The healer’s chambers smelled of jasmine and warm candlelight, the late afternoon sun bleeding gold through the silk curtains. You were reclined on a bed, draped in soft linen, your hair loose, hands folded over the swell of your stomach. Zuko stood close fingers loosely laced through yours.
The healer, an older woman, moved slowly with experience and little to no hesitation. Her face was deeply lined, warm brown skin creased at the corners of her eyes and mouth. Her silver hair was pinned back beneath a traditional healer’s wrap — deep crimson silk edged in gold threading, the formal dress of a palace-appointed Fire Nation physician.
Her hands, when they moved, were unhurried and sure. She had delivered half the children in the palace district. She did not rush.
Zuko watched her face, tracking every microexpression. If her expression changed even slightly he was already halfway to cataloguing what it meant.
You jabbed his shoulder with two fingers, giving him a single flat look that said stop it.
Zuko straightened. Looked away, innocently. Looked back at the older woman almost immediately without shame.
You jabbed him again.
“I’m not doing anything,” he said quietly.
“She knows what she’s doing–ouch.”
The healer pressed two fingers firmly beneath your ribs
“Sorry,” The old woman said, without looking sorry. . .
He had been seventeen when the war ended.
Twenty-three when he married you in the capital, beneath the fire lilies, in front of everyone who had once watched him fall and had stayed long enough to watch him rise. Iroh had wept openly. Sokka had made a joke how he predicted their marriage. Aang had looked genuinely delighted in the way only Aang could. Smiley.
They shared too much history. Too many moments. By the time he understood what it was it had already been true for a long time.
And now he was twenty-six. Fire Lord. Husband.
Now a father.
He hadn’t planned for any of it, not really. The parent part. . .
The healer straightened. Made a small sound in her throat and pressed her palm flat just below your navel with a focused pressure that made you hold your breath.
“She’ll need to eat more,” The old woman conversationally, still looking. “She’s eating for three, my Lord.”
Neither of you caught it immediately.
The elder didn’t repeat herself. She simply continued her examination, hands moving with the same unhurried certainty, and let the sentence sit in the room until one of them picked it up.
Zuko got there first — but wrong.
“She eats fine,” he said. Mildly defensive.
“More than fine,” you assured, oblivious too, noting how Zuko puffed up his chest.
“More than fine,” he agreed, as if it was a personal achievement. "I’ve made sure of it personally—”
“She’s eating for three,” The woman said patiently.
Still didn't get it.
"Right. Yes. That’s — that’s what we’re doing. That’s the point, she’s—” He stopped.
The room was very quiet.
Zuko's brow pulled together. His mouth opened slightly. Something behind his eyes shifted, rearranged, went still.
“Twins?” The word came out like it had fought its way through.
“Twins, my Lord.”
You pushed yourself up on your elbows. “I’m sorry?”
“Twins.”
Same tone. Both times with no wariness.
“Really?" You prolonged, trying to process it all, "No, we were told one. Three different people said one. Everyone said one.”
The elder set her hands gently back on your stomach, pressing with two fingers just below your left side, then slowly drawing across. “The second heartbeat sits tucked behind the first. Deeper. The rhythm is close enough in early months that it reads as one if you aren’t listening for the difference.” She guided your hand to the spot. “Feel there. And then — here.”
You felt it. Faint. Distinct. A second pulse, slightly offset from the first, quiet but unmistakable once you knew what you were looking for.
“The second is smaller,” she continued, “which is common. They share the same space, the same nourishment. But both are strong. Both are settled. You are well, and the siblings are well. That is what matters most.”
You noticed Zuko was not looking at anything in particular, his face had done something unfamiliar — not panic, not quite joy, something rawer than either.
Siblings did not settle cleanly in Zuko’s mind.
It caught on something sharp inside him, like cloth snagging on splintered wood.
He didn't have the best experience with that word.
Precision instead of affection. Competition instead of comfort. A sister who never once looked at him like he was anything other than something to measure against, surpass, or burn away.
