Zoe & Chloe — The Valjean Sisters -

(For @Yahoopegn & @TheQuickster33)

===================

The year is 1940, and Europe finds itself in a dark moment. Within half a decade, Adolf rebuilt the German military machine and plunged all of continental Europe into another world war. France has collapsed and Britain finds herself all alone in the conflict, and everyone is unsure about America intervening in another European war.

The surrender and fall of the Third French Republic in June of 1940 and the signing of the armistice treaty in Compiègne—in the very same railway carriage where Germany signed its surrender in 1918–damaged the national pride of the French, a pride that was cherished since their victory against Imperial Germany back in World War I.

Despite the evident flaws of the French military using outdated war doctrines, the French citizens (human and anthro alike) felt let down by the French government upon surrendering and fleeing, which then turned into angered betrayal from the French politicians who began to work alongside the Nazis and Philippe Pétain to form Vichy France.

Among the French population, the citizens have three options: Defy the Vichy overlords and heed to Charles de Gaulle's calls for resistance, try to live out as neutral as possible to avoid angering both French partisans and Vichy authorities, or join the Vichy Government and enforce their order.

While many joined the Vichy government due to their ideological agreements with Fascism, Nationalism, Traditionalist Conservatism, Anti-Communism, and Anti-Democratic Liberalism, most were forced against their will—knowing that their French brethren will never forgive them for their forced collaboration. Among the forced-against-their-will collaborators, are Zoe and Chloe Valjean; two twin sisters who joined the war out of patriotism, but now find themselves as enforcers for the enemy they once pledged to fight against.

The sun warms the fields of rural France, a golden blanket over the wheat. Zoe, strong and steady, guides the plow, her muscles taut beneath her simple dress. Chloe, nimble and quick, gathers the fallen stalks, her laughter echoing across the farm. It is the Interwar Period, and the lives of the two Valjean sisters are a rhythm of seasons, of planting and harvest. The world beyond their valley whispers of Popular Front rallies, of the fiery Cross of Fire parades, of political divisions tearing at the fabric of France. But here, on the Valjean farm, the earth is their anchor, the cycles of life their only politics. They are sisters, bound by blood and soil, oblivious to the storm clouds gathering on the horizon.

Then, the storm breaks. It's the year 1939, and war explodes across Europe. A fervent, almost desperate patriotism sweeps through France. Posters of Marianne, resolute and defiant, adorn every village square. The call to arms echoes, and something stirs deep within the Valjean sisters. They are French, and France needs them. A wild, audacious plan takes root. They cut their long hair short, bind their chests tight with strips of linen, and practice walking with a swagger, deepening their voices. They enlist, side by side, their hearts pounding in unison. Miraculously, they pass. They are Private Jean-Pierre and Private Antoine, two Valjean brothers and fresh-faced recruits from the countryside, assigned to the same infantry unit. The training is vigorous, the camaraderie immediate. They learn to march, to shoot, to dig trenches—the very tactics that won the last war. The old brass of the French High Command, steeped in the glory of 1918, prepare for a war of attrition, of slow, methodical advances. But the Germans arrive with a different doctrine. It's May 1940, and the Wehrmacht unleashes the Blitzkrieg onto the French after the long pause that was the "Phoney War". Tanks, a steel tide, surge across the Ardennes and the Benelux nations, followed by relentless Stuka dive-bombers screaming from the sky. The French lines, designed for static defense, crumble under the sheer speed and ferocity of the assault. Zoe and Chloe, huddled in a hastily dug trench, watch in horror as their comrades fall, as the world around them dissolves into chaos. The patriotism that fueled the Valjean sisters' enlistment is replaced by a cold, numbing fear. They fight, fiercely, desperately, but it is a losing battle. The writing is on the wall. France is doomed. June 1940 arrives, heavy with defeat. The news spreads like wildfire: France has surrendered. The humiliation is absolute. The armistice is signed in Compiègne, in the very same railway carriage where Germany signed its surrender in 1918. The Third French Republic, once a beacon of liberty, collapses. In its place rises Vichy France, a new regime collaborating with the German occupiers. The remnants of the French Army are reorganized. Vichy authorities present the Valjean sisters with a grim choice. They are no longer soldiers of France, but potential recruits for the "Armistice Army". The offer is stark: join, and receive ration exemptions, higher wages, and immunity from the harsh social restrictions now imposed on ordinary French citizens. Refuse, and face the consequences—forced labor, a slow descent into starvation and despair. The hearts of Zoe and Chloe ache with betrayal, their minds reel with the implications. To serve the very regime that has brought their nation to its knees? To hunt their own people? But the alternative is unthinkable. They look at each other, their eyes reflecting a shared, profound weariness. Survival demands compromise. Reluctantly, with a bitter taste in their mouths, both Zoe and Chloe join the Armistice Army. The Valjean sisters' first assignments are chilling. They are sent to hunt Maquis partisans, brave men and women (human and anthro alike) who refuse to yield. They track down British soldiers, unfortunate stragglers left behind after Dunkirk, now hiding in the French countryside. Each patrol, each confrontation, is a demonstration of loyalty, a forced performance for Valjean sisters' new masters. They move through the occupied land, their uniforms marked with the symbol of their unwilling complicity, their true identities hidden beneath layers of deception and despair. The sun still warms the fields, but for Zoe and Chloe, the golden blanket has become a shroud.)]
