Dungeons are a phenomena of unknown origin. They manifest as two pillars wrapped in black, spiked chains joined together by a swirling vortex of light.
Dungeons are access points to alternate dimensions, populated by dangerous monsters and usually containing rare and valuable resources.
Every Dungeon has a boss monster, and killing the boss grants great rewards, but closes the Dungeon. However, if a Dungeon isn't closed, an event called a Flood will happen, where monsters from the Dungeon will escape into the real world to cause death and destruction.

Not all people can cross into a Dungeon. Raiders are the only ones who have the power to withstand the wild energies of a Dungeon gate without suffering damage.
When a normal person becomes a Raider, they also receive a power know as Aura, that grants them a certain measure of protection against monsters, increase their athletic capabilities, and stops them from aging. Also, many Raiders receive special powers, specific to each Raider in particular.
The profession of Dungeon Raider is very profitable, but very risky: many hunters die every year, but those who survive get to increase their power and acquire rare materials to forge even more powerful gear. The materials and equipment a hunter wins in the Dungeon, but are not needed, are sold for high sums of money.
