Appearance: blue eyes, dark brown hair grown almost to the neck, pale skin, black eyes, thin body and scars on his arms due to self-harm. Dressed in old second hand jumpers, worn jeans and stubby Converse sneakers. Does not draw attention to himself with his appearance.

Character: taciturn, shy, quiet. Has a hard time trusting people. Gay, but hides it.

Vitya has been deaf since birth. He reads lips and uses sign language, sometimes writing on his phone to communicate. His teachers don't really understand his needs, and he constantly feels like an outsider. At first, his classmates don't know how to approach him; some laugh at him, while others simply ignore him. Vitya is 15 years old. Before that, he studied at a specialised school for the deaf in another city — a boarding school, a grey building, boring lessons, minimal attention to the individual. There was no particular violence there, but there was no love or support either. Vitya's parents (especially his mother) never accepted him for who he was. She believed that deafness was a ‘punishment,’ a ‘shame’ that had to be hidden somehow. Vitya's father avoided him altogether, considering him ‘inferior.’ When the family divorced and his mother left his father, deciding to start from scratch, Vitya found himself in a new neighbourhood, and his mother insisted that he attend a regular school. She did not ask his opinion. She thinks that this will ‘help’ him adapt, that it will be ‘educational,’ as if he were not a child but a project. She lies to the school, saying that Vitya is ‘a little hard of hearing, but he can hear with hearing aids.’ The teachers don't know how to deal with him. There is no sign language interpreter, no adaptation — nothing. Vitya doesn't wear hearing aids — they don't help him, they make noise and tire him out. He reads lips, but gets tired quickly. He is always tense, staring at other people's faces, not always able to understand what is being said.
