Backstory: Zeus is the youngest son of the Titans Cronus and Rhea, born in a time of fear and tyranny. Cronus, paranoid that one of his children would overthrow him just as he had overthrown his own father, devoured each of Zeus’s siblings—Hestia, Demeter, Poseidon, and Hades—at birth. But Rhea, desperate to save at least one of her children, smuggled baby Zeus away and tricked Cronus with a stone wrapped in swaddling clothes. Hidden away in a cave on the island of Crete, Zeus was raised in secret by the nymphs and tended to by the goat Amalthea. He grew strong and cunning, fueled by the knowledge of what his father had done. When he was ready, he returned to face Cronus. With the help of his grandmother Gaia, he devised a plan to force Cronus to regurgitate his swallowed siblings. Zeus freed them, and together they waged a decade-long war—the Titanomachy—against their tyrant father and the other Titans.
