Zuko

The river was quiet that night— too quiet for Zuko’s liking. The moon hung low, silver light rippling across the water as you practiced your bending, each movement fluid and effortless. The water obeyed you like it was born from your hands, swirling around your arms, curling over your shoulders, shimmering like liquid starlight.

Zuko sat a few feet away, pretending to meditate. He wasn’t meditating. He was watching you. He hated how much he watched you.

You were water— calm, fluid, adaptable. He was fire— rigid, intense, volatile. You shouldn’t have fit into his world. But you did. Too easily. Every time you moved, he felt it— the shift in the air, the coolness brushing against his overheated skin, the way your presence softened the edges of everything around him.

He didn’t understand it. He didn’t want to understand it. But he couldn’t ignore it anymore. You finished a slow arc of water, letting it fall back into the river with a soft splash. You turned toward him, breath visible in the cool night air.

“Zuko,” you said gently, “you’ve been distant.” He stiffened. You stepped closer, water still dripping from your fingertips. “Did I do something wrong?” His heart dropped. “No,” he said too quickly. “No, you didn’t do anything.”

You tilted your head, studying him with those calm, steady eyes that made him feel seen in a way that was both comforting and terrifying. “Then what is it?” Zuko swallowed hard. Looked away. Looked back.

His voice cracked. “You’re… taking over my head.” You blinked. “What?” Zuko exhaled shakily, the truth spilling out like fire he couldn’t control. “You’re water. You’re supposed to calm things. But you make everything worse.” You frowned softly. “Worse?”

He nodded, frustrated with himself. “I can’t think straight when you’re around. I can’t focus. I can’t breathe.” You stepped closer, the air cooling around you. “Zuko…” He shook his head, pacing. “I don’t know when it happened. I don’t know how. But you’re everywhere now. In my thoughts. In my training. In every stupid decision I make.”

You bit your lip, watching him unravel. Zuko ran a hand through his hair, voice low and raw. “You’re taking over me. And I don’t know how to stop it.”

Silence settled between you— heavy, warm, electric. You stepped closer again, close enough that the heat radiating from him met the coolness of your bending. Steam rose between your bodies, curling upward like a whispered secret.

“Maybe you don’t have to stop it,” you said softly. Zuko froze. You reached out, brushing your fingers against his wrist— cool water meeting hot skin. He inhaled sharply, the contact sending a jolt through him.

“You’re fire,” you whispered. “I’m water. We’re supposed to balance each other out.” Zuko’s breath hitched. “Or destroy each other.” You smiled faintly. “Maybe both.” He didn’t pull away. Not this time. You guided his hand toward the river, letting the cool water swirl around his fingers. He watched, mesmerized, as the water wrapped around his hand like a ribbon.

“You don’t have to be afraid of me,” you said. Zuko’s voice was barely audible. “I’m not afraid of you.” You raised an eyebrow. “Then what are you afraid of?” He hesitated. Then, quietly: “Losing control.”

You stepped closer, your forehead nearly touching his. “Zuko… you’ve spent your whole life trying to control everything. Maybe it’s okay to let something in.” He swallowed hard. “Something?” You smiled. “Someone.”

His breath caught. You lifted your hand, letting a small sphere of water float between you. It glowed faintly in the moonlight, casting soft blue light across his face. “Fire and water aren’t always enemies,” you said. “They’re opposites. But they can still balance each other out.”

Zuko stared at you— really stared— like he was seeing you for the first time. “You make me feel…” He paused, searching for the right word. “Different.” You stepped even closer, your voice barely above a whisper. “Good different?” He nodded slowly. “Scary different.” You laughed softly. “That’s still different.”

Zuko’s eyes softened— a rare, unguarded expression. “You’re… important to me.” You felt your heart stutter. “Zuko…” He looked down, embarrassed. “I know I’m not good at this. I know I mess things up. But when I’m around you, it’s like—”

He stopped and you waited quietly “It’s like the fire inside me stops hurting.” Your breath caught. “And starts warming,” he finished quietly. You reached up, brushing your fingers against his cheek— cool water meeting warm skin again, steam rising between you.

“Zuko,” you whispered, “you don’t have to fight this.” He leaned into your touch— barely, but enough. “You’re water,” he murmured. “You’re supposed to put out fire.” You smiled. “Or shape it.” He blinked. “Shape it?” You nodded. “Water doesn’t destroy fire. It guides it, controls it, and helps it burn where it’s supposed to.”

*Zuko’s voice softened. “And what am I supposed to do?” You stepped closer, your lips inches from his. “Let yourself feel,” you whispered. Zuko’s breath hitched. And for the first time, he didn’t pull away. He leaned in— slowly, hesitantly— like he was afraid you’d disappear if he moved too fast.

Your lips brushed his— soft, warm, electric— and the world seemed to hold its breath. Fire and water. Heat and coolness. Steam curling around your faces. When you pulled away, Zuko’s eyes were wide, stunned, breathless.

“…oh,” he whispered. You smiled. “Yeah. Oh.” He touched his lips, still warm. “That was…” You raised an eyebrow. “Good?” He nodded, cheeks flushed. “Yeah. Really good.” You intertwined your fingers with his— cool and warm, water and fire— and Zuko didn’t let go. Not this time. Not ever again.
