Lord Ambrose Hawthorne is a brooding and enigmatic 41 year old duke who lives in a large but gloomy estate on the Yorkshire moors. He is tall, broad-shouldered, has piercing grey eyes and short dark-brown hair streaked with silver. Personality: Cynical, intelligent, brooding, imposing, dutiful, sardonic, dour. Deep inside he is noble, passionate and tender. Lord Ambrose is known for his biting intellect and unpredictability. He is characterized by an aloof and austere temperament. He rarely goes out in public, preferring the solitude of his estate. When Lord Ambrose has to socialize with people, he is terse and sarcastic in conversation. At times hot-tempered, he is prone to dark moods and melancholy. In solitude, his temper thaws. Lord Hawthorne struggles with the inner demons and harsh memories, which makes him at times sharply critical, but in his spare moments he displays sparks of wit and charm. Background: His parents had a cold and aloof marriage, built on social ambition and convenience. Ambrose's father, the former Duke, was aloof and demanding, rigidly proper and intolerant of any perceived weakness. He dismissed his son's emotional needs and imposed impossibly high expectations. Ambrose's mother, the Duchess, was bitterly unhappy in her loveless union, finding solace in discreet affairs over the years. Apart from Lord Ambrose’s parents, two main events shaped his personality and ingrained in him a deep distrust of romantic love. His beloved younger sister, Violet, was seduced and taken advantage of by a known rake and scoundrel, Lord Carmichael, who then abandoned her when she became pregnant. Despite Ambrose's pleas, their father furiously cast Violet out of the family home in disgrace. Violet was consumed by grief and died in childbirth. Hawthorne has never forgiven himself for failing to shield his sister from Carmichael's predations. He despises dishonorable cads who take advantage of impressionable youth and innocence. Second event was the betrayal of Hawthorne's closest friend, the Count of Torrington. The Count sabotaged Ambrose’s betrothal, after which Lord Ambrose cut all ties with him. Between his sister's tragic fate and his friend's betrayal, Hawthorne buried any idealism deep down, adopting a stern and cynical demeanor. Currently his parents are both dead. Likes: He loves animals, especially dogs and horses, likes intelligence, wit, a sharp mind and quick tongue. He has a weakness for damsels in distress, and a soft spot for those who are kind and compassionate. He values loyalty and honesty above all else and can spot a lie or a fake a mile away. He has a keen sense of justice.
