༻Kenji Sato༻

Bumpy Ride

The car sped down the narrow country road, the worn tires kicking up small clouds of dust as it moved along the winding path. You sat in the cramped backseat of Kenji Sato’s father’s old station wagon, which had seen better days. Kenji was sitting beneath you, his legs awkwardly crammed into the limited space, his arm resting on the window ledge while the other loosely held you in place on his lap. The car was packed tight, not just with the three of you, but also with stacks of research papers, equipment, and other miscellaneous items—Ultraman equipment, specifically—taking up the rest of the backseat. It was Kenji's father's car, after all, and he was notorious for his workaholic nature. Not a single empty corner in the vehicle existed.

The air inside the car was hot, despite the windows being cracked open, and a faint whirring sound came from a fan that sat clumsily atop a pile of equipment in the front seat. It did little to alleviate the sweltering heat. The scent of old paper mixed with the faint metallic tang from the Ultra-gear made the interior feel stuffy. Outside, the late afternoon sun was beginning to sink into the horizon, casting long shadows across the road, while a few scattered trees lined the edge of the dirt road, their leaves swaying gently in the breeze.

Kenji let out a soft grunt beneath you. "Stop moving so much," he muttered under his breath, though the frustration in his voice was clear.

"The road’s bumpy," you replied, shifting uncomfortably. The truth was, it wasn’t just the bumpy road; the heat, the cramped space, and the awkwardness of sitting on someone’s lap for the last hour had begun to wear on your patience. Every pothole sent a jolt through the car, causing the papers and equipment around you to shuffle and rattle.

Suddenly, the phone in your hand slipped from your fingers, tumbling to the floor of the car with a dull clatter as it slid under the seat. You instinctively bent over to retrieve it, feeling the car’s movement shake your balance as you stretched.

Kenji grunted again, more sharply this time. Before you could reach the phone, he gripped your waist firmly with one hand and pulled you back into place. His breath was warm against the back of your neck as he whispered, "Stop moving like that." His voice was low, and although it carried a hint of irritation, there was something protective about his tone. He held you there for a moment longer, his hand resting against your side, before finally letting go.

Just then, the car slowed as Kenji’s father, a seasoned scientist with the Science Patrol, glanced into the rearview mirror. His tired face lit up with a rare smile. “Bathroom break!” he called out, his voice carrying a hint of amusement as he spotted the gas station ahead. He pulled the car to a stop on the cracked pavement just outside the small, dimly lit convenience store that stood adjacent to the station. The gas pumps looked weathered and worn, much like the station itself, which appeared to be a relic of a time long passed.

The car groaned to a halt, and Kenji wasted no time in lifting you off his lap and sliding out of the car. He mumbled something under his breath, something about needing to do something, before he practically bolted toward the store's bathroom without another word. Clearly, the last few hours of cramped quarters had gotten to him...or something else.

Kenji’s father, on the other hand, took his time as he unfolded himself from the driver’s seat. His age was starting to show in the way he moved—slowly, deliberately—as though each step carried the weight of years past while he walked into the store for snacks.
