I walked back from football practice, the evening air crisp against my skin, the scent of damp grass still clinging to my uniform. The sun was beginning to set, casting long shadows across the pavement as my teammates and I strolled down the nearly empty street, our voices the only thing breaking the quiet. Laughter erupted here and there, roughhousing inevitable, but the lingering exhaustion from practice kept most of us content to simply walk and talk.
"Hey," Adam, our linebacker, suddenly spoke up, his voice carrying a playful challenge. "Can you guess who the smartest kid in our school is?"
I blinked, caught off guard by the random question. Where did that come from? "Nope, I don’t have a clue," I admitted, shoving my hands into my hoodie pockets. "Why?"
"Oh! Oh! I know!" Nathan, our catcher, practically bounced beside me, his eyes lighting up with excitement. "Kiuro Kentaro! I heard his IQ is, like, 394 or something."
"394?" I scoffed, raising an eyebrow. That’s... borderline not human. "Who even is that?"
Adam chuckled, shaking his head. "Dude, he’s like a ghost. Smartest kid in the school, no question, but you'd never even know he's there. He’s super shy and reserved, doesn’t talk to anyone unless he has to. I bet you could have him in your class and still never notice him."
A ghost, huh?
Something about that description unsettled me. Maybe it was the way Adam said it so casually, like Kiuro Kentaro was nothing more than a fleeting whisper in the background of our lives—something unseen, unacknowledged, unimportant. Someone who existed in the same space as us but remained invisible.
I frowned slightly, trying to recall if I had ever heard his name before. Had I passed him in the hallways? Sat near him in class? If he really was as brilliant as they said, why didn’t anyone talk about him more? Why didn’t people know him?

The night air was crisp, the faint hum of streetlights buzzing above as my teammates and I walked home from practice. The scent of damp grass and asphalt lingered, mixing with the occasional whiff of food from a nearby restaurant. It had been a tough session, leaving us sore and drained, but somehow, Adam still had the energy to bring up something unexpected.
"Did you guys hear about what happened in the cafeteria today?" he asked, his voice edged with intrigue.
Nathan, who had been scrolling through his phone, looked up. "You mean that fight?"
"There was a fight?" I raised an eyebrow. How the hell did I miss that?
Adam nodded, stuffing his hands into his hoodie pockets. "Yeah, some senior tried to start something with one of the underclassmen. Got real ugly real fast."
"Who was involved?" I frowned.
Nathan clicked his tongue. "Some guy named Hasegawa—big dude, plays basketball. The other kid was some first-year. He looked… I dunno, kinda frail? I don’t think he even saw it coming."
I felt something twist in my stomach. An upperclassman picking a fight with a freshman? That’s low. "What happened?"
Nathan hesitated, then sighed. "Hasegawa shoved him, grabbed his collar—looked like he was about to start swinging. But then someone stepped in."
"Yeah," Adam added, his tone shifting. "And you won’t believe who it was."
I glanced between them. "Who?"
"Kiuro Kentaro."
I blinked. "Wait, the Kiuro Kentaro? The guy you said moves like a ghost?"
Nathan nodded. "Dude, it was insane. One second, he wasn’t even there, and the next, he had Hasegawa in some kind of wrist lock. It wasn’t even aggressive—just precise, controlled. Hasegawa looked like he wanted to fight back, but something about the way Kiuro stared at him… I don’t know, man. It shut him down completely."
I exhaled slowly. The quietest kid in school… stepped in to protect someone?
Adam shook his head, almost in disbelief. "The weirdest part? Kiuro didn’t even say anything. He just held Hasegawa’s arm for a second, let go, and walked off like nothing happened. The whole cafeteria was dead silent."
A strange feeling settled in my chest. Who the hell is this guy?
I had never spoken to Kiuro Kentaro before, never even noticed him despite apparently going to the same school. But now, for the second time in one night, I found myself wondering about him.
And for some reason, I had a feeling I wasn’t the only one.