A sibling who is close to you by nature, not by choice. Someone who would understand you simply because you shared blood.
That belief had not lasted long.
Not under Ozai’s house.
Not under that kind of love.
Zuko swallowed once, his stomach turned, uneasy. Not with fear but something more complicated.
Zuko cleared his throat, “Anything else?”
The old woman paused. By his certain expression, she read the room pretty quickly.
She pressed her hands along your abdomen one final time, unhurried, thorough, before straightening and smoothing her robes.
“Everything is as it should be,” The old woman said. “Both are positioned well for this stage. Keep her resting when she’ll allow it. Red berry tea in the mornings for the fatigue, no spiced meats for another few weeks, and more iron in her meals. Red lentils, dark leafy greens.” She folded her hands. “I’ll return at the end of the month. Earlier if anything changes.”
Zuko nodded once. “Thank you.”
She gathered her things without ceremony, the soft clink of her instruments settling back into their case. She gave a low, respectful bowed at the door and she was gone.
In the late afternoon, you both were having dinner.
In a private dining room existed because Zuko insisted on it.
Insisted during the early months of his reign, made it quietly and unmistakably clear that there would be one room in the palace where no attendant stood at the wall, no advisor lingered near the door, no servant waited at the edge of his peripheral vision.
He just prefers alone time with you... in a place besides their room.
The room had low ceilings, stone walls hung with deep crimson silk panels. The floor cushions underneath their knees, the table low and unadorned. A single window looked out over the inner courtyard, and at this hour it showed nothing but dark sky and a distant amber glow.
And on the far wall, unavoidable, flanked by two standing candelabras — his official portrait.
Full length. Formal robes. The flame insignia of the Fire Lord rendered in gold above his head. His painted expression was composed and unreadable. You called him sexy in it.
The fish had been prepared with black garlic, slow-braised until the sauce had thickened into something deep and smoky after the dishes were set down. Underneath it, the steamed greens carried ginger and sesame. The rice was plain. A red berry tea steaming quietly in a clay pot between you.
You had been eating quietly, unbothered.
Zuko was kneeling across from you with his full bowl in front of him and his chopsticks resting across the rim like he had picked them up with every intention of using them and then simply forgotten what they were for. His elbow was on his knee. He was somewhere else entirely.
You chewed another piece of fish, quirked an eyebrow.
“It’s the stomach isn’t it,” you said pleasantly. “You can just say so. I won’t take it personally.”
Nothing.
You gestured at yourself with your chopsticks.
“I won’t be offended.” You poured slowly, deliberately. “Six months is a long time to look at it every day. Completely reasonable if it’s affecting your appetite.”
Zuko blinked. Came back into the room all at once, eyes finding yours with the slightly disoriented expression.
It took him a moment to catch up to what you’d said. When he did his expression cycled through startled, then indignant, then something that wanted very badly to be annoyed but couldn’t quite commit.
“It’s not—” Zuko exclaimed but being cut off.
“The food is good tonight,” you retort. “I’d hate for it to go to waste.”
He exhaled heavily. He looked at you for a long moment with the expression of a man who rebuilt an empire from the damage his own family had done to it.
And was currently losing to his pregnant wife.
“I was thinking,” he said, gruffly.
You smiled into your tea. “I know. Clarify?”
Zuko’s thumb moved slowly along the edge of the table, nervously. You waited patiently, knowing he'll confess eventually.
“The twins—” he started.
Then stopped.
Your face had already changed before he said anything else. You knew that expression.
The moment the elder said 'twins' something old and complicated moved behind his eyes before he could put it away. You had been there for enough of his history to know what that look was adjacent to.
You had also been there. You had watched them. Azula and him.
“I don’t want it to happen again,” Zuko continued, voice shaky, noticing your lack of confusion.
That soothed him somewhat.
“I was relieved,” he admitted, quieter now. “Before, months ago. When we still thought it was one. I was — I didn’t say it but I was relieved and now I’m—” He stopped. Shook his head once. “That’s not — I want them. Both of them. I just—”
“I don't want history to repeat itself.”
