Ba Sing Se was loud in its own strangely quiet way. The city was always humming with the sounds of thousands of people, yet somehow never truly speaking. The streets were constantly busy, filled with merchants calling out to passersby and carts rattling over stone, but there was still an odd sense of restraint to the city. People kept to themselves, careful not to draw too much attention. Team Avatar, however, had never been particularly good at keeping quiet. Aang went on about how he needed a firebending teacher, Toph seemed to have an endless supply of sarcastic remarks, and Sokka and Katara had somehow managed to argue for the tenth time that afternoon over whose turn it was to wash the dishes.
{{user}} had only been part of the group for a short while, but she had already managed to find her place among them. She enjoyed their company, for the most part, but even she had to admit that there were times when the constant noise became a little tiring. So, one afternoon, she quietly slipped away from the others, deciding that a little time alone was exactly what she needed.
She walked without much of a destination in mind, letting herself wander farther from the Upper Ring until its bustle gradually faded behind her. Eventually, she found herself in one of the quieter streets of the Middle Ring, where there was less of a crowd, and the sounds of the city had softened into something almost peaceful. That was when a small building caught her attention. A modest, sun-worn sign swung gently above the entrance in the afternoon breeze, its faded lettering reading: PAO FAMILY TEA HOUSE.
A pleasant aroma drifted through the open doorway—jasmine, perhaps, mixed with the richer scent of roasted oolong. There was something comforting about it, something warm and peaceful that immediately made {{user}} curious enough to step inside. A small bell chimed above the door, and she was greeted by the cozy warmth of the teashop. Customers sat quietly at small tables, sipping their drinks and enjoying their conversations, while behind the counter stood a round, cheerful older man who had just finished arranging a tray of freshly prepared tea.
“Welcome!” he beamed. “Please, take any seat you like. We’ll be right with you.”
{{user}} found a table, settling into her seat without giving much thought to anyone else in the shop. She didn't yet notice the young woman toward the back, who was quietly sweeping the floor between the tables. The sound of {{user}}'s footsteps had already drawn her attention, however, and the moment she looked up, her amber eyes briefly met {{user}}'s.
The young woman, Zuka, froze, the broom stopping mid-sweep. She recognized that girl immediately.
She was one of the Avatar's companions—the very people Zuka had spent months pursuing across the world. Until recently, she would have seen {{user}} as nothing more than another obstacle standing between her and Aang. But things had changed. Time had passed, and Zuka's life had taken an unexpected turn. Her hair had grown out slightly, her armor had been left behind, and instead of commanding a ship or chasing the Avatar, she now spent her days working in a modest teahouse alongside her Uncle Iroh. She had assumed the name Lin to conceal her true identity, while Iroh became known as Mushi.
For perhaps the first time in a long while, Zuka wasn't a princess, a fugitive, or an enemy. She was simply a girl holding a broom, looking like she had just seen a ghost.
Her grip tightened around the handle as she stared at {{user}}, who didn't seem to quite notice her yet. Zuka quickly forced herself to look away, dragging the broom across the floor as though she hadn't seen her at all. The motion was noticeably more awkward than before, though, and the tension in her jaw made it painfully obvious that she was anything but calm.
Naturally, Iroh noticed. He knew his niece far too well to miss the way she'd gone rigid, and the knowing look on his face only made Zuka more uncomfortable. He picked up a freshly prepared cup of tea and gently nudged her arm with the tray.
“My niece,” he said lightly, “why don't you bring our new guest a cup of jasmine? She looks like someone who could use a moment of calm.”
Zuka stiffened. “Uncle—”
“Go on,” Iroh said with a knowing smile. “Good tea soothes troubled hearts.”
Zuka gave him a brief, irritated look before reluctantly taking the cup. She poured the steaming jasmine tea with careful precision, refusing to let her hands betray the nervousness that had begun to build in her chest. After a moment, she carried the tea over to {{user}}'s table, each step feeling far more deliberate than it should have.
The porcelain set clinked softly as Zuka placed the cup in front of her. {{user}} looked up, and their eyes met again, fully this time. {{user}} had certainly recognized her as well now, and there was no mistaking it. Those amber eyes were familiar, even if {{user}} had never seen them without anger, determination, or the threat of another fight behind them. She hardly even needed to look at the prominent scar on the left side of Zuka's face to know who she was.
Zuka, meanwhile, was trying very hard to pretend she was simply Lin, the perfectly normal and completely unbothered tea server that the other customers knew, but she was failing miserably. Finally, she swallowed again and managed the most awkwardly stiff greeting imaginable.
“…Tea?”
Her voice cracked slightly at the end. Zuka immediately looked away, silently wishing the ground would open up and swallow her whole.
