⚡ Basic Character Overview

Zenitsu Agatsuma is one of the three central young Demon Slayers alongside Tanjiro Kamado and Inosuke Hashibira.

He initially appears to be almost the exact opposite of what you would expect from a Demon Slayer.

He's terrified of demons.

He's terrified of dying.

He's terrified of pain.

He's constantly convinced he's going to die.

He cries.

He screams.

He begs.

He tries to run away.

He repeatedly insists that he's weak and useless.

And yet, underneath all of that is an extraordinarily talented swordsman who possesses exceptional hearing, tremendous physical speed, and an almost absurdly refined mastery of Thunder Breathing's First Form. The official anime site describes him as normally timid but entering a trance when sufficiently terrified, revealing his actual combat ability.

That contradiction is essentially Zenitsu's entire character.

He isn't simply "the cowardly comic-relief character."

He's a boy with very little confidence in himself who nevertheless repeatedly does courageous things.

💛 APPEARANCE

Zenitsu is immediately recognizable.

Hair

His hair is naturally dark, but after being struck by lightning during his training, it became the distinctive bright yellow/blond color associated with him.

It is short-to-medium length and heavily tousled, with uneven, jagged locks.

The color is especially important because it visually reinforces his Thunder Breathing theme.

His hair is generally a golden yellow, becoming somewhat darker/shadowed depending on the lighting and animation.

Eyes

Zenitsu has large, expressive orange-gold eyes.

His eyes contribute heavily to his usual appearance because his face is extremely expressive.

When he's frightened, his eyes can become enormous.

When he's crying, they practically look like they're going to fall out of his head.

When he's angry or serious, however, the difference is striking.

His eyes become much sharper and more focused.

That contrast is part of the visual distinction between his ordinary personality and his combat state.

Face

Zenitsu normally has a youthful, almost delicate-looking face.

He's frequently:

sweating crying grimacing panicking screaming pleading looking absolutely horrified

But when he becomes serious, his entire face changes.

His expression becomes calm and concentrated.

This is especially noticeable during his unconscious/trance fighting.

Body

Zenitsu is relatively short and slender compared with many of the adult Demon Slayers.

He's around 164.5 cm (about 5'5") and 58 kg (about 128 lb) at the beginning of the story.

He's not built like Tengen, Gyomei, or even Inosuke.

His greatest physical advantages are instead:

speed + reflexes + hearing + technique.

🟨 CLOTHING

Zenitsu wears the standard Demon Slayer uniform.

Over it, he wears his famous yellow-orange haori patterned with small white triangles.

The pattern resembles a repeating geometric lightning/thunder motif and makes him visually distinct from almost every other Corps member.

He wears his uniform trousers tucked into his leg coverings, with his sandals completing the outfit.

His Nichirin sword is yellow, corresponding nicely with his lightning/thunder aesthetic.

⚡ HIS PERSONALITY

This is where Zenitsu gets REALLY interesting.

  1. Extremely cowardly

This is unquestionably one of his defining traits.

Zenitsu is genuinely afraid.

It's not merely an act.

He doesn't walk into a demon fight thinking:

"I'm going to win!"

He thinks:

"I'M GOING TO DIE."

He frequently tries to avoid dangerous situations and can become almost hysterical when confronted with demons.

The official description specifically characterizes him as having essentially no confidence in himself and being highly timid.

😭 2. Extremely emotional

Zenitsu is one of the loudest and most emotionally expressive characters in the series.

He doesn't bottle things up.

If he's scared:

HE SCREAMS.

If he's sad:

HE CRIES.

If he's angry:

HE YELLS.

If he's excited:

HE YELLS EVEN MORE.

If he thinks he's going to die:

EVERYBODY IS GOING TO HEAR ABOUT IT.

This makes him hilarious, but it also reveals something important:

Zenitsu isn't emotionally numb.

He's actually extremely sensitive.

💔 3. Terrible self-esteem

This may be more important than his cowardice.

Zenitsu genuinely believes that he isn't good enough.

He frequently calls himself useless and assumes that other people are better than him.

This is partly why he desperately seeks reassurance and companionship.

He wants somebody to tell him:

"You're valuable."

"You're strong."

"You're not useless."

"I won't abandon you."

This also explains why Tanjiro's kindness affects him so strongly.

Tanjiro doesn't constantly mock him for being afraid.

Instead, Tanjiro recognizes that Zenitsu is actually capable.

👂 4. His hearing is extraordinary

Zenitsu has an exceptionally powerful sense of hearing.

He can hear things ordinary people cannot.

More importantly, he can interpret sounds.

He can distinguish people and demons through their sounds and can even detect things about someone's emotional state.

His hearing essentially functions as another sensory system.

This is one of the reasons he's much more perceptive than his personality initially suggests.

⚔️ 5. An absurdly talented swordsman

This is one of the funniest contradictions about him.

Zenitsu spends most of his waking life saying:

"I CAN'T DO THIS!"

Meanwhile, his actual fighting ability is incredible.

He becomes exceptionally proficient with Thunder Breathing.

For most of the story, Zenitsu focuses almost exclusively on First Form: Thunderclap and Flash.

Instead of knowing every technique equally, he essentially takes one technique and pushes it to an extreme level.

He develops variations such as multiple consecutive uses of Thunderclap and Flash.

Eventually, he creates his own Seventh Form.

So his apparent weakness hides an extremely specialized combat talent.

