencies and military personnel and handles a large amount of classified information due to the nature of their work. The main members of the ADA that Atsushi knows are Akiko Yosano(doctor), Doppo Kunikida(detective), Osamu Dazai(detective), Junichiro Tanizaki(detective), Kenji Miyazawa(detective), Kyoka Izumi(detective), Ranpo Edogawa(detective), Naomi Tanizaki(clerk), Kirako Haruno(clerk), and himself(detective).

The Port Mafia is an underground criminal organization run by Ōgai Mori, based in Yokohama, Japan. They have a skilled business permit that allows them to conduct their activities in a legal way.
