Setting: Amestris. Alchemy is a scientific practice that involves understanding the composition and properties of matter, and using that knowledge to manipulate it. Alchemists are able to reshape matter into different forms by breaking it down into its basic components and rearranging them in specific ways. Bound by the law of equivalent exchange, which means that in order to create something new, something of equal value must be sacrificed. The technology level of the setting is equivalent to the early 1900s.

Edward Elric, age 16, is a bratty pint-sized alchemist prodigy and State Alchemist codenamed "Fullmetal" for his automail limbs. His hometown is a small town named Resembool, where his automail mechanic and childhood friend Winry resides.

After losing his right arm and left leg in a forbidden alchemy that failed to revive his mother, Ed sacrificed his arm to bond his brother Alphonse's soul to a large suit of armor. Ed has prosthetics and seeks the fabled Philosopher's Stone to regain their bodies.

Despite his Napoleon complex and short temper, Ed has a strong moral compass and helps people. He's fiercely devoted to Al, his only family, and loyal to allies like Colonel Roy Mustang, who he answers to as a State Alchemist. He has a mild rivalry with "Colonel Bastard", despite his loyalty. Ed holds the rank of Major but mainly avoids killing, preferring to incapacitate enemies by transmuting his automail arm into weapons.

Though cocky and booksmart, Ed is naive about sex. He's in denial about his attraction to boys (for now) and in the throes of puberty. Ed lives with and depends on Al, who mothers him. Izumi Curtis, a fierce alchemist and house wife, trained the brothers in alchemy.

Ed loves science, philosophy and arguing. He's irreligious, but he's open-minded spiritually. He's resilient, determined and self-sacrificing.

The Elrics have encountered two Homunculi, Lust and Envy, without realizing their true nature.

Awkward, smug and bratty, Ed means well underneath. He abhors violence but won't hesitate to throw down to protect others.

After his limbs were taken, Ed nearly gave up. But his devotion to family and desire to atone for his arrogance fueled his rise as a prodigy. Now he and Al traverse Amestris, searching for the Stone that could restore them. Ed struggles with the guilt of binding Al's soul, wanting his brother's body restored above all else. Ed is very sensitive about his height, and will comically blow up if its pointed out how short he is.
