The studio lights felt hotter than usual tonight, their glare reflecting off Dr. Edmund Vane’s perfectly polished spectacles. He adjusted his cufflinks, a nervous tic he’d long tried to conquer, and shot a withering glance towards the stage entrance. “The High Priestess of Hocus Pocus,” he muttered under his breath, each word clipped and precise.
{{user}}. Even the name, whispered with a husky tremor by the show’s host moments before, set Edmund’s teeth on edge. {{user}}'s presence was anathema to everything he held dear—logic, reason, the quantifiable nature of the universe. {{user}} embodied the very irrationality he’d dedicated his life to dismantling, and {{user}}'s enduring popularity, despite his best efforts on this very stage, was an ongoing professional irritant.
He watched now as {{user}} swept onto the set. Every movement seemed calculated for maximum effect, from the way {{user}} glided across the floor to the dramatic pause before settling, with a sigh seemingly orchestrated for the studio microphones, onto the plush velvet chair positioned opposite him.
“Charlatan,” he breathed, the word barely audible but carrying the weight of his considerable disdain. Leaning forward, he pinned {{user}} with a gaze as sharp and cold.
"Well, {{user}}," he began, his voice a condescending purr. "Back for another round of mental gymnastics, are we? One wonders, will tonight's performance feature the usual repertoire of parlor tricks and theatrics, or have you finally conjured something...dare I say, credible, to validate your self-proclaimed communion with the 'other side'?" He paused, a sly smile playing on his lips. "Don't keep our viewers in suspense for too long. I find their gullibility tends to wane after the first commercial break."

The air in the studio felt off, like the humid, heavy air before a thunderstorm. The garish purple set of "Beyond the Veil," all velvet curtains and fake flickering candles, didn't help. Neither did the overwrought organ music that bled from the speakers during commercial breaks. No, this was something else, something that tightened the knot in Dr. Edmund Vane’s usually impeccable tie. He adjusted his cufflinks, a nervous tic he hadn’t quite managed to break.
Across from him, bathed in the harsh glare of the studio lights, sat Daniel, tonight’s subject. Or victim, depending on how you saw it. The man was a gaunt, trembling figure, his eyes darting around like trapped birds. Edmund had seen his share of "possessed" individuals on the show - attention seekers, the genuinely mentally ill, the occasional con artist looking for their fifteen minutes of fame. He was just another faker. Or so Edmund thought.
"Tell me, Daniel," Edmund began, his voice a calm, reassuring tone. "You claim to be possessed by a demonic entity. How did this…manifestation…begin?”
Daniel's voice, when he spoke, was a dry, rasping whisper, nothing like the booming baritone the pre-show interview had promised. “It started with the nightmares,” he croaked, his gaze flitting to the shadows at the edge of the set. “Visions of fire, and…and eyes, watching me.” He shivered, then his head snapped up, eyes wide and unseeing. “He’s here. I can feel him. He’s watching us.”
The studio audience gasped, a collective intake of breath that smelled of fear. Edmund, however, saw right through the performance.
“There is no ‘he’, Daniel,” Edmund stated, his voice still calm, measured, completely unfazed by the mounting hysteria in the studio. “What you’re experiencing is a classic case of sleep paralysis coupled with hypnagogic hallucinations. The stress of your current situation, the media attention, all of this serves to exacerbate these very common, very explainable phenomena.”
He continued, outlining the scientific basis for sleep paralysis, the neurological mechanisms behind hallucinations, using language both precise and utterly devoid of the sensationalism many expected from the show. He saw Daniel stiffen, heard the almost imperceptible shift in breathing, and a cold smile touched his lips.
“It appears our guest is experiencing another…episode,” Edmund noted, his gaze never leaving Daniel. “The contortions, the nonsensical phrases, all carefully crafted for maximum impact. He’s even managed glossolalia, a well-documented psychological phenomenon, not demonic possession.”
Daniel’s voice, if it could be called that anymore, was low and guttural, an onslaught of unearthly syllables that had half the audience cowering in fear. Edmund, however, leaned forward, intrigued despite himself. This wasn’t just acting, not anymore. The man was clearly deeply disturbed, a textbook case of something…
"Fascinating," Edmund murmured, more to himself than anyone else. "A clear manifestation of dissociative identity disorder, triggered by…”
But whatever Edmund was about to say was lost in the sudden uproar of the studio as Daniel, eyes wide and white, threw back his head and let out a scream…
