Zenless Zone Zero — World Summary
Zenless Zone Zero takes place in a post-apocalyptic, futuristic world where civilization has been almost destroyed by supernatural disasters called Hollows. 🌍 The World
The old world was devastated by mysterious dimensional disasters known as Hollows. These are enormous, unstable spaces that suddenly appear and distort reality.
Inside Hollows:
Space and geography behave strangely. Dangerous monsters called Ethereals appear. Humans can become corrupted by Ether. Valuable resources can be found. People can become trapped or lost. Time and distance don't necessarily behave normally.
Because of this, Hollows are extremely dangerous—but they're also economically valuable. 🏙️ New Eridu
The main setting is New Eridu, the last major human civilization.
Unlike a traditional post-apocalyptic wasteland, New Eridu is a huge, lively city. People have:
Cars and motorcycles Smartphones and computers Television and movies Businesses and restaurants Advanced weapons Robots and Bangboo Public transportation Corporations and government agencies
Basically, humanity has rebuilt civilization around the existence of Hollows.
New Eridu is therefore a strange combination of cyberpunk city + modern society + post-apocalyptic world. ☢️ Ether
Ether is the mysterious energy associated with Hollows.
It can be extremely useful, but prolonged exposure is dangerous.
Humans and other living beings exposed to too much Ether can suffer corruption, eventually becoming monstrous beings.
At the same time, Ether can be used as a powerful technological and energy resource.
That's one of the central ideas of ZZZ:
The thing threatening humanity is also one of the things keeping civilization alive.
👹 Ethereals
Ethereals are monsters created/affected by Hollow phenomena.
They come in many forms, from relatively small creatures to enormous bosses.
They are one of the biggest threats to people entering Hollows.
However, not everything inside a Hollow is automatically evil, and the game's story gradually reveals that the relationship between Hollows, Ether and humanity is considerably more complicated than it first appears. 🧑💻 Proxies
The player characters, Wise and Belle, are siblings who secretly work as Proxies under the name Phaethon.
A Proxy is essentially a specialized guide who helps people navigate Hollows.
Think of them as a combination of:
Guide Hacker Information broker Hollow navigator Fixer Mercenary coordinator
Phaethon is particularly famous because they possess an unusually advanced ability to navigate Hollows.
The siblings operate out of a video store called Random Play, which serves as their public-facing business. 🤖 Bangboo
Bangboo are small intelligent robotic creatures found throughout New Eridu.
They're used for things such as:
Transportation Communication Assistance Hollow exploration Everyday jobs
They're essentially one of the iconic pieces of ZZZ's world.
Some Bangboo have surprisingly strong personalities and behave almost like little people. 🏢 Factions
New Eridu isn't controlled by one simple organization.
Different factions have their own interests and responsibilities.
Some important ones include:
Cunning Hares — a small group of professional Hollow investigators/mercenaries. Victoria Housekeeping Co. — an elite housekeeping service whose employees are also extremely capable combatants. Belobog Heavy Industries — a construction and engineering company that works in dangerous areas. New Eridu Public Security (N.E.P.S.) — the city's police/security organization. Section 6 — an elite Hollow-related special operations unit. Sons of Calydon — an Outer Ring faction strongly associated with motorcycles, vehicles and a rougher lifestyle. Obol Squad — a military organization. H.A.N.D. — an organization involved with Hollow investigation and operations. Mockingbird — a mysterious organization involved in criminal activity.
These groups don't always agree with one another, which creates much of the game's political and interpersonal conflict. 🏜️ The Outer Ring
Outside New Eridu lies the Outer Ring, a much harsher region.
Life there is less comfortable and less protected than inside the city.
The Sons of Calydon are particularly important here.
The Outer Ring gives the world a more traditional post-apocalyptic feeling: settlements, dangerous roads, powerful gangs, vehicles and communities trying to survive in an environment heavily affected by Hollow disasters. 🧬 Thirens
Not everyone in ZZZ is an ordinary human.
There are people known as Thirens, humanoid beings with animal characteristics.
Examples include:
Ellen — shark Thiren Nekomata — cat Thiren Lycaon — wolf Thiren Seth — tiger Thiren Ben — bear Thiren
Thirens are a normal part of society, although different species and cultures have their own traditions. 🎬 The Overall Style
One of the coolest things about ZZZ's world is that it doesn't look like a typical post-apocalyptic game.
Instead of:
"The world ended, everyone is starving, and civilization is gone."
It's more like:
"The world ended, humanity rebuilt itself, and now everyone has to figure out how to live with the apocalypse."
You can walk through New Eridu and see people shopping, eating at restaurants, watching movies, playing games and going to work—while a gigantic supernatural disaster could be occurring only a few blocks away.
That's what gives ZZZ its distinctive urban fantasy + cyberpunk + post-apocalyptic + anime atmosphere. 📖 The Central Mystery
Behind all of this is a much larger mystery:
What exactly are Hollows, where did they come from, why are they appearing, and what is really happening to the world?
Phaethon's personal history is also connected to these mysteries.
As the story progresses, the game moves beyond simply:
"Go into Hollow → fight monsters → get paid."
It increasingly deals with:
The origins of Hollows Ether The old world Powerful organizations Artificial intelligence Experiments The true history of New Eridu Phaethon's past The relationship between humans and Ethereals
So underneath the colorful characters and comedy, ZZZ has a much darker science-fiction mystery at its core. In one sentence:
Zenless Zone Zero is a story about humanity rebuilding a stylish modern civilization after supernatural dimensional disasters nearly destroyed the world—while Proxies, corporations, police, soldiers, gangs and mysterious organizations fight over the dangerous Hollows and the secrets hidden inside them. {user is the last man on earth} all faction have united to protect you and help you repoulate humanity.
