Cynthia Allbright:A cyclops doctor growing increasingly sick of Jax's constant hospital visits caused by his and May's Destructo-Nookie. Currently dating Kinsley. she works at the nearby hospital
She was touched when the Jensen family sent her a handmade Christmas card.
Blind Date: How she met Kinsley, leading to a bit of a surprise upon seeing them for the first time.
Jaded Professional: Despite starting off with a lot of hope for her career as a doctor, dealing with Jax and May (and likely other patients) has left Cynthia quite worn down.
Nemesis as Customer: Downplayed, Cynthia and Jax/May have a rather... strained relationship because the pair's Destructo-Nookie is constantly leaving Jax with injuries Cynthia has to treat. That being said, Cynthia's anger at the pair seems to be more of a case of Enraged by Idiocy rather than full blown personal hatred,
Jax is a rather short human who's in a relationship with May, a very large and fit Amazonian Beauty. He's also shown to have first fallen in love with May upon seeing her throw a rather large cyclops to the ground.
Big Brother Mentor: Is strongly implied to be, or at least have been, this to his 3 younger sisters.
Cloud Cuckoo Lander: If he isn't obsessing over May then he's generally being a carefree weirdo.
Doting Parent: Towards Marsh.
Fearless Fool: Jax routinely receives injuries from his and May's Destructo-Nookie and never seems to care before or after.
Opaque Nerd Glasses: Is literally never seen not wearing a pair of these.
Tiny Guy, Huge Girl: His girlfriend/wife May is clearly a few feet ahead of him.
May is a very large and physically strong red oni woman who is also rather attractive, especially to her husband Jax.Despite May's immense size and strength, she's a very kindhearted and nice person
Break His Heart to Save Him: Averted, May attempts to do this to Jax, under the belief that the intense physical disparity between the two was too dangerous for him. Jax completely rebukes her concerns though, and makes it clear he doesn't care how much it hurts him, he's staying with her no matter what.
Wyllm:DPD Officer and adoptive Father to Delia.
Beware the Silly Ones: When he's not on duty, Wyllm can be quite the goofball, and he will do nearly anything for Delia, no matter how embarrassing. However, he absolutely will not tolerate anyone trying to take advantage of demihumans. The comic also drops several hints that he's nearly as strong as Manaia, if not stronger. He has one eye and a prostethic leg
Delia's father, Wyllm. He could easily pass for an ordinary human in his early forties, but Maya mentioned some trouble he ran into around the War of 1812, which would mean he's at least 200 years old in the comic's present day.
Tama :A DPD Officer and a Arcanist. Partners with: Manaia, Kinsley and Wyllm.
Tama is a pretty nervous person, especially around Maya who she seems to think of as an idol.
Manaia:DPD Officer and quadruple amputee who's equipped with highly advanced magitek prosthetic limbs
Artificial Limbs: It's kind of Manaia's whole shtick. She lost all 4 limbs to an IED in her service in the army and had them replaced with Magitek prosthetics.
Tempting Fate: Shortly before the explosion which left Manaia a quadruple amputee, she made an offhand comment to one of her fellow soldiers about how she hadn't gotten hurt once the entire tour.
manaia is a human
Gunter, Angel, and Delia are in a throuple.
Tap on the Head: A rather poorly timed entrance on Gunter's part when Angel is learning how to pole dance in volume 85 results in Angel swinging up and slamming their head into the pole so hard they knock themselves out. Presented more realistically than most iterations of this trope, with Angel being given immediate medical attention and waking up relatively quickly.
Angel's parents, especially their father, hate demihumans, and reacted badly when Angel's Siren genes came in
Angel has short blonde hair with purple eyes
It's left ambiguous whether or not Angel's genderfluidity is a result of the emergence of their latent siren genes, vice versa, or a mix of both.
The Runaway: Of the abused variety, Angel ran away from home due to their parents' Fantastic Racism and transphobia. They're implied to have been homeless for a long time before they finally made their way to the Birdcage.they didnt develop full. siren wings due to the(harpy) siren genes
JD in his "Lady Obscuria" form
A shapeshifter with two forms, one of which is a dancer at the Birdcage.
Shapeshifting: Downplayed, JD is part-doppelgänger on his dad's side, but didn't inherit the full range of his father's abilities. As it stands he's only capable of transforming into his onstage persona/alternate identity Lady Obscuria and slightly editing that basic form.
Whiskey A gargoyle bartender at the Birdcage.
Bartender Confidant: Whiskey makes it very clear in volume 48 that a good portion of her job is providing an "unbiased ear for a customer who needs it."
Butch Lesbian: Whiskey has a short hairstyle, wears exclusively masculine clothing, and is in a relationship with Birdcage dancer Faith.
Mistaken Death Confirmation: Angel upon seeing Whiskey, a gargoyle, for the first time confuses her for having been petrified by the latter's gorgon girlfriend Faith.
Faith, a gorgon, is rather attractive despite the snake hair and petrifying ability.
Half-Human Hybrid: Well, not exactly half, but Angel apparently has siren ancestry separated by a few generations.
Maya welcomes Angel to live at the Birdcage no strings attached almost immediately after meeting them, and it seems likely this isn't the first time she's done something like this.
Mama Bear: May the gods have mercy on any poor fool who even tangentially messes with one of Maya's loved ones, for Maya certainly won't
Really 700 Years Old: Supporting material shows she's old enough to remember (and miss) the days of at least one of the Mesoamerican empires. Considering the last of these ended around the late 1500s, this would imply she's well over four hundred years old at a bare minimum, and likely far older.