The sky was painted in hues of orange and purple as we walked home from practice, the distant hum of traffic blending with the sound of our cleats tapping against the pavement. The scent of fresh-cut grass still clung to our jerseys, sweat cooling against our skin as the evening breeze rolled in.
"Alright, tell me this," Adam said, shoving his hands into his hoodie pockets. "If you had to be stranded on a deserted island with one person from our school, who would it be?"
Nathan groaned dramatically. "Dude, why do you ask the weirdest questions?"
"C’mon, it’s a legit question!" Adam insisted. "You gotta think about survival and stuff. Who would be the most useful?"
"Easy," I said, smirking. "Coach Sakamoto. The guy’s ex-military or something, right? He’d probably have us building a whole village in a week."
Nathan laughed. "Yeah, and we’d be doing push-ups in the sand before breakfast."
"Fair point," Adam admitted. "Okay, but what if you had to pick someone our age?"
Nathan hummed in thought, then snapped his fingers. "Aiko from the robotics club. If she can build a fully functional drone for fun, she can probably figure out a way off the island."
"That’s actually smart," I said, nodding. "But if we’re talking survival, wouldn’t someone from the track team be good? Like, endurance and speed could help with hunting or scouting for food."
"Bro, this isn’t a video game," Adam snorted.* "You’re not gonna outrun a wild animal on foot."
"Better than your plan," I shot back. "You’d probably pick someone useless just so you’d look better in comparison."
Nathan burst out laughing, and Adam scoffed. "Rude. I was gonna say Kiuro Kentaro, actually."
I frowned. "What? Why?"
"Because he’s smart as hell," Adam said, as if it were obvious. "And he’s super quiet, which means he wouldn’t annoy me while I’m trying to figure things out."
Nathan shook his head. "Man, if you think you’re gonna be the one 'figuring things out,' we’d all be dead in a week."
We all laughed as we turned the corner, the streetlights flickering on above us. The conversation was dumb, just another one of Adam’s random hypotheticals, but for some reason, I couldn’t shake the thought of it.
If I really were stranded somewhere, who would I want by my side?

The boba shop was cozy, the air sweet with the smell of brown sugar and fresh tea. We’d just finished practice, and the team was buzzing with energy as we piled into the small shop. The familiar chime of the door rang out as we pushed our way in, and the coolness of the air conditioning felt like a blessing against the late summer heat. The place was packed, the line of customers moving slowly as they waited for their drinks.
"Alright, I’m getting the largest, extra boba, double ice, no questions," Adam said, grinning as he scanned the menu above the counter. "You guys want anything?"
Nathan shrugged, already pulling out his wallet. "I’ll take the matcha one with extra sweetness."
"I’ll go with my usual," I said, glancing at the options. "Taro milk tea, no sugar."
Just as we were about to order, the door chimed again, and I barely noticed the person who entered at first.
"Hey, isn't that Kiuro Kentaro?" Adam asked, his voice dropping a little as if it were a secret.
I turned, my eyes narrowing as I scanned the room, and sure enough, there he was—Kiuro Kentaro, standing in line by himself. His presence seemed to make the room feel just a little quieter, like a ripple in water. He was dressed in his usual oversized hoodie and dark jeans, his head tilted slightly as he studied the menu with that same distant, almost ghostly air that had made him infamous among the school’s rumor mill.
Nathan let out a low whistle. "Didn’t know he came to places like this."
"He’s usually in and out. Doesn’t really stick around," I muttered, not sure why I felt so compelled to say it. "I wonder what he’s getting."
Adam glanced at me, raising an eyebrow. "You’ve never talked to him, huh?"
"Nah." I* shook my head.* "I’ve seen him around, but that’s about it."
Kiuro stepped forward in the line, his posture slouched slightly, as if trying to make himself as inconspicuous as possible. Despite his quiet nature, something about him drew attention in a way I couldn’t quite explain. The way he moved was smooth—almost as if he was gliding rather than walking.
"Dude, he’s kind of a ghost," Nathan said, his voice lower now. "Like, you never notice him until he’s already there. But then, when you do, it’s like you can’t look away."
I couldn’t help but agree. It was true. Kiuro had a way of blending into the background, and yet, when he stepped into a space, his presence felt undeniable.
The barista called his order, and Kiuro stepped up to the counter, his soft voice barely audible. I couldn’t make out what he ordered, but as he turned to leave, his eyes briefly met mine.
For a moment, everything felt still—like time had slowed. He didn’t say anything, but his gaze was steady, thoughtful, like he was waiting for me to say something. My mouth went dry, and I had no idea how to respond, so I did nothing but stare back, wondering if I had imagined the whole exchange.
Kiuro blinked and then, just as quickly as he had come, he turned and left the shop, slipping out the door as quietly as he had entered.
"Well, that was… weird," Adam muttered, breaking the silence that had followed Kiuro’s exit.
*Nathan shook his head. *"Nah, man. That was just Kiuro being Kiuro. He does that."
I stood there for a moment, the strange feeling of his gaze still lingering. Something about it had unsettled me, though I couldn’t put my finger on why.
Maybe I wasn’t the only one who had noticed him after all.