😴 6. "Sleeping Zenitsu"

This is arguably his most famous characteristic.

When Zenitsu becomes sufficiently terrified, he can lose consciousness and enter a trance-like state.

And then...

He becomes terrifyingly competent.

His movements become precise.

His fear disappears.

His voice becomes calmer.

His swordsmanship becomes extremely efficient.

He's capable of doing things his conscious self struggles to believe he can do.

However, it's important not to interpret this as literally being an entirely different person.

It's more like Zenitsu's fear and conscious self-doubt stop interfering with the skills he already possesses.

The official character description specifically notes that his personality becomes sharp-minded when he enters this state.

❤️ 7. He is genuinely courageous

This is one of the most important things about Zenitsu.

Being afraid doesn't make him incapable of courage.

In fact, Zenitsu repeatedly proves that he can act despite fear.

There are moments where he protects people even though he is terrified.

One particularly important example occurs when he protects Nezuko's box from Inosuke.

Zenitsu doesn't even know what's inside initially.

He simply knows that Tanjiro told him the box is precious.

So despite being terrified of Inosuke, he refuses to let him destroy it.

That's incredibly important because it demonstrates that Zenitsu's courage exists even before his character development is complete.

💕 8. He loves women... A LOT

Zenitsu is famously girl-crazy.

He becomes enamored with attractive women very easily.

He'll frequently ask women to marry him, desperately seek their attention, or become extremely excited around them.

This is intentionally exaggerated for comedy.

However, there is a darker side to this behavior: early-series Zenitsu can be pushy and disrespectful when he doesn't understand or accept rejection.

That shouldn't be ignored simply because the series presents many of those moments as jokes.

His feelings for Nezuko eventually become much more meaningful because he gradually develops genuine concern for her rather than merely treating her as a pretty girl he wants to marry.

🌸 9. He is incredibly loyal

Once Zenitsu genuinely considers someone a friend, he cares about them deeply.

This applies particularly to:

Tanjiro Nezuko Inosuke Jigoro

He may complain constantly.

He may scream.

He may threaten to run away.

But when it truly matters, he doesn't abandon the people he loves.

🧠 10. Zenitsu is smarter than he looks

People sometimes interpret Zenitsu's panic as stupidity.

He isn't stupid.

He's actually capable of:

recognizing danger analyzing situations understanding other people's behavior using his hearing strategically recognizing combat patterns giving practical advice

His biggest problem is that his anxiety overwhelms his ability to act confidently.

👨‍👦 JIGORO KUWAJIMA — HIS MASTER / FATHER FIGURE

Jigoro Kuwajima is arguably one of the most important people in Zenitsu's entire life.

Jigoro rescued Zenitsu when he was young and took responsibility for him.

He trained him in Thunder Breathing.

Jigoro was strict.

Very strict.

Zenitsu frequently tried to run away from training.

But Jigoro never gave up on him.

That is extremely significant.

Zenitsu had extremely low confidence, yet Jigoro continued insisting that he could become a Demon Slayer.

Zenitsu eventually comes to regard him as essentially his grandfather/father figure.

His death devastates Zenitsu.

And when Zenitsu learns what happened with Kaigaku, his grief becomes intertwined with rage.

Jigoro's influence is ultimately one of the biggest reasons Zenitsu becomes determined to grow stronger.

⚔️ KAIGAKU — HIS SENIOR DISCIPLE / RIVAL

Kaigaku

This relationship is extremely complicated.

Kaigaku was Jigoro's other student.

He was Zenitsu's senior.

Unlike Zenitsu, Kaigaku was confident, aggressive, and already highly skilled.

But Kaigaku looked down on Zenitsu.

He considered Zenitsu pathetic because Zenitsu was cowardly.

Zenitsu hated Kaigaku.

But he also respected him.

That's the important part.

Zenitsu viewed Kaigaku as someone important to Jigoro and someone who possessed abilities he himself lacked.

Kaigaku eventually becomes a demon and takes the position of Upper Rank Six.

That betrayal destroys Zenitsu emotionally.

When Zenitsu eventually fights him, something extraordinary happens:

Zenitsu is awake.

No unconscious trance.

No accidental transformation.

No hiding behind sleep.

He consciously fights Kaigaku.

And he is furious.

The fight represents Zenitsu finally confronting:

his fear his inferiority complex his relationship with Jigoro his resentment toward Kaigaku his own identity as a swordsman

Zenitsu ultimately creates his own Seventh Form and defeats Kaigaku.

Yet even after everything, Zenitsu admits that Kaigaku had been important to him.

That's what makes their relationship tragic rather than simply "good guy versus bad guy."

🌞 TANJIRO KAMADO — HIS BEST FRIEND

Tanjiro Kamado

Tanjiro is probably Zenitsu's closest male friend.

Their relationship begins rather awkwardly.

Zenitsu is essentially desperate for help and companionship.

Tanjiro is initially confused and annoyed by him.

But they gradually become extremely close.

Zenitsu trusts Tanjiro enormously.

He sees Tanjiro as:

kind reliable strong brave dependable trustworthy

And Tanjiro sees Zenitsu as a genuine friend.

Tanjiro is also remarkably patient with him.

He doesn't simply dismiss Zenitsu as weak.

He recognizes that Zenitsu has genuine strength.

Zenitsu also gets jealous whenever Tanjiro has interactions with girls, which leads to plenty of comedic arguments.

And because Zenitsu loves Nezuko, he sometimes basically treats Tanjiro as his potential future brother-in-law.

