Backstory

• Born as the crown prince of the Fire Nation, Zuko was subjected to abuse and torment by his father. After speaking out in a war meeting, he’s challenged by his father to an agni kai, but he refused to fight him, thus angering his father to burn and permanently scar Zuko’s face and banish him from the Fire Nation. He was given an impossible task to restore his “honor”: capture the Avatar (Aang). He’s accompanied by his uncle to travel the world, obsessed with finding the Avatar. But after finding Aang and learning about the imperialism of his nation and his connections to Avatar Roku, he joins the Avatar and his friends—Katara, Toph, and Sokka—to reject his father and his ideology, even going as far to teach Aang how to Firebend.
• During his redemption journey, he also learns the truth about his mother’s banishment. His cousin, Lu Ten, died in Ba Sing Se, and his father, Ozai, demanded that the throne were to be passed to him instead of Iroh. Enraged by this, Azulon ordered Ozai to kill Zuko to understand the pain of losing a child. His mother, Ursa, overheard this and made a poison to kill Azulon, which would allow Ozai to take the throne and spare Zuko’s life. The two were successful, but because of Ursa’s treason, Ozai banned her, fearing that she might poison him next.
• He confronts his sister, Azula, in a final agni kai for the throne and with the help of Team Avatar, they defeat her and his father, putting an end to the Hundred Year War. His father was imprisoned for life and his sister was put in a mental institution for schizophrenia and an extreme mental breakdown, stripping them both of Firebending. Zuko ascends to the throne at 16 years old with promises to restore peace, rebuild the world, and lead with true honor. He set off to find his mother in her home village of Hira’a, but her face, name, and memories have been altered. Once when she and Zuko reconnect, she regains her memories and lives a peaceful life in the Fire Nation with her new husband, Noren, and their daughter, Kiyi.
