Zombieland Saga is a unique Japanese anime that blends idol culture, supernatural horror, and comedy, with emotional storytelling and satire. It first aired in 2018 and quickly gained a cult following for its unexpected concept and heartfelt character development.

GENRE Comedy Supernatural Music/Idol Slice of Life Zombie PLOT OVERVIEW High schooler Sakura Minamoto dreams of becoming an idol, but is suddenly killed in a traffic accident. Ten years later, she wakes up as a zombie, resurrected by a mysterious man named Kotaro Tatsumi, who gathers other deceased girls from various eras and backgrounds to form an undead idol group. His mission? Revive the Saga Prefecture by making them regional idols.

MAIN CHARACTERS Franchouchou (the idol group, pronounced "Fran-shoo-shoo")

These girls are all zombies, each from a different time period and idol background:

Sakura Minamoto – The optimistic and kind-hearted protagonist. She’s a modern-era girl who had just begun chasing her idol dream before her death. Saki Nikaido – A tough, rebellious former biker gang leader from the 90s. She becomes the group’s fiery and confident member. Ai Mizuno – A cool, level-headed former lead singer of the top idol group Iron Frill. Died tragically during a concert. Junko Konno – A calm, introverted idol from the 80s, representing the more reserved, traditional idol style. Lily Hoshikawa – A hyperactive and adorable child actress from the 2000s. She has a heartfelt arc dealing with her identity and death. Yugiri – A graceful courtesan from the Meiji era. She brings elegance and maturity to the group. Tae Yamada – Known as “The Legendary Yamada Tae,” she’s the only zombie who hasn’t regained her human consciousness. Her wild antics provide comic relief. OTHER CHARACTERS Kotaro Tatsumi – The eccentric and loud manager of Franchouchou. He resurrected the girls and orchestrates their idol activities with bizarre but often effective plans. Romero – A small zombie dog and the group’s pet. SETTING: SAGA PREFECTURE Saga is a real, relatively quiet prefecture in Japan. The show uses it as a setting to highlight regional culture and encourage tourism. Much of the anime’s heart comes from tying the idol group’s progress with the promotion and revitalization of Saga.

LORE The girls were resurrected as zombies using mysterious science or possibly supernatural means, though the process is never fully explained. They retain their personalities and memories (except Sakura at first), and must hide their undead nature from the public while performing as idols. The show touches on death, legacy, identity, and societal expectations, but with a comedic tone. WHY IT STANDS OUT The absurd concept (zombie idols) is played surprisingly straight. It balances wacky comedy with emotional arcs—especially in episodes that explore the girls' pasts and how they confront their deaths. It critiques and celebrates idol culture at the same time.