Their friendship is ultimately based on mutual trust despite their wildly different personalities.

🐗 INOSUKE HASHIBIRA — HIS CHAOTIC RIVAL / FRIEND

Inosuke Hashibira

If Tanjiro is Zenitsu's emotional anchor, Inosuke is his chaotic opposite.

Zenitsu thinks Inosuke is:

an idiot.

Inosuke thinks Zenitsu is:

a coward.

They argue constantly.

They insult each other.

They scream at each other.

They sometimes physically fight.

And yet...

They become friends.

Their personalities are almost perfectly opposite:

Zenitsu Inosuke Avoids danger Runs toward danger Terrified Fearless Emotional Aggressive Wants reassurance Wants competition Cautious Reckless Overthinks Barely thinks Complains Challenges

And somehow, this works.

Inosuke eventually recognizes Zenitsu's combat ability.

He is particularly impressed by Zenitsu's sleeping-state swordsmanship.

Their relationship gradually becomes genuine friendship beneath all the yelling.

🌸 NEZUKO KAMADO — HIS LOVE

Nezuko Kamado

This is Zenitsu's most important romantic relationship.

He falls in love with Nezuko essentially immediately after seeing her.

He is completely smitten.

He thinks she's beautiful.

He adores her.

He wants to marry her.

He becomes extremely jealous when other boys interact positively with her.

But there's more to their relationship than comedy.

Zenitsu repeatedly protects Nezuko.

And interestingly, he protects her before he even properly knows her.

When Inosuke tries to attack the box containing Nezuko, Zenitsu protects it because Tanjiro told him the box is important.

Later, Zenitsu directly fights to protect Nezuko.

His love gradually becomes less about:

"She's pretty! I want to marry her!"

and more about:

"I care about this person and want her to be safe."

Eventually, after Nezuko becomes human again, the two marry and have descendants.

🦋 SHINOBU KOCHO

Shinobu Kocho

Zenitsu is very attracted to Shinobu.

Naturally.

She's pretty.

Therefore:

Zenitsu.exe has stopped functioning.

He's especially affected when Shinobu gives him encouragement or physical reassurance.

But their relationship isn't particularly deep.

Shinobu generally views him as one of the younger Corps members.

Zenitsu also finds her somewhat intimidating because her pleasant smile can conceal how frighteningly capable she is.

🌸 AOI KANZAKI

Aoi Kanzaki

Aoi and Zenitsu have a largely comedic relationship.

Zenitsu is attracted to her.

Aoi, meanwhile, is considerably more practical and disciplined.

She isn't particularly interested in indulging Zenitsu's dramatic behavior.

During rehabilitation training at the Butterfly Mansion, Aoi is one of the people responsible for pushing the boys through training.

Zenitsu complains.

A lot.

Their relationship is essentially:

Zenitsu: "PLEASE DON'T MAKE ME DO THIS!"

Aoi: "Do it."

Zenitsu: "😭"

🦋 KANAO TSUYURI

Kanao Tsuyuri

Zenitsu and Kanao don't have an especially deep relationship.

They're fellow young Demon Slayers who spend time around each other at the Butterfly Mansion.

Zenitsu generally recognizes her as extremely skilled.

She's also one of the many girls who can make him react dramatically.

But compared with Tanjiro, Nezuko, Inosuke, Jigoro, and Kaigaku, Kanao simply isn't one of his closest relationships.

🔥 KYOJURO RENGOKU

Kyojuro Rengoku

Zenitsu respects Rengoku's strength.

Rengoku represents many things Zenitsu struggles with:

confidence fearlessness determination certainty physical strength willingness to act

Zenitsu is also deeply affected by Rengoku's death.

Like Tanjiro and Inosuke, he recognizes the enormous loss represented by Rengoku's death.

Rengoku's presence also reinforces an important theme for Zenitsu:

A strong Demon Slayer isn't someone who never feels fear.

💎 TENGEN UZUI

Tengen Uzui

Their relationship is hilarious.

Zenitsu does not particularly like Tengen.

Tengen is flamboyant.

Confident.

Extremely attractive.

Extremely muscular.

And has three wives.

Zenitsu's reaction is basically:

"THIS IS UNFAIR."

Tengen also treats Zenitsu, Tanjiro, and Inosuke as expendable young recruits during the Entertainment District operation.

Zenitsu becomes particularly irritated by Tengen's attitude toward women because Zenitsu himself is extremely girl-crazy.

There's also a gigantic jealousy component.

Tengen receives female attention effortlessly.

Zenitsu absolutely cannot cope with this.

At one point, Zenitsu's irritation toward Tengen becomes so intense that Tengen knocks him unconscious.

🌊 GIYU TOMIOKA

Giyu Tomioka

Zenitsu doesn't have an especially close personal relationship with Giyu.

However, Giyu is one of the Hashira who recognizes the importance of Tanjiro and Nezuko.

Zenitsu is also notably jealous of Giyu's positive interactions with Nezuko.

Giyu's quiet, emotionally reserved personality is basically the opposite of Zenitsu's.

Their interactions are therefore usually limited.

💗 MITSURI KANROJI

Mitsuri Kanroji

Zenitsu finds Mitsuri extremely attractive.

Which is unsurprising.

He generally becomes very excited around beautiful women, and Mitsuri is no exception.

However, there's no deep romantic relationship between them.

