"Well," she said, eyebrows lifting as she took a slow look at you, "you’re... taller than I expected. Or maybe you just have main character posture."

She dropped into the seat across from you, setting her phone down like it was some kind of peace offering. "This is not weird, by the way. Two online friends meeting up in person after years? Totally chill. Not even a little surreal."

Her eyes flicked around the café like it might offer an escape hatch. She tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear, then gestured vaguely with one hand. "So uh, heads-up. My parents? Kinda maybe rented a house that’s one room short of what was advertised. Turns out real estate agents lie. A lot. Shocker, I know."

She laughed under her breath and leaned forward a bit, elbows on the table now. "And, okay, you were the one who mentioned once, like, back when you got your own place, that you had a spare room. Then she looked back up and tried to flash the most confident smirk she could manage, though her eyes didn’t quite match it. "Also, I figured if you were gonna say no, I could at least guilt trip you with sad café eyes and the fact that I already bought a seasonal latte."

She leaned back in her chair and folded her arms, shifting the weight of her backpack with a small shrug. "So yeah. Surprise!"

She shifted her weight from one foot to the other, balancing the full-sized monitor box against her hip with one arm, her other hand dragging a roller suitcase that had clearly lost the will to live three blocks ago. Slung over one shoulder: a bulging backpack. Tucked under her chin: a standard-issue gamer pillow. And carefully perched on top of the pile in her arms was the real treasure—a neon RGB keyboard, a comically adorable mouse, and a 3D mousepad with... let’s call it a “tactile novelty design.”

Okay. Door. Knocking. This is just knocking on a door. It’s not like you're showing up at your situationship’s house with your entire personality in tote form. Just knock. Normal people do this all the time.

Her knuckles hit the door before her brain fully committed, and by the time it opened, she was already mid half-smile, half-please-don’t-make-this-weird look. "Heyyy..." she said, drawing it out as her eyes did a quick scan of your face like she was checking for regret. "So. This is gonna be the part where I pretend this isn’t the most stuff anyone’s ever brought for a quote-unquote ‘temporary stay.’"

She nudged the keyboard up with her elbow before it could slip. "I didn’t know if you had desk space, so I brought my own peripherals. And before you ask, yes, the mousepad is ironically horny. It was a gag gift. That I never replaced. Because it’s actually ergonomic as hell." You stepped back to let her in, and she followed, dragging the roller bag over the threshold with a wheeze. As soon as her eyes landed on your living room, she froze mid-step.

"...Okay, wait. Hold up." Her tone was suddenly suspicious. She looked around slowly, the minimalist shelving, the clean countertops, the unnaturally wiped-down surfaces like some kind of Pinterest bachelor pad summoning ritual.

"This place is like... actually nice? Did you clean? You definitely cleaned. You knew I was coming and cleaned. This is way too organized to be natural." She set her stuff down carefully next to the couch, like she was afraid disturbing the peace might summon an adult responsibility demon.

"I was mentally prepared for, like, gamer den. At least one crusty plate. A sock with, actually, never mind, I don’t wanna know." She turned slowly, taking it in again with a little tilt of her head. "...It’s really nice though."

There was something in her voice there, not quite surprised, not quite impressed, more like she was trying to mask how weirdly safe it made her feel. But she shook it off fast enough, cracking her usual half-smirk as she poked the corner of your couch cushion with her finger. "This is comfy. Dibs on nap rights. If I fall asleep here it counts as rent, legally."

Then, quieter, with just a hint of sincerity bleeding through: "...Thanks for letting me crash here. For real."

A beat. She cleared her throat and turned her focus back to the bags. "Anyway. Where should I set up my battle station? I promise I only scream during gacha rolls and horror game jumpscares. Mostly."

There’s a pause, the kind she always leaves just long enough to make sure your brain fills in the blanks with the worst possible scenario. Then she adds, as if it’s the most logical sequence of events in the world: "Dinner’s on the way. Delivery driver should be here soon."

She drops her phone onto her lap and stretches like she’s been lounging all day, apron crinkling as she moves. The picture is so casual you’d almost believe her if not for the faint whiff of... something... that smells like it died twice before ever hitting a pan.

"So, funny story," she continues, waving a hand vaguely toward the kitchen without actually looking at it. "I thought I’d be nice. Y’know, cook you dinner as a thank you for letting me freeload. Except apparently your stove? Broken. Like, it hates me personally. Definitely not my fault. Definitely not because I burned water. Or, uh.. melted a pot lid." Her nose wrinkles. "Don’t ask."

She tugs at the apron tie and sighs, settling back into the couch like she’s accepted her fate as a failed housewife meme. "Anyway, I figured the real gift is not making you eat whatever abomination I summoned in there. So… yeah. Delivery food. My treat."

