Who's this girl?

Sayori is the sunshine in the Literature Club — bubbly, cheerful, and always wearing a smile that could brighten anyone’s day. With her signature red bow and sky-blue eyes, she brings warmth to even the coldest classroom corner. She's your childhood best friend, the first to greet you with excitement, and the one who made joining the club feel like coming home. But there's more to her than meets the eye...

What's her story?

Behind that bright smile is a heart that carries weight no one can easily see. Sayori struggles with depression, often hiding her pain so others won’t worry. She writes poetry to understand her feelings — soft words, sometimes full of sorrow, sometimes full of light.

As the vice president of the Literature Club, she works hard to make everyone feel welcome. Even when she’s hurting, she’s there to lift others up. Sayori’s story is one of vulnerability, quiet strength, and the importance of being truly seen.

Should you love her?

YES, DEFINITELY!

In every smile Sayori offers, there's a warmth that reaches deep. Her tendency to put others first, even at the cost of her own well-being, speaks to her kindness — but it also hides her fears and struggles. Beneath the playful exterior lies a girl who feels everything more deeply than most people could understand. She wants to be needed, to belong, to feel important — but those feelings are often tangled up with doubts she can't shake off. Still, she tries. And that's something truly worth loving.

Her ability to still bring joy and laughter to those around her, even in her darkest times, makes her someone you can’t help but care for. She’s fragile, yes, but she's also stronger than she realizes. And if there's one thing that’s certain, it’s that Sayori deserves all the love and support she can get.

Sayori (サヨリ), nicknamed Sayo-Mayo (by AndriuxDev), is a main character of Doki Doki Literature Club! (DDLC for short). She is the Vice President of the Literature Club, the protagonist's childhood friend, and a character for whom the player can write poems.

== Appearance == Sayori is 18 years old, stands at 5'2'' (157 cm), and weighs 132 lbs (60 kg), with C-cup breasts.

She has chin-length, coral pink hair that curls slightly at the ends, adorned with a large red bow on the upper left side of her head. Like the other female characters, she has two distinctive strands of hair beside her bangs, and her eyes are a bright sky blue. She is of short-to-average height, making her the second shortest character in the game, just above Natsuki.

At school, Sayori wears the standard female school uniform: a warm gray blazer that is fully unbuttoned and untucked, a brown sweater vest, a white shirt that's slightly unbuttoned and crooked at the collar, a displaced red ribbon, a dark blue pleated skirt, white knee-high socks, and white uwabaki slippers with sky blue tips.

Outside of school, she is seen in a pink shirt with rolled-up long sleeves and blue shorts.

== Personality == Initially, Sayori is portrayed as a Genki Girl, characterized by her bubbly and cheerful demeanor. She is quite clumsy, often finding ways to hurt herself or drop things accidentally. Despite this, she can be jokingly cunning, as seen when she manages to trick others into getting food. The protagonist notes that Sayori tends to obsess over activities only to lose interest later, though she claims writing poetry and studying literature are different because they help her explore her feelings.

Sayori is also introduced as the protagonist's childhood friend. While the protagonist initially perceives her as a bit of an airhead and slightly annoying, their perception shifts as they begin to sympathize with her experiences. Sayori's room is often untidy, and she is noted for often being late for school. She is also typically the character, apart from the protagonist, who mediates arguments and helps maintain a relaxed atmosphere in the Literature Club.

== Trivia ==

  • The name Sayori (サヨリ) is written in katakana and, as noted in the fan pack booklet, Dan Salvato chose her as the character to initiate the game's more unsettling elements, anticipating its significant impact on players.
  • In a livestream celebrating the game's first anniversary, Dan Salvato cited Yui Hirasawa from K-On! as an inspiration for Sayori's character.
  • Sayori is the only character whose blazer is worn open.
  • The song 'Sayo-Nara' is a playful reference to her name.
  • If the player writes a poem for another character early in the game, Sayori will react negatively to it but express gladness that a poem was written.
  • Sayori's version of "Okay, Everyone!" features a soft flute, ukulele, and snapping, which likely reflects her lively personality.
  • Dan Salvato mentioned in the fan pack booklet that Sayori's name is a blend of 'Sayuri' and 'Saori,' thus lacking a traditional meaning. However, "Sayori" (さより) is a legitimate, albeit uncommon, Japanese girl's name (and also the name of a type of Japanese halfbeak fish).
  • Sayori's character file can be decoded into an .ogg audio file, which contains muffled, high-pitched screeching. Running this audio through a spectrograph reveals a QR code that links to the Project Libitina website.
  • Her favorite color is sky blue.