Mitsuri's main emotional connections are elsewhere, particularly with Obanai and her fellow Corps members.

Zenitsu's interest is primarily comedic.

🌪️ SANEMI SHINAZUGAWA

Sanemi Shinazugawa

Sanemi and Zenitsu don't have a particularly warm relationship.

Sanemi is abrasive and intimidating.

Zenitsu is easily frightened by intimidating people.

That's... not a fantastic combination.

Zenitsu also doesn't particularly appreciate Sanemi's harshness.

And because Sanemi has interactions with Nezuko, Zenitsu can become jealous.

There isn't a significant friendship between them.

🐍 OBANAI IGURO

Obanai Iguro

Obanai and Zenitsu aren't particularly close.

Obanai is extremely serious and disciplined.

Zenitsu is...

Zenitsu.

Their personalities don't naturally mesh.

Zenitsu also being an enthusiastic admirer of pretty women can put him at odds with Obanai's extremely strong feelings toward Mitsuri.

🪨 GYOMEI HIMEJIMA

Gyomei Himejima

Gyomei is generally compassionate toward the younger Demon Slayers.

Zenitsu respects him as a Hashira.

Their relationship isn't especially developed, but Gyomei represents another example of an older Demon Slayer who can recognize that Zenitsu possesses potential beneath his fear.

🌫️ MUICHIRO TOKITO

Muichiro Tokito

Muichiro and Zenitsu aren't close.

They're both extremely talented young swordsmen, but their personalities couldn't be more different.

Zenitsu is extremely emotionally expressive.

Muichiro is initially detached and absent-minded.

Zenitsu would probably find Muichiro's lack of reaction to his screaming extremely frustrating.

🏯 KAGAYA UBUYASHIKI

Kagaya Ubuyashiki

Zenitsu respects Kagaya as the leader of the Demon Slayer Corps.

Kagaya represents authority, but unlike intimidating figures such as Sanemi, he doesn't treat Zenitsu cruelly.

His calm and compassionate leadership is compatible with Zenitsu's emotional nature.

Zenitsu ultimately fights as part of the Corps under Kagaya's leadership.

🩸 MUZAN KIBUTSUJI

Muzan Kibutsuji

Zenitsu hates Muzan.

Muzan is the source of the demon threat that has devastated countless lives.

He is also responsible for the circumstances surrounding Nezuko becoming a demon.

By the final battle, Zenitsu's fear of demons has been substantially overshadowed by his determination to fight.

Muzan therefore represents the ultimate enemy of everything Zenitsu has come to care about.

💤 ENMU

Enmu

Zenitsu fights Enmu's forces aboard the Mugen Train alongside Tanjiro, Inosuke, and Nezuko.

Enmu's ability involves manipulating dreams, which creates a particularly interesting contrast with Zenitsu's own unusual relationship with consciousness and sleep.

Zenitsu contributes to protecting the others during the battle.

🕸️ RUI

Rui

Zenitsu fights on Natagumo Mountain while Tanjiro confronts Rui.

His major involvement during this arc is fighting the spider-related demon threat and protecting Nezuko's box.

This is also one of the arcs where his seemingly cowardly personality contrasts sharply with his actual ability.

🎀 DAKI

Daki

Zenitsu encounters Daki during the Entertainment District arc.

Despite being terrified, he fights her.

This is important because Zenitsu begins demonstrating that his courage is becoming increasingly conscious.

He isn't simply relying on unconscious combat anymore.

His desire to protect people he cares about helps push him beyond his fear.

🩸 GYUTARO

Gyutaro

Zenitsu doesn't have a deep personal relationship with Gyutaro.

Their connection is primarily that Gyutaro is one of the demons Zenitsu helps fight during the Entertainment District battle.

Zenitsu's speed is especially useful during this battle.

🥊 AKAZA

Akaza

Zenitsu doesn't have a significant personal relationship with Akaza.

Akaza's major personal conflict is with Rengoku, Tanjiro, and later Giyu.

Zenitsu is largely separate from that storyline.

🌙 KOKUSHIBO

Kokushibo

Zenitsu does not have a substantial direct relationship with Kokushibo.

However, Kokushibo is extremely important to Zenitsu's story because Kokushibo is connected to Kaigaku becoming a demon.

That makes Kokushibo indirectly responsible for one of the greatest personal tragedies in Zenitsu's life.

🧪 TAMAYO

Tamayo

Zenitsu has little direct interaction with Tamayo.

However, Tamayo is enormously important to the overall story because she works toward a method of restoring Nezuko's humanity.

Therefore, indirectly, Tamayo contributes to the eventual future in which Zenitsu and Nezuko can have a normal life together.

🖌️ YUSHIRO

Yushiro

Zenitsu doesn't have a major personal relationship with Yushiro.

Yushiro is far more closely connected to Tamayo and Tanjiro's storyline.

🐱 CHACHAMARU

Chachamaru

Zenitsu has little meaningful personal interaction with Chachamaru.

Chachamaru primarily belongs to Tamayo and Yushiro's storyline.

👧 SUMI, KIYO & NAHO

The three Butterfly Mansion girls have interactions with Zenitsu during his rehabilitation.

Zenitsu generally reacts to the girls with his usual exaggerated enthusiasm.

They are part of the support network surrounding the young Demon Slayers at the mansion.

They aren't among his closest friends, but they contribute to his recovery and training environment.

👩‍⚕️ KANAe KOCHO

Kanae Kocho

Zenitsu never forms a major relationship with Kanae because of her death before the main story.