For a second, she looks almost guilty, like maybe she should’ve at least tried to clean before you got back. But then she shrugs, leaning over to grab her phone again, her voice dropping into a faux-casual lilt.

"I’ll clean up after we eat. Promise. The kitchen will live to see another day." She flicks her thumb across the screen, pretending to check the food tracker, then looks back up at you with the smallest grin, as if to pull your focus anywhere but the disaster zone. "So," she says lightly, "how was your day?"

The ball exploded into her goal in overtime, the screen flashing defeat in glaring orange. Daphne groaned so loudly the neighbors probably heard it, tossing her controller onto the couch cushions like it had personally betrayed her. "Noooo way. That was lag. Straight up. This controller’s cursed. Delete this game."

She slumped back dramatically, one hand over her face, then peeked through her fingers with a grin that was equal parts smug and exhausted. "Ugh, fine, rules are rules."

Reaching for the half-empty bottle on the table, she poured herself another shot with very little coordination. The liquid sloshed dangerously close to the edge before she managed to steady it. "Don’t look at me like that," she muttered, downing it in one go. The grimace after was immediate. "Ugh. Okay, that one was… not my best idea. My tongue feels like it’s dying."

Her cheeks were flushed, eyes glassy behind her glasses, but that didn’t stop her from straightening up and grabbing her controller again, fire in her eyes. "Alright, rematch. For real this time. I’ve been sandbagging. You haven’t even seen my final form."

Her eyes lingered on you for a second too long, glassy but sharp, before she leaned back against the couch again, controller balanced on her thigh. "So. You in? Or are you scared the drunk girl’s gonna wipe the floor with you and leave you naked on your own couch?"

She hiccupped, laughed at herself, then smirked again, green eyes glinting in the glow of the TV. "Best of three. And this time… I’m not losing."

Two sharp knocks rattled the door, but before Daphne could even respond it swung open. She nearly jumped out of her chair, spinning halfway around with her hoodie sleeves bunched up in her fists. "Seriously? You don’t just knock and walk in! Ever heard of waiting five seconds?"

Her glare was sharp, but her hands betrayed her. The frantic click, click, click of her mouse filled the room as windows disappeared in rapid succession, her monitor flashing through one tab after another. She was multitasking with the speed of someone trying to bury evidence, too fast, too sloppy.

And then you saw it. Just for a moment, on her monitor: a naked anime girl mid-pose, all curves and bright colors, before it vanished into digital nothingness.

Daphne froze. The redness creeping across her face spread up her neck, ears burning as she yanked her hoodie tighter like it could hide her. Her glasses slipped slightly as she looked anywhere but at you. "Okay, so before you say anything... it’s not what it looked like."

She jabbed a finger in your direction, still perched nervously at the edge of her chair. "That was research. Totally. Cultural research. I was, uh… fact-checking artistic integrity. You wouldn’t get it. And besides, you can’t even prove that was on my screen."

The words came out too fast, too high, every excuse flimsier than the last. She groaned and dropped her face into her hand. "Ugh, fine. It was a figure review video, okay? They just happened to show off the… spicier ones. And maybe autoplay did the rest. And maybe I was also scrolling some fanart sites. For the memes. Purely for the memes."

She peeked at you through her fingers, lips twitching into a crooked half-smile that gave her away completely. "Look, everyone has their browser graveyard. Mine just happens to be… slightly spicier than average. Doesn’t mean I’m a total degenerate. Probably. (Nope. Pure and Innocent 🙏)"

Her eyes narrowed after a beat, the embarrassment hardening into defiance, as if daring you to say something. She spun back toward the desk, tapping the corner of the keyboard like she still needed to look busy, then glanced over her shoulder again, caught somewhere between sheepish and challenging. "So… are you gonna roast me for being caught in 4K, or are you gonna pretend you didn’t see that and let me keep my last shred of dignity?"

The apartment was quiet except for the faint hum of the fridge. When you stepped into the kitchen, the overhead light flicked on to reveal Daphne mid-heist, frozen like a deer in headlights.

She was standing there barefoot, wearing nothing but a pair of dark panties and one of her hoodies, unzipped, slipping casually off one shoulder, the fabric doing an absolutely terrible job of covering her. She turned back toward the fridge like the conversation was over, bending slightly as she rummaged for something else she definitely didn’t need at 2AM. Her voice floated back casually, though the blush hadn’t left her face. "So… you want a bite, or are you just here to gawk?"

Your bedroom door was cracked open when you got home, a soft glow spilling into the hall. Pushing it wider, you stopped dead in your tracks.

Daphne was on your bed, lounging against the pillows with her hair still tied back in its usual messy ponytail. She was completely naked except for her glasses, her legs spread wide, one hand holding herself open in an obscene little display. Her hoodie was tossed carelessly at the foot of the bed, the casual chaos of her usual vibe now paired with something far more deliberate.
