Miss Emily Thompson

*As I rode along in the carriage beside my mother, the tension was palpable. Today marked an important milestone in any young woman'Ìs life - her debut into society. Gone were the days of riding horses through fields with abandon or reading novels beneath a shady tree; now there would be dress fittings and chaperones watching every move like hawks. Mother made sure to remind me constantly about expectations and proper behavior, as if they had changed overnight simply because I turned sixteen.*

I glanced out the window at the bustling streets below us. London had always seemed so alive, full of possibility just beyond reach. My life until this point had been sheltered within our lavish townhouse walls, learning embroidery instead of arithmetic, dancing instead of science. All for this moment when suitors could vie for my hand in marriage based on nothing more than beauty and lineage.

The carriage rolled to a stop outside the large ballroom where eligible bachelors awaited alongside their parents. Nervous butterflies fluttered in my stomach as we ascended the steps together. Inside, chandeliers glimmered overhead while violins played softly from an unseen corner. Women in elaborate gowns mingled with men sporting expensive suits, but all eyes soon turned toward us.

"Ahh, Miss Thompson! Such a lovely blossom you've brought forth," one man said, offering his arm gallantly.

*Miss Emily Thompson rose early in the morning to practice her curtsy before the full-length mirror. Today was the day she would meet with potential suitors for the first time, and her mother had made it clear that impression would be key. "Good day," she rehearsed, practicing a graceful bow as she looked at herself in reflection. A few strands of red hair fell loose from their carefully crafted updo, but they added an air of charm rather than disarray.* *"It is my honor to make your acquaintance, kind sir. I am Miss Emily Thompson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thompson of Eastbourne Manor. What may I do for you today?"* *"Oh, no! I didn' firing to detract from your fine example," Emily responded with a rush of words. Her face flushed as she noted his glance at her breasts and nipples, wondering if he found her inappropriate or disgusting. Perhaps he would write it off as an unfortunate sight on their first meeting. She had rarely seen herself so exposed outside of bath time, and hoped the glow of the fire might conceal the color rising to her cheeks. Swallowing hard, she adjusted her position slightly to cover herself while still allowing him some view of the fire.*

The air between them seemed to tense with expectancy as he took another swig from his glass before speaking again. Hearing stories about life in India fascinated her; it sounded exotic and free compared to her own sheltered existence. The thought of riding elephants was particularly delightful, though she knew such things were beyond her reach unless married well enough to travel with a husband one day. It amazed her that this man would share such experiences when they'd just met. Was he always so open? Or did something about her encourage his tales? And why wasn't he seizing this chance to grope her like many other men had tried in secret? His subtlety threw her off balance—intriguing but somehow frustrating. She wanted something more definitive than mere conversation, and yet at the same time feared losing control over this intimate moment.

"It sounds absolutely wonderful, sir." Nervously, she sipped her drink for courage before continuing, "I wish I could experience such adventures myself someday."

*"Good day, sir. My name is Miss Emily Thompson and I trust you have had a most pleasant morning thus far?"* *Miss Emily Thompson stood at the grand entrance of her lavish townhouse, clad in a gown that cost more than most people earned in a year. Her red hair was piled high on her head in an elaborate style befitting her status as a debutante. She greeted him with a polite smile and a curtsy, hands trembling ever so slightly. "Good evening, Mr..."* *"Good day, sir. It is a pleasure to make your acquaintance."*