However, Kanae's influence is felt through Shinobu and the Butterfly Mansion.

🦋 KABURAMARU

Kaburamaru

Zenitsu doesn't have a meaningful relationship with Kaburamaru.

Kaburamaru is primarily Obanai's companion.

🏠 HIS RELATIONSHIP WITH THE DEMON SLAYER CORPS

This is worth mentioning separately.

Zenitsu initially doesn't seem like someone who belongs in the Demon Slayer Corps.

He constantly wants to escape.

He constantly complains about missions.

He repeatedly believes he's going to die.

But over time, the Corps becomes something very important to him.

It gives him:

friends purpose a master people to protect a place where his abilities matter

Eventually, he doesn't simply fight because he's ordered to.

He fights because people he loves are there.

⚡ ZENITSU'S CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT

Zenitsu's development is easy to overlook because his personality remains exaggerated throughout the series.

He doesn't suddenly become a completely calm, stoic warrior.

He is still Zenitsu.

He still screams.

He still cries.

He still gets frightened.

He still loves pretty girls.

But his actions change.

And that's what matters.

Early Zenitsu:

"I'm going to die! I can't do this!"

Later Zenitsu:

"I'm terrified."

...and then fights anyway.

That's the difference.

His ultimate development isn't:

"Zenitsu stops being afraid."

It's:

"Zenitsu learns that being afraid doesn't mean he's worthless."

⚡ HIS BIGGEST INTERNAL CONTRADICTION

Zenitsu believes:

"I'm weak."

Reality repeatedly demonstrates:

He isn't.

Zenitsu believes:

"I'm useless."

Tanjiro repeatedly relies on him.

Zenitsu believes:

"I'm a coward."

He repeatedly risks himself for other people.

Zenitsu believes:

"I can't become strong."

He eventually develops his own Thunder Breathing form.

Zenitsu believes:

"I can't fight while awake."

He defeats Kaigaku while completely conscious.

That's why the Kaigaku fight is so important.

It proves that the "sleeping Zenitsu" wasn't the only capable version of him.

Awake Zenitsu can fight too.

💛 ZENITSU'S MOST IMPORTANT RELATIONSHIPS AT A GLANCE Character Relationship Nezuko Love interest → eventual wife Tanjiro Extremely close best friend Inosuke Rival-like best friend Jigoro Master / grandfather-like father figure Kaigaku Senior disciple, rival, complicated former companion Shinobu Corps senior; Zenitsu is attracted to her Aoi Butterfly Mansion companion; comedic dynamic Kanao Fellow young Demon Slayer Tengen Antagonistic/comedic relationship Rengoku Respected senior Giyu Distant fellow Corps member Mitsuri Fellow Hashira whom Zenitsu finds attractive Sanemi Distant/tense Corps relationship Obanai Distant Corps relationship Muichiro Distant fellow Corps member Gyomei Respected senior Kagaya Respected Corps leader Muzan Enemy Daki Enemy Gyutaro Enemy Enmu Enemy Rui Enemy Akaza Enemy with little personal interaction Kokushibo Indirectly connected through Kaigaku Tamayo Allied demon; little direct interaction Yushiro Allied demon; little direct interaction 🌩️ And the simplest way to understand Zenitsu...

Zenitsu is not actually the character who is "afraid but secretly fearless."

He's more complicated than that.

He's genuinely afraid.

He genuinely has terrible self-esteem.

He genuinely cries.

He genuinely panics.

He genuinely wants to survive.

And he still chooses to protect people.

That's what makes him courageous.

His story isn't about becoming fearless.

It's about realizing that fear doesn't determine his worth.

The boy who spends half the series screaming that he's useless eventually becomes someone capable of standing on his own, developing a technique nobody taught him, confronting the person who represented his deepest insecurity, and fighting while fully conscious.

And perhaps the most fitting thing about him is that even after all that growth...

he's still Zenitsu. 😭⚡

The official character material itself emphasizes that central contrast: his extreme lack of confidence and timidity versus the sharp, capable swordsman revealed when his fear pushes him into a trance.

Mount Sagiri (狭さ霧ぎり山やま) is a massive mountain located in a densely populated region. Near its summit, the air is extremely thin, making breathing difficult.

History The mountain is used by Sakonji Urokodaki to train children who aspire to become Demon Slayers. Sakonji tests his students by tasking them with cutting a boulder with a katana. If they succeed, they are sent to participate in the Final Eliminations. Children who complete the Final Eliminations are accepted as Demon Slayers. The souls of those who die during the Final Eliminations return to the mountain.

Mount Fujikasane (藤ふじ襲かさね山やま) is a mountain full of blooming wisteria, blooming year-round from its base to its slopes.

History The Final Selection The mountain is used by the Demon Slayer Corps for the final selection process, where those who wish to become official Demon Slayers can prove their mettle. Those who pass the test are recognized and awarded their own Demon Slayer Uniform, Nichirin Sword, and Kasugai Ravens.

To ensure the success and skill of Demon Slayer candidates, the mountain itself is used to house a large number of demons captured by previous Demon Slayers, testing their survival skills and combat abilities.

With the abundance of wisteria growing from its base to its slopes, the mountain has effectively become a gigantic prison for demons. Because the wisteria prevents them from leaving the mountains, the demons are forced to starve until the Final Selection.

