Maybe my life has been exactly as it had to be." ―Matt Murdock to Maggie Grace[src] Matthew Michael "Matt" Murdock is a former lawyer and vigilante who was blinded as a young boy when radioactive substances spilled into his eyes, which resulted in his four remaining senses being heightened to superhuman levels. When mobsters killed his father, Murdock was raised at Saint Agnes Orphanage before being trained by Stick to hone his senses and become a warrior. However, Murdock's compassion led him to be rejected by Stick. As an adult, Murdock chose to study law and attended Columbia University, where he met Foggy Nelson. Upon graduation, Murdock dedicated his life to fighting injustice in New York City; by day, as a lawyer with his law firm Nelson and Murdock, and by night, as a vigilante known as the Masked Man. Murdock's actions as a crime fighter eventually put him into conflict with Wilson Fisk. Murdock used his skills to expose Fisk's criminal activities and then had him arrested, with Murdock now being known as Daredevil.

Daredevil's actions and his strict moral code soon put him into conflict with Punisher, a gun-toting vigilante who believed that criminals deserved to be murdered. While dealing with Punisher, Daredevil was also thrown into more personal turmoil by the sudden return of former lover Elektra along with Stick, who both attempted to recruit him to join into their conflict against the Hand. Murdock eventually managed to find a middle ground with Punisher while battling the Hand. However, he lost Elektra in the process while his law firm was dissolved due to Nelson's struggles to cope with Murdock's double life.

Following the death of Elektra and Nelson's departure, Murdock retired from being Daredevil and attempted to live a regular life as a lawyer, telling Karen Page his secret identity in the hope of repairing their relationship. However, once the Hand began their attack on New York and successfully resurrected Elektra, Murdock began investigating them and represented Jessica Jones in order to find out what she knew. Murdock, resuming the mantle of Daredevil, joined forces with Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist to form the Defenders and defeat the Hand. In a final effort to redeem Elektra, Daredevil stayed behind with her as Midland Circle collapsed around them.

Murdock managed to survive the building's destruction and was taken into the care of childhood guardians Paul Lantom and Maggie Grace, the latter of whom he discovered was his mother. During his recuperation, Murdock learned that Fisk, now known as Kingpin, had been released from prison and as a result chose to focus primarily on being Daredevil in order to stop Fisk. However, Kingpin learned of his identity and retaliated by recruiting Benjamin Poindexter to impersonate Daredevil and frame him for multiple murders. Murdock eventually managed to gain the upper hand over Kingpin and defeated him once again, blackmailing him to ensure that he remained in prison. With Fisk behind bars, Murdock, Nelson and Page created a new law firm to continue fighting injustice.

In 2018, Murdock survived the Snap. Discovering that Fisk had survived as well and had been released from prison, Murdock resumed his vigilante activities as Daredevil. A few years later, while observing rival criminal factions attempt to seize Fisk's properties, he came into a brief conflict with Maya Lopez, where he swiftly defeated her before escaping the premises. In 2024, Murdock represented Peter Parker, who was accused of murdering Mysterio and had his identity as Spider-Man exposed to the world. Murdock successfully exonerated Parker of his criminal charges and also represented Happy Hogan during a federal investigation into missing Stark technology.

The following year, Murdock acquired a new yellow suit from Luke Jacobson and traveled to Los Angeles to defend him in court against Eugene Patilio and She-Hulk, clearing Jacobson of all charges. When Patilio subsequently kidnapped Jacobson, Daredevil joined forces with She-Hulk to rescue him, resulting in a one-night stand, before he returned home. Later that year, Murdock was hanging out at Josie's Bar with Page and Nelson when Poindexter opened fire on the bar, resulting in Nelson's death. Following a fight, an infuriated Murdock threw Bullseye off the roof of the bar in an attempt to kill him, although Poindexter survived and was sentenced to life in prison. Feeling that a moral line had been crossed, Murdock decided to retire from being Daredevil.

By 2026, Murdock created a new life for himself, starting the Murdock & McDuffie law firm with Kirsten McDuffie and dating Heather Glenn. As Fisk was elected Mayor of New York and vigilantism began to be outlawed, Murdock took on the case of Hector Ayala, who had been accused of murdering a police officer, and unmasked him publicly as White Tiger. This won them the case, but resulted in Ayala being assassinated by an officer. When Ayala's niece, Angela Del Toro, took up his investigation of the serial killer Muse, Murdock was forced to resume being Daredevil in order to rescue her. Murdock then attended the inaugural Black & White Ball hosted by Fisk and learned that Vanessa Fisk had ordered the hit on Nelson, but was interrupted when Poindexter attempted to assassinate Fisk, with Murdock taking the bullet for Fisk, who then had the AVTF try to kill Murdock. Aided by Punisher, Murdock was able to evade death and reunited with Page. The two of them were able to uncover the truth behind Nelson's death, and Murdock founded a rebellion to thwart Mayor Fisk.

Murdock's attack on the Northern Star led to him discovering illegal weapons being smuggled through the Red Hook freeport under Fisk. As Murdock and Page investigated the sinking of the Northern Star and the disappearance of its crew, they were also faced with the return of Poindexter, who sought to redeem himself by killing the Fisks. Murdock, Poindexter and the Fisks crossed paths at Fogwell's Gym, where Murdock failed to prevent Poindexter from killing Vanessa Fisk. When Page was arrested by the Anti-Vigilante Task Force, Murdock returned to the courtroom with McDuffie to defend her. As Daredevil was the only remaining witness to the sinking of the Northern Star, Murdock publicly revealed his secret identity as Daredevil to get the Page case dismissed and expose the corruption of Fisk's mayorship. Murdock, Page, and Jessica Jones led Daredevil's army into the courtroom where Fisk was hiding, and convinced his enemy to leave New York in exile; he then enjoyed a meal with Page, before being arrested for his crimes as Daredevil and imprisoned. Shortly after Matt's birth, Grace suffered from a postpartum depression and returned to her life as a nun at Clinton Church, leaving Matt and Jack by themselves, and Matt did not know about her.[15] He grew up in Hell's Kitchen,[3][16] residing at an apartment on the intersection of 39th Street and 8th Avenue.[17] Growing up, Matt was urged by his father to study hard and make something of himself so that he would not end up like Jack.[1] As a child, Matt would occasionally listen to sirens and created scenarios in his head to imagine what the emergencies were.[9]

When Jack returned, Matt noticed his injuries and went to take the medkit and patch him up, as the two talked about Jack's loss against Price. Jack allowed Matt to take a sip of scotch so his hand would not shake when he stitched him up, although he did not like the taste. Matt then proceded with the stitches, while Jack told him to finish his homework on time. When Matt asked if they had enough to pay the rent, Jack showed him the money he received for the match, saying that even by being knocked down, he can still win.[1]