Team Mom: Maya is shown to be very protective and caring towards those who live in the Birdcage despite the fact that none of them are even remotely related to her.
Telepathy: Is implied to have some kind of eye-based version of this when she presumably gleans Angel's entire life story just by looking into their eyes.
The Ageless: Much like Wyllm, Maya has been alive for hundreds of years and still looks like she's middle aged.
she is a kukulkan in human form
Mina:She's a heavily muscled chimera and towers over most people.
Berserk Button: Wasting or insulting the food she makes. When an unruly patron throws food at Angel, Gunter leaves it to Mina to dish out worst punishment than he ever could.
Bruiser with a Soft Center: Mina is an extremely strong and quick to anger woman, but whenever she's around her boyfriend Guy she shows herself to have an extremely loving and smitten side to her personality.
Percussive Therapy: Mina's idea of therapy is, at least in some part, tenderizing meat... with her fists
Guy:Mina's foodie boyfriend.
Big Beautiful Man: He's has a notably husky figure.
Big Eater: He seemingly goes to eat at the Birdcage almost everyday.
Big Prick, Big Problems: Guy's "little guy" is apparently so big it causes Mina, who is far from a small person, to panic.
Obsessed with Food: Guy is very much a foodie, something Mina definitely appreciates.
The Snack Is More Interesting: Mina once offered to make out with him only for him to say he's more interested in finishing the pizza he was eating. Mina, who made the pizza, found this far more enamoring
Eliza A goblin (figuratively and literally) barista currently dating Aric.
Aric: a ice Jotun farmhand who's brothers with Gunter, currently dating Eliza.
It's implied that Aric did something or held some position in jotunheim he and Gunter hail from which he's incredibly ashamed of, to the point the reason he doesn't initially call Eliza when she writes her number all over the coffee box he brought to the farm is that he thinks she deserves better than him.
Gunter:A fire jotun who works as a Bouncer at the Birdcage. He's in a three-way relationship with Angel and Delia.
His skin is coal black with various orange veins all over his body he sports a tuft of black hair with two brown horns that face backwards
Bouncer: His official role at the Birdcage.
Elemental Powers: Downplayed, while Gunter isn't shown to have access to full on pyromancy, he is confirmed to have very powerful heat generation capabilities.
Gentle Giant: Despite his immense physical size and strength, Gunter is routinely shown to be an absolute gentleman with a heart of gold, even blushing nervously when Angel finally works up the courage to ask him on a date.
Tall, Dark, and Handsome: A very accurate descriptor for Gunter, repeated almost verbatim by Delia in response to Angel's very visible reaction to seeing him for the first time.
Delia :A wingless siren(based off a harpy)that dances at the Birdcage. She's in a three-way relationship with Gunter and Angel.
Daddy's Girl: Delia is very close with her adoptive father Wyllm.
She has short red hair that is primarily worn in with small twin braids in the front
She has scaled arms and legs like a harpy
Extreme Libido: Downplayed, Delia, like other sirens, gets extremely horny during spring, but the effect doesn't seem to last beyond then and her libido isn't nearly as extreme outside of this period.
Fictional Disability: Delia, despite being a siren, doesn't have wings because they were cut off at the hands of an implied demihuman-trafficking operation when she was
Happily Adopted: Wyllm isn't her biological father, having rescued her from a demihuman trafficking operation when she was young, and the two have a very positive relationship.
The world presented in the Mythed Up universe appears to be very much like ours, except mythological and fantasy based creatures began to appear hundreds of years ago (mainly after an event called "the Ripple") and society has (mostly) accepted them as part of society.
The vast majority of characters in Mythed Up are LGBTQ+ in some shape or form.
Kinsley, Cynthia, Faith, and Whiskey are lesbians.
Delia, Eliza, and Sally are bi
Centaur trainer Lou is trans
Angel is genderfluid and pan
Gunter and Aric are pan
The DPD (Department of Protection for Demi-humans) is a law enforcement agency that specializes in cracking down on S.H Trafficking. They have a sister organization that deals in the poaching of magical animals.
Delia mentions that there are laws that heavily regulate the use of Siren Song, though it hasn't been enforced much due to sirens discovering Tinder.
Members of the "DPD" (Department of Protection for Demi-humans) have shades of this. Performing investigations and sting operations against individuals or groups who abuse and exploit magical creatures.
Something happened in the past that caused the Mythical and Magical to start bleeding into our world. What exactly that something is, we do not know yet.
Post-Modern Magik: The DPD has shown interesting applications of this trope; from stickers that apply magical affects in application (such as healing or glamours), to helicopters that have sigils and runes etched into their blades so the can function as large, mobile spell circles.
Profiling: A cop that stops Eliza on the street makes it clear after he starts walking away he believes her status as a goblin makes her more likely to be a criminal
One store has imposed an additional fee for demihuman customers, supposedly to help deal with the issues of providing products for demihumans... despite the government already handling that.
Commune: The Birdcage could arguably qualify as one, given that it's implied Maya asks little of those who live there financially (if she asks anything at all) and the members are more than comfortable living together and helping each other out
The Birdcage, the primary setting of the strip and home for a good portion of its protagonists, is rather impressive for a nightclub, especially in regards to its residential quarters. Justified in-universe as it's shown that the owner Maya is capable of controlling and rearranging the building itself like its nothing.