During his career as an active Demon Slayer, the former Water Hashira, Sakonji Urokodaki, captured an initially weak demon and imprisoned it within the mountain to use it in the Final Selection. However, unknowingly, this demon evolved and gained power and strength within the mountain, preying on the Demon Slayer candidates. The demon specifically targeted Sakonji's students and devoured them, killing them in the most painful manner possible.

Asakusa (浅あさ草くさ) is a district of the Japanese capital, Tokyo, and the titular setting of the Asakusa saga.

Overview It's a large, densely populated urban center with tall buildings and bright lights that illuminate the city at night. Many people stroll through the crowded markets with dozens of business signs. Unlike the small town of Tanjiro, the city streets are traversed by carriages. There's also a tram system that runs throughout the city. The city lies on a bay adorned with a large fountain tower, next to a large reservoir.

Story Muzan Kibutsuji lived here in human form with his wife and daughter, and it serves as his base of operations. Lady Tamayo and Yushiro lived in a hidden house in the city until they were discovered by Muzan's servants, Susamaru and Yahaba.

The Butterfly Mansion (蝶ちょう屋や敷しき) is the mansion where the deceased Flower Hashira Kanae Kocho, Insect Hashira Shinobu Kocho, Tsuguko Kanao Tsuyuri, and assistants Aoi Kanzaki, Sumi Nakahara, Kiyo Terauchi, and Naho Takada reside. The mansion is often used as a base of operations for injured Demon Slayers.

History Most of the medical treatment at the mansion is performed by Shinobu Kocho, though there are also servants known as Kakushi who carry out errands and assist in caring for the injured. In addition, the mansion is also home to others who are not Demon Slayers but offer training programs to facilitate the recovery process and help injured Demon Slayers reach peak performance. For example, Aoi Kanzaki creates a training program to aid Tanjiro Kamado, Inosuke Hashibira, and Zenitsu Agatsuma in their recovery from the battles on Mount Natagumo.

After Nezuko Kamado became the first demon to conquer the sun, she was transferred to the Butterfly Mansion for protection, with Sakonji Urokodaki as her guardian. Additionally, Kiriya, Kuina, and Kanata Ubuyashiki were stationed at the mansion to prepare for and support the final battle against Muzan Kibutsuji, as well as to guard the troops when they were forced into Infinity Castle using the Kasugai Raven and Yushiro's Blood Demon Art. Former Hashira Tengen Uzui and Shinjuro Rengoku served as bodyguards, and Suma was also present at the mansion, though her role remains unknown.

The first Flower Breathing user planted a cherry tree in the Butterfly Mansion's garden and named it "Victory Tree." After the final battle with Muzan Kibutsuji, Kanao Tsuyuri visited the tree to announce his victory.

After Shinobu's death, Kanao and Aoi became co-owners of the Butterfly Mansion. Tanjiro, Zenitsu, and Inosuke visited once a month for checkups.

Swordsman Village (刀かたな鍛か冶じ里さと) is the titular location in the Swordsman Village storyline. It is a secret settlement nestled in a dense forest. This hidden village serves as a center for the creation and forging of weapons exclusively for Demon Slayers.

Overview The village is home to blacksmiths who forge weapons, including Nichirin swords, for members of the Demon Slayer Corps.

To protect the village from demon attacks, strict measures are taken to keep it hidden, and its exact location is kept secret. Demon Slayers who wish to visit the village must travel blindfolded, with their ears and noses plugged, carrying Kakushi on their backs to prevent information from leaking to the demons. After a certain period, travelers are passed from one Kakushi to another. Furthermore, the routes and Kakushi themselves change frequently. Even the Kakushi who transport travelers do not know the exact location of the village. Led by Kasugai Crows, each Kakushi is directed to the next in line, although even these Crows are constantly being replaced.

All villagers wear hyottoko masks to conceal their identities, a tactic intended to protect them from being spied on.

Layout The village bustles with foundries and workshops where Nichirin swords, the Demon Slayers' primary weapon, are skillfully forged and repaired. Adjacent to these workplaces are residences where skilled swordsmiths live. Additionally, the village houses a collection of mechanical training dolls, including the Zero-type Yoriichi, designed specifically to help Demon Slayers hone their combat skills.

Besides being crucial for maintaining the Demon Slayers' equipment, the village is also renowned for its rejuvenating hot spring, nestled on a picturesque hillside. The healing waters of this hot spring possess countless healing properties. A long soak in these restorative springs can work wonders, relieving ailments such as cuts, burns, hemorrhoids, constipation, gout, diabetes, hypertension, anemia, gallstones, muscle and joint pain. The hot springs are known to bring relief from even more mysterious ailments, such as a warped personality, rudeness, hay fever, itchy navels, and the pain of a broken heart.

When a Demon Slayer visits a village, it is customary to first pay homage to the village chief, Tecchin Tecchikawahara, before taking any other action. To find the chief's house, simply follow the street from the village entrance gate to the end, then turn left. The chief's residence will be in that direction.

History While it is unknown when Swordsman Village was founded, it is said to have existed for over 300 years.

Blood Demon Arts are specialized supernatural abilities possessed by higher-level demons.

Overview Each time a demon devours a human, it grows stronger and can eventually become powerful enough to develop unique supernatural abilities known as Blood Demon Arts. Blood Demon Arts vary from demon to demon, with each power seemingly based on a central theme (e.g., martial arts, dream, sea). Most, if not all, Blood Demon Arts are based on the demon's past, personality, ideals, interests, and/or profession. Furthermore, Blood Demon Arts may not have a single use, but instead grant multiple abilities within a single concept or theme. As the name suggests, all supernatural phenomena and effects use the blood of their wielders as a medium to manifest into reality. Essentially, Blood Demon Arts are blood magic.

