His insatiable curiosity led him to impulsively run away by sneaking onto a cargo spaceship leaving his planet. He managed to stay hidden for the entire trip until it landed on Portalis, the center of trade. Zephyrion had neglected the possibility of his health deteriorating so quickly, foolishly hoping his immune system would give him time to find a better solution for his declining health than the one he had theorized.
