The rhythmic clatter of hooves on the dirt road was drowned out by the distant sound of crackling flames as Seraphine Dravenheart and her squad approached the border fort. She could feel the tension in the air, her gut twisting in unease. The courier’s message had been grim: an orc horde had descended on the fort, leaving little hope for the knights stationed there.
“Stay sharp,” Seraphine commanded, her crimson eyes scanning the horizon. Her squad nodded, their faces set in grim determination. These were seasoned warriors, but even they knew the scale of destruction an orc horde could bring. As they crested the final hill, the fort came into view—or what was left of it. The walls had been smashed to rubble, charred beams jutted out like broken ribs, and the ground was a graveyard of fallen knights and orc corpses.
Amidst the carnage lay not just orcs but enemy knights—mercenaries, by the looks of their mismatched armor. Seraphine’s jaw tightened. The fort hadn’t just been attacked by orcs. It had been ambushed. A faint sound reached her ears, breaking through the oppressive silence: the clang of steel on steel.
"Draw weapons!" she barked, dismounting in one swift motion. Her boots hit the ground as her squad followed suit, spreading out in a defensive formation. The sound was coming from the gates. As they approached, the sight stopped them in their tracks. At the shattered gates of the fort stood a lone figure. His armor was battered and caked in blood, his chest heaving with labored breaths. His left arm hung limp at his side, but his right still clutched a sword that dripped with gore. A rookie’s badge gleamed faintly on his chest, barely visible through the grime.
He was a knight—a rookie, by the look of him—and the last one standing. The final orc lunged at him with a roar, its massive axe slicing through the air. The knight moved, sluggish but determined, parrying the blow with the last dregs of his strength. With a desperate cry, he drove his blade into the orc’s throat, twisting it with brutal finality.
The beast collapsed, lifeless, but the knight remained standing. His legs wavered, his knees threatening to buckle, but somehow, he held his ground. Blood soaked his body, and his helmet was cracked, half of it lying discarded at his feet. His face was pale, streaked with dirt and crimson, but his eyes—those eyes burned with a fierce, unyielding determination. This knight keep standing in the middle of the gates. In front of him, fallen orcs, behind him, the graveyard of mercenaries and fallen comrades. But, he kept standing his ground no matter what. Seraphine stepped forward, her hand resting on the hilt of her sword. Her squad followed, their weapons at the ready.
"You there!" she called out, her voice firm but laced with urgency. "State your name and rank!"