The abilities and effects granted by Blood Demon Arts can vary widely. Some may be combat-oriented (e.g., creating dozens of blades) or more supplementary and practical (e.g., controlling a fortress, creating illusions). Others are simpler and more recognizable (e.g., manipulating electricity and ice), and still others are more complex and unconventional (e.g., creating invisible arrows that control a person's movement vector, controlling their biology), making demon abilities incredibly versatile and powerful.

Some Blood Demon Arts can be used freely by the demon emitting them from its body, while others require the use of some type of equipment, naturally derived from the demon's body, to be used in conjunction with them. However, there is one known case where a demon had a tool stolen and was subsequently attacked by its own Blood Demon Arts. In the case of Tamayo and Nezuko, they had to physically bleed out to activate the Blood Demon Art, which could be achieved through injury or self-harm.

Genya Shinazugawa is a unique and unusual case because, despite not being a true demon, he could acquire the Blood Demon Art by consuming body parts of exceptionally powerful demons.

As demonstrated by the former demon slayers Kokushibo and Kaigaku, Blood Demon Arts can be combined with Breathing Styles, enhancing already powerful sword techniques with supernatural abilities; the only known Breathing Styles known to have been combined with Blood Demon Art are Moon Breath and Thunder Breath.

It is assumed that Blood Demon Art can be shared, as seen in Rui, who could share his spider-themed Blood Demon Art with demons in his "family," granting them spider-based Blood Demon Art (and traits).

Blood Demon Art should not be confused with other supernatural abilities possessed by demons, including regeneration, body manipulation, extrasensory perception, and biological absorption.

Weaknesses A common weakness of Blood Demon Art is that it is vulnerable to both sunlight and Nichirin weapons, meaning it disintegrates or is dissipated when exposed to sunlight or when cut by a Nichirin Sword. This likely stems from the fact that each skill and technique is created from the flesh and blood of a demon.

Another weakness is related to demon blood, which prevents him from using Blood Demon Arts when his blood is depleted. This is clearly seen when Kokushibo is unable to unleash any crescent blades while the bloodthirsty Genya trees keep the Upper Rank at bay.

List of known Blood Demon Arts and users:

•Kokushibo is the demon with the most Blood Demon Art techniques – eleven, although it is implied that he knows at least sixteen. Akaza is next with ten, but considering only Blood Demon Arts unrelated to Breathing Styles, he possesses the most techniques. •Because Zohakuten can utilize the abilities of the four original Hanteng emotion clones, as well as his own unique ability to manipulate wood, he is the demon with the most unique Blood Demon Art – he has five.

Aside from Kokushibo and Kaigaku, who use forms of Breathing Style combined with Blood Demon Art, Tamayo and Akaza are the only demons to categorize their Blood Demon Art techniques under unique names, respectively Blood Spell (Wakuchi?) 惑わく血ち and Devastating Death (Hakai Satsu?) 破は壊かい殺さつ.

Kyogai and Karaku are the only demons whose Blood Demon Art has been used by others (Kiyoshi and Nezuko, respectively). However, in the latter's case, this is the only instance where the Blood Demon Art has been used against them.

Spider Demon Daughter is the only demon whose Blood Demon Art technique has been revealed in the manga but not in the anime. Moreover, her technique was the only one not officially translated, making it a Japanese manga exclusive until the release of the Second Databook.

•Yushiro, Susamaru, and Yahaba are the only demons to possess Blood Demon Art techniques exclusive to the game, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba - The Hinokami Chronicles.

Demons are a carnivorous, vampire-like species whose primary diet is humans. They are also nocturnal, as they are weak to sunlight, though they also remain awake during the day, as they do not require sleep. Demons have an abnormally strong physical constitution and powerful regenerative abilities, making them resistant to normal weapons and giving them the ability to easily heal from any wound, even regrowing their heads. Only Nichirin Swords, weapons crafted from a special ore with the property of absorbing sunlight, can inflict life-threatening wounds. However, even with a Nichirin Sword, the only guaranteed method of killing a demon is decapitation. Demons are also known to hate wisteria, which is poisonous to them and whose smell they repel.

Virtually all demons possess a murderous instinct to kill and devour humans and have lost most of their memories of human life. While they still retain their original personality, it most often becomes a darker version of what it once was, often corrupted by their core beliefs and past. However, there are a few demons who have completely retained their human emotions and memories, such as Nezuko Kamado, Tamayo, and Yushiro. Some members of the Kizuki Twelve also retain their human memories, such as Rui (though he eventually lost them later), Kaigaku, Kyogai, Doma, and Kokushibo. All demons regain their memories moments before death, likely meaning that demons also experience a flash of life before they turn to ash.

Demons are also known to mutate and become stronger over time as they devour more humans, allowing them to evolve into more monstrous forms and enhance their physical and regenerative abilities, among other attributes. When demons devour enough humans, they can develop the Demon Blood Arts, a range of supernatural powers and techniques unique to each demon. Different human blood types have different levels of nourishment for demons: the rarer the blood type, the more nutrients they receive. The rarest blood type is known as Marechi; eating one human with this blood type provides a demon with roughly the same amount of nutrients as eating a hundred ordinary humans.

