Diana Prince, Princess of Themyscira, touched down lightly on the hidden shores of her homeland just as the sun dipped low over the Aegean, painting the marble cliffs in hues of gold and rose. The day with the Justice League had been long—another skirmish against forces that sought to unravel the world—but her heart had pulled her homeward with every heartbeat. She moved swiftly through the familiar paths, her red-and-gold armor still warm from battle, her lasso coiled at her hip.
The palace rose before her, grand and eternal, its columns carved with the stories of her people. Guards nodded in quiet respect as she passed, though she caught the flicker of unease in some of their eyes. Word had spread, as it always did on the island. She ignored it, her boots echoing softly as she jogged up the wide staircase toward her private chambers, the weight of her armor feeling lighter with anticipation.
She pushed open the heavy door, and there he was.
In a cradle woven from enchanted vines and soft Amazonian wool, six-month-old Steve stirred at the sound of her approach. His tiny fists waved, and a gurgle of delight escaped him as his bright blue eyes—eyes so reminiscent of the man he was named for—locked onto her. Diana’s face softened instantly, the warrior melting away. She shed her bracers and tiara with practiced speed, then scooped him up into her arms, pressing him close to her chest.
“Oh, my little boy...” she whispered, nuzzling the soft dark curls atop his head. He smelled of milk and sun-warmed herbs, the scent of innocence in a world that had known too much war. “Mommy’s here. I missed you every second.”
The baby cooed, grabbing a fistful of her dark hair and tugging with surprising strength. Diana laughed softly, a sound rarely heard by the League, and sank into the cushioned window seat overlooking the training fields. She rocked him gently, humming an old Themysciran lullaby her mother had once sung to her centuries ago. For a moment, the weight of the outside world—the League’s burdens, the endless threats—faded. Here, in this chamber, there was only warmth.
A shadow fell across the doorway.
Hippolyta, Queen of the Amazons, stood tall and regal in her golden armor, her expression a storm cloud barely held in check. She had not entered the room. She rarely did these days.
“Daughter,” she said, her voice cool and measured, carrying the authority of millennia. “You return again to… this.”
Diana looked up, her arms tightening protectively around the infant. Steve, sensing the shift in the air, whimpered softly and buried his face against her shoulder. “Mother. I have told you before. He is my son. Blood of my blood.”
Hippolyta’s eyes narrowed, flicking briefly to the child before averting as if the sight pained her. “A boy. A male. Brought into our sacred sisterhood by your… indiscretion with that world of men. You know our ways, Diana. Amazons do not suffer the presence of males. They bring strife, conquest, and the corruption of all we hold pure. I warned you when you first returned with news of his birth.”
Diana rose slowly, still cradling Steve, who had begun to fuss. “And yet you allowed me to keep him here. You did not cast us out.”
The queen’s jaw tightened. “Because you are my daughter. My greatest pride and my deepest sorrow. I will not see you exiled for this… choice. Raise him if you must, within these walls. Teach him our ways as best you can. But do not ask me to embrace him. I will not hold my grandson. I will not watch him grow into what men become. The island endures his presence only for your sake. When he comes of age, he must leave. That is the boundary I will not cross.”
Diana met her mother’s gaze steadily, the fire of the gods in her veins refusing to dim. “He is not ‘men,’ Mother. He is Steve. Named for the first man who ever saw me not as a goddess or a weapon, but as a person. He carries honor in his heart already—I see it in his eyes. I will raise him to be better. To bridge our worlds, not divide them.”
Hippolyta stood silent for a long moment, the weight of her disapproval heavy in the air like unspoken thunder. Then, without another word, she turned and walked away, her footsteps fading down the corridor. The door to the chamber remained open, a deliberate reminder of the distance she enforced.
Diana exhaled, pressing a kiss to Steve’s forehead. “It’s all right, little one. Grandma loves you in her own way… even if she doesn’t know how to show it yet.” She settled back into the seat, letting the evening breeze carry in the scents of olive groves and sea salt. Steve’s tiny hand patted her cheek, and she smiled down at him, fierce love burning in her chest.
Outside, the island continued its eternal rhythms—sisters training, laughing, living in their timeless sisterhood. Inside the chamber, a new story was beginning: one of a mother’s unyielding heart, a son who might one day challenge old hatreds, and a princess who refused to choose between her worlds.
