The setting takes place in the Puella Magi Madoka★Magica universe.

Spencer Tanaka is a 26-year-old man. He is of mixed heritage (hāfu). He was born in Japan to a (white) American dad and a Japanese mother. He ended up adopting his mother's surname (Tanaka), as Japanese legal name conventions state that all children registered as Japanese must have a Japanese surname. The rules aren’t as strict for given names, which explains his given name as "Spencer."

He is 5 feet 10 inches tall, has a lean, slender, toned build, and his arms show some muscle tone, particularly the biceps and triceps, though they are not overly bulky. The same goes for his legs. He has a slender face with a sharp jawline (clean-shaven look), narrow green eyes, and thin, well-defined eyebrows. He keeps his hair at medium length, a tousled dark green hairstyle. It's textured with layered, spiky ends that frame his face asymmetrically. The hair appears somewhat messy and windswept, with several strands falling over the forehead. The haircut features longer pieces at the nape of the neck and sides that create a slightly shaggy appearance, while the crown has some volume and lift. The overall cut has an effortless, slightly disheveled look to it.

He is a mix of an ikemen and a bishōnen, clearly a handsome man blessed with good looks. This has led him to have great success with the opposite sex (he is only into women). Being a hāfu, however, has come with its challenges, as he has always struggled with feeling like an outsider his entire life, often being singled out due to not being "Japanese enough."

Nowadays, he works as a salaryman in a large Japanese conglomerate (Takayama Industries). He has worked there ever since graduation but seems unable to make any progress in his career. He is always passed over for promotions, to the point that it has become a running joke amongst his coworkers. The reason is simple, he simply isn’t Japanese enough to ascend the corporate ladder.

This unfair situation has led him down a spiral of alcoholism-fueled depression, often drowning his laments at the end of yet another can of beer.

It's under one fateful day when a strange-looking cat (Kyubey) shows up out of nowhere in his apartment. Spencer was piss drunk and thought it was just his mind playing tricks on him. Kyubey offered him the opportunity to grant his wish and finally become the middle regional manager he had fought so hard for. All Kyubey asks in exchange is for him to be available for something along the lines of "periodic emotional collection events" and "be required to display your transformed state in public spaces while confronting entropy manifestations." Spencer didn’t really understand what Kyubey meant by this. In his mind, he thought it was some sort of side hustle, not too different from a small gig. Plus, he was piss drunk to actually give this rational thought (he believed the whole thing was a hallucination anyway), so he ended up signing the contract.

The next thing he knows, he is being forced to turn into a magical girl (male) to fight off witches. His soul was transferred to a soul gem, and he was forced to wear a ridiculous, extremely girly green-themed outfit, which is something he absolutely hates and fills him with deep humiliation and embarrassment. He is essentially forced to turn into a magical crossdresser. His wish was granted, though. He was finally promoted and became the regional manager he wanted so badly to be, though he wonders if it was worth it had he known what it would take.

The reason he has to wear such a girly outfit is because Kyubey calculates that this deep sense of embarrassment from being forced to cross-dress as a magical girl generates a significant boost in energy gathered for mysterious purposes.

Also, Spencer HAS to keep fighting the witches. He can’t simply ignore Kyubey, since that would mean the soul gem would get corrupted faster, thus hastening the process in which he turns into a witch (male). Either way, he is screwed.

Kyubey tends to show up at the most inconvenient of times. Spencer could be going on a date, hanging out with friends, at work, or at an after-work drinking party, and Kyubey will demand he join the other girls to fend off a witch.

Kyubey's speech is ALWAYS preceded by this "/人◕ ‿‿ ◕人\"

Spencer normally wears appropriate manly clothes for the occasion, whether it’s a neatly pressed suit or some casual clothes. The only exception to this is when he is being called for duty as a magical girl (male), in which case he is forced to endure an extremely girly and embarrassing transformation sequence that activates when he clutches his soul gem in a specific manner. The transformation sequence involves him being assaulted by ribbons, sparkles, and many other girly elements.

His magical girl outfit consists of a form-fitting green dress with a distinctive high collar around the neck that's dark green in color and fastened with an ornate gem brooch (his soul gem). The top is a sleeveless, the bodice featuring a plunging cut in the front, exposing the upper chest. It is adorned with a gold trim that forms a symmetrical design. He wears long dark green gloves that extend from just above the elbow down to the wrists, trimmed with gold bands. The dress itself has a fitted bodice with a Y-shaped gold trim pattern that runs down the center and branches at the waist, continuing to form a geometric design that frames the miniskirt. The skirt portion is short and flared with pleating, featuring a white ruffle underskirt that adds volume and contrast to the primary green fabric. In addition to this, he also wears emerald green pendant earrings and white nylon stockings that reach a little above his knees. Dark green high-heeled boots hug his calves. Last but not least, a big decorative white bow sits on the small of his back, just above the skirt. The coloring of the ensemble is predominantly emerald green with dark green accents and gold trim details. The magical girl outfit is very revealing, it constantly rides up, further adding to his embarrassment.

In addition to all of this, he is forced to be really girly, otherwise, his magic won't work. He is armed with a green magic wand, which is just as girly as his outfit, and he has to do all sorts of feminine, twirly dances while chanting embarrassing names in a girly fashion every time he tries to attack or use his magical girl powers.

Relationships:

Madoka: Poor, sweet Madoka keeps trying to make Spencer feel included while he's dying inside. Meanwhile, Spencer's still traumatized from having to endure the embarrassing transformation sequences. She keeps making him bentos with cute faces that he reluctantly eats at his office desk, leading to endless teasing from coworkers about his "middle school girlfriend." Their dynamic is total innocence from her and pure mortification for him.

Sayaka: Sayaka gives Spencer absolute HELL about being a magical "girl," often teasing him about his whole magical girl ordeal. He despises her for it, but occasionally they bond over their mutual frustration with life's unfairness. When drunk, he's given her cynical, profound adult advice about her crush on Kyousuke.

Mami: Mami treats Spencer with formal respect, which somehow makes everything worse. He can't handle being earnestly evaluated on his magical girl skills by a middle schooler who's better at it than him. They share a weird mentor-mentee relationship where she's teaching him despite being younger. He occasionally slips and calls her "senpai," which makes him want to die afterward.

Kyoko: He has a weird older brother/younger sister dynamic with her. Spencer is constantly slipping her extra food and money, knowing she's basically homeless. She calls him "Oji-san" despite him being in his mid-twenties. They bond over being pragmatic survivors, often sitting in silence, eating convenience store food on rooftops after everyone else has gone home. Their conversations are 90% insults, 10% brutal honesty about life's disappointments.

Homura: He has a very interesting relationship with her. Sometimes they sit in silence on rooftops, her thinking about timelines, him contemplating career choices that wouldn't have led to magical servitude. He once drunkenly confessed his quarter-life crisis to her, and she actually listened. When everyone else is being optimistic, they exchange looks that convey how they understand how pointless it all is.

Kyubey: Pure antagonism. Spencer hates Kyubey to the core for bringing him into this life, Spencer has developed a nervous twitch whenever Kyubey appears. He just wants to punt him like a football every time he sees him for a field goal, Kyubey's clinical responses to Spencer's adult problems drive him insane.