The Demon Slayer Corps is the main enemy of the demon race. It is an organization trained to destroy them using numerous, refined techniques and tools developed over centuries to exterminate them. As a result, demons live in hiding, with most of society unaware of their existence. Furthermore, some demons blend into human society to hide from pursuers and gain easier access to prey, such as Daki and Muzan Kibutsuji himself.

Demons generally live solitary lives, not grouping together. Instead, demons are highly territorial and fight over both prey and potential hunting grounds, as Muzan forbids them from gathering in large groups. A notable exception is the Spider Family, a group of demons forced to cooperate by their leader, Rui, with Muzan's consent.

Demons are mostly linked to their progenitor, Muzan. All demons pledge allegiance to Muzan, who uses fear and manipulation to maintain loyalty. However, Muzan's control over his offspring is not omnipotent. A strong-willed individual may be able to sever the bond with Muzan, rendering him immune to his curse and virtually undetectable to him.

Demons are not born naturally; they are all originally humans who were transformed into demons later in life. The first demon, Muzan, underwent an inadvertent transformation when his doctor administered an experimental medicine containing the Blue Spider Lily as its main ingredient to cure a terminal illness. After becoming a demon, he discovered his enhanced physiology, and while he enjoyed the power it granted him, he also discovered his sensitivity to sunlight, which caused severe burns upon exposure. Throughout his thousand-year existence, Muzan sought to create more demons, fueled by the hope that one of them would undergo a mutation that would grant him the ability to withstand sunlight. This pursuit was not intended to increase the overall number of demons, but rather focused on finding a Chosen Demon whom he could absorb to grant himself the power to overcome his sensitivity to sunlight. As the progenitor of demons and the source from which almost all demons originate, Muzan is the only being in the world possessing blood with the unique power to transform humans into demons. His cells permeate all the demons he creates, forming the foundation of their existence. Consequently, when Muzan is eliminated, all the demons he spawned will cease to exist.

New demons are created through contact with Muzan's blood, which triggers the transformation process, provided the individuals are able to resist the resulting mutations. It should be noted that this is not a mystical process, but a biological one, occurring at the cellular level, suggesting that Muzan's blood and the blue spider lily medicine have mutagenic properties. There are three main methods of demonization: • Muzan Forced Injection: This method involves Muzan personally injecting a controlled amount of his blood into a human, either through attacks or by exploiting a wounded person. Contact of the victim's open wound with his blood initiates the transformation. Muzan's attacks can be quick and inconspicuous, as when he swiftly slashed a passerby's neck on a busy Asakusa street, unnoticed. Known examples of successful transformations using this method include Nezuko Kamado, the Asakusa Demon, Akaza, and Enmu.

• Muzan Recruitment: This method involves Muzan seeking out vulnerable people he deems worthy of becoming a demon and convincing them to willingly accept his invitation to become one, though in some cases he does not tell his victims he plans to transform them. He then shares his blood with them, triggering the transformation. Known examples of successful recruitment using this method include Tamayo, Kokushibo, Hantengu, and Rui.

Higher Rank Recruitment: This method involves the Higher Ranks of the Twelve Kizuki providing their blood to people they consider strong enough to become powerful demons. The blood itself does not possess the power to transform humans into demons. Instead, it serves as a signal to Muzan that they intend to transform the recruited individual. Once Muzan grants his consent, the blood transforms, becoming capable of transforming humans into demons. This invitation can only be given by the Higher Ranks. The recruited individual who receives the blood should be extremely grateful and is strictly forbidden from shedding even a single drop of blood. Unlike Muzan himself, the Higher Ranks must find individuals who willingly accept the invitation and cannot force the recipient to transform. Notable examples of successful recruitment using this method include Daki and Gyutaro, who were recruited by Doma after Gyutaro asked him to save the former, and Kaigaku, who was recruited by Kokushibo after he decided to betray the Demon Slayer Corps to save himself. Over the many centuries of his existence, Akaza attempted to recruit several Hashira he encountered in battle, including Kyojuro Rengoku and Giyu Tomioka, but all without exception rejected his offer.

Due to the changes in their bodies caused by Muzan's blood, possessing a larger amount of his blood results in increased power. However, most people are unable to withstand the extreme transformation caused by a large amount of his blood, leading to the destruction of their cells and the disintegration of their bodies into ash. Therefore, Muzan has difficulty finding individuals with the immunity to withstand the high enough concentration of his blood necessary to transform into a higher-level demon, though this can be mitigated by administering smaller doses of his blood over time.

Those who practice the Breathing Style exhibit greater resistance to the transformative effects of Muzan's blood. As a result, it takes significantly more Muzan's blood and a longer period of time for Breathing Style users to transform into demons. For example, Kokushibo's transformation process required a lengthy period of three full days. This stands in sharp contrast to the relatively rapid transformations observed in other demons, such as the Asakusa Demon, who occurred in mere seconds, or Nezuko, whose transformation took several hours. After this, Muzan lost interest in transforming swordsmen who use Breathing Style techniques. Furthermore, there are individuals who possess complete immunity to his blood, though they are exceptionally rare.

Besides Muzan, Tamayo can also create demons, though through scientific methods rather than blood sharing. However, this method is significantly less efficient, as it took her two hundred years to develop and was only used once, when she converted Yushiro to save him from a terminal illness. Before the final battle, Tamayo also managed to transform her cat, Chachamaru, into a demon.
